The importance of The Egg Bowl - the facts
________________________________________
It's no secret, Mississippi State has taken the Egg Bowl to another level, while we have sat on our hands and done nothing.
The hatred Mississippi State has for Ole Miss cannot be matched. I don't want to hear about Alabama, Auburn, and Paul Finebaum show. I'm talking about the State of Mississippi.
Missississipi State has made it no secret the importance of the Egg Bowl, and how much they hate us, and want to own this rivlary. Examples : Gold Shoes, Gold #'s, Hail State, #hailstate, coundown clock, TSUN, "This is OUR STATE" commercials, and billboards, etc. The trash talking from their AD, and HC.
Ole Miss : crickets chirpping. When asked who our biggest rival is, some Ole Miss fans reply "LSU".
Mississippi State fans : line up in the damn rain, to taunt our football team and their families, barking at them, ringing their cowbells in their faces, screaming obscenities, beating on the bus, before and after the game.
Ole Miss fans - sit in The Grove till 2nd qtr. starts with their bowties, and searsucker pants on, in the comfort of their tents with chandeliers. They are late to the stadium to "lock the vaught" because they are having just one more cocktail in their red solo cup.
Mississippi State fans - are reaching out to the cap and tshirt crowd, promote wearing maroon tshirts to games that say "Maroon, the only color that matters" , and to the average joe in the State of MS, that never sat foot on a college campus after high school - they are accepted, considered one of them. They call themselves "the peoples" University much like, ( here goes my WWE reference for the day ) Dewayne "The Rock" Johnson calls himself "The People's champion.
Ole Miss fans : Ole Miss has an AD known as "the beancounter", that publicly down plays the importance of "the cap and tshirt crowd." Meanwhile Ole Miss fans have radio personalities ( Richard Cross cough, cough ) who come across as a stuck up, snobby, I'm better than you, personality, over the air waves Monday - Friday, who publicly has said, "He thinks there is something wrong with a grown man, wearing a Ole Miss Jersey to a football game." WTF!?!? Richard, you saying LSU fans shouldn't wear a jersey to games ? Instead wear a Red Polo ? What are you saying?
Here are the facts :
- The last 30 years The Egg Bowl record is 17-13 in Ole Miss' favor
-The last 20 years The Egg Bowl record is 11-9 in Mississippi State's favor ( winning the last 3 in a row )
-Jackie Sherrill's last game as HC Ole Miss beat him in Starkville 31-0
-Sylvester Croom's last game as HC Ole Miss beat him in Oxford 45-0
-Houston Nutt's last game as HC Mississippi State beat him in Starkville 31-3
Guys, and Girls, if I don't have your attention now, you don't have a freaking pulse. This is serious. Just like Chuck said in his coaching search article today, Houston Nutt, and his staff just didn't get it. Whoever the next coach is, MUST GET IT. There is no exception. Billy Brewer got it. Tommy Tubberville got it. David Cutcliffe like him or not, finally got it. This Egg Bowl game means EVERYTHING. This rivalry means EVERYTHING. It is time to take the gloves off, and get after it.
The new AD must set the standard, and the new HC must be aggresive, proactive, and creative. The coaches at Ole Miss must understand that you DO NOT lose to Mississippi State if you want to keep your job. This downplaying the rivalry, and "flagship" crap isn't cutting it. Ole Miss football is at an all time low, we are down, and Mississippi State knows it, and are smartly kicking us while we are down.
Well, ITS TIME TO GET UP AND FIGHT BACK. Here's to a new day, and a new era of Ole Miss Football. We cannot begin to heal, until we decide to get off the mat, and fight back, and BEAT Mississippi State. Not just football, in everything.
It all comes back to pride. Pride can be a bad thing, but in this case its a good thing, and we need it, and a lot of it. I want the next HC to walk the Walk of Champions with his chest stuck out, wearing red pants, just like Billy Brewer used to do. He embraced it, he loved it. That's what we need at Ole Miss right now.

