Saw a list for all Big 10 teams of 4 & 5 star recruits since 2018

Michigan was first with 18
Illinois 14
Mich St 12
Ohio St 11
Indiana 11

NU was 8th with 4 players

As for coaching Purdue was 7th with 5, Iowa 10th with 2, Rutgers 2, and Wisconsin was dead last with 1 player who was a 4/5 star recruit.

What it says to me is if you can find a coach who has a system, recruits kids who fit the system, and develops them then you can still be successful even in the Big 10.

I realize recruiting is imprecise- some kids are under-rated and some are over hyped, but there is a path to winning for NU, but it requires finding the right coach for one thing.

I think once you get outside top 30 kids or so, it’s all conjecture.
Either way there is obviously value in having a coach who can identify kids who are winners or have more growth potential or fit a particular system well. Wisconsin and Iowa seem to do it to great success. Something can definitely be said for finding kids on the upswing versus those who were given high early rankings and stagnate

Illinois has won the most Big 10 conference games the last 3 years combined, and that’s coming off a pretty serious down period for them under Weber/Groce so talent is a great starting point

One football coach talking about the transfer portal...

"My transfer portal is right there in that locker room because if I'm constantly going out every year and adding guys from the transfer portal, I'm telling all those guys in that locker room that I don't believe in them, that I don't think they can play. We're also not doing our job as coaches and recruiters if we're bringing in a bunch of transfers." - DaboSwinney

I really thought this accounts for the success Loyola had under Porter Moser(he had a system to the letter and had recruited kids to fit it) and it also is what I believe is wrong with NU...NU has recruited some good players, good enough to win...but the pieces dont fit the puzzle...wront type players for the system or no system that can accomodate the type of players we have.....UW was and is a great example....they have been running that offense for a while and they getter done with lesser players. My thought is that for whatever reason Coach Collins is not able to grab the recruits he needs to fully run his system and is playing cards with out a full hand

And WIS keeps them for six years

Or he does not have a system that works as well with our level of talent?

If Dabo said that, it means he’s the biggest believer in the transfer portal on the planet.

Sorry Dabo, but in this age if you aren’t using the portal to try and improve your club then you’re an idiot

I think he wants to run a system that won‘t work with the level of recruits he can consistently get at NU.
