Thoughts? Although not a great unit, OLine has decent number in this category.
Probably depends on the offense you're running.
People need to understand that our OL isn't that great in PART (not entirely) because of the positions we put them in and that they're not ideal for the running game. Our tackles are taller than NBA power forwards and can't get any leverage in the run game. Our guards and center actually are not that bad.
But the combination of poor tackle play and an ineffective passing game makes rushing the ball difficult.
To have a great rushing game or a great passing game, you have to be at least good at the one you're nor great at. When TO had his best teams, he knew that even though he didn't have a sophisticated, passing game, it was enough that if the defense tried too many in the box, they would get burned. 1983 is a classic example where we had probably the best running game of all time, but it became the greatest because we had Irving Fryar, who no one could cover and could burn them deep at any moment along with a highly accurate QB. It was different in 1995 where we probably had a better running game in of itself, but it wasn't as good overall because we didn't have the passing threat (it was still pretty damn good though).
I love the option and still think that TO's offense circa 1995 would work, but there's no doubt that the 1971 OU wishbone would be a disaster against a modern defense.
Our biggest problem now in the running game though is that we have no passing game at all. When we hit a completion, it's just pure luck most of the time.