Man, I hope, hope, that is not the case. It is not looking good at the moment thought. Ole Miss fans need some hope. We need some GOOD NEWS for crying out loud. If this "committee" screws this up, and indeed our only choices are Freeze or Hudspeth, it just shows you have far we have fallen, and the reaction will not be a good one.

Absolutely true.

I also find it funny when there is no talk of LSU being our "real" rival in years when we suck.
LSU is a rival, but our #1 rival is Mississippi State. Period. It's not even close.
Some should drop the better-than-you attitude and acknowledge that and quit with all the "LSU is our real rival" crap.
For the record, State has their share of fans that do the same thing with Alabama in years where they are good. It's ignorant. Ole Miss and State are each other's biggest rivals. Always have been and always will be. It doesn't matter how good either team is at the time. The importance of winning the Egg Bowl cannot be overstated.

**You do realize that MSU's upper decks were empty and everyone sat in the first deck so some would be shielded from the rain and others wanted to get closer to the field since there were so many empty seats.
As to the fans jumping up and down. That was shown on TV right before the game started when everyone's stadium is peaking during their introduction.
When I went down there two years ago the atmosphere was dead until the second half of the game when it became apparent that MSU was going to win the game. Then they got rowdy and started sticking out their chest.
They have brought less than 5,000 fans the past few games in Oxford so lets quit acting like they are supporting the event in numbers or support more than Ole Miss.
**I do agree with the rest of your points about the school and coaches promoting the event more but the bottom line is that the Ole Miss fans are showing up just as much as the MSU fans, if not more.
The bottom line is that OM probably could not have beat Lafayette High in Oxford right now. It just fell apart and the ice broke after Nutt was dismissed and the suspensions of Mackey and Scott.
That is why OM lost, not because of how important MSU has made that game.

Semper, where in my post did I say that, or mention that is what we should do? My answer would be HELL NO, but we have to change the way OM fans, and coaches are treating this rivalry. It is critical, to think otherwise is simply foolish. By that, I do not mean barking in anyone's face, but to think we are better than them is simply the wrong attitude.

Great post Matt and I too agree about moving the LSU game. We should have a patsey for the 11th game or the week after LSU. I come at the State game from a somewhat differant angle. Born in the 60's I didnt experience much of the Vaught years so State was THE GAME for my generation. Going to school in Clinton MS (6th-12th ) we had about a 40-40 split with about 15% USM fans mixed in so it was a constant battle. I learned to HATE MISS STATE football and still do. Just cant help it. I taught my first child ( born in 90's ) to hate STate. She would let us know she had to take a Jackie Sherill as a toddler.

I agree w/ your post and it's insane when people claim LSU as the biggest rival. They are absolutely on another level from us. I was in BR for the Ark game last Fri, and the Tiger fans could careless about us. We are a bottom feeding easy win in their eyes. Nutt failed miserably in many areas and it was obvious he was clueless about playing an in-state rival. Add to that, we now have so many students/alums from out of state who do not deal w/ the cow college inbreds daily, like so many of us do. They don't understand the intensity and necessity for winning that game. Some folks will never learn. But it sure would be nice if the coaching staff understood.

Great post MattReb i agree with EVERYTHING you said and yancy i have to disagree. I am a sophomore student at Ole Miss and love the Rebs through thick and thin. Something must be done to change the student body's attitude (especially the out-of-staters) about rebel pride. If i ask a couple of my friends if they want to go to the basketball game, most of their responses would be "Are you crazy? It's a Thursday night, I'm going to the square early." Some but not all don't give a rats *** about our little Mississippi rivalry or who we hire as our coach. Hell, most don't know who Brandon Bolden, Andy Kennedy, or Mike Bianco is.

Great post! We need a coach that is the "right fit" for OM whatever that means. I prey that who ever is hired that the fans will get behind him and not start dragging him through the mud from the get go.

Dan Jones is even more of a problem than Nutt.

He needs to resign. Otherwise, regardless of the new football coach, Ole Miss will be a bottom-dweller.
It should be glaringly apparent.
