Or maybe didn't know he was ranked that high. He commented before others were talking about his ranking.
I was merely asking a question. Not a statement. Hence when I said “unless I’m missing something “ because i did not see him ranked on flo

Was more referencing your comment "Room guy w/ line up potential later?" A recruit with potential to be in the lineup isn't a room pl

I wasn't throwing shade your way (not my style). That's kind of what I said that you may not have known he was ranked that high because that was posted after you asked the question.

Plus he's from a farming family, therefore "Country Strong". Watch out to those he ratches onto.

Thinking he was at 138 at Super 32 due to the lax weigh in rules and he's more of a 144 for this season. Guessing that since he wrestled 138 in HS last season. Am I wrong? Tell me I'm wrong.
Fair. We have him in our 1A rankings so you are right that is probably where he goes this season.
How can he be ranked #38 in his class when Flo doesn't even have him ranked in top 20 at any weight? Unless I'm missing something.
#38 in his class refers to Class of 2027, and I always use Willie/MatScouts.

Not sure about others but to me “class” equates to grade when referring to a ranking. “Weight” is used when referring to a weight class ranking. Apologies if that created confusion.

Someone asked above if he's a room guy, that's what that comment was directed to. I said I liked the kid a lot, I'd been propping him on another site as a kid I think can be a solid starter for a good program with some lower AA potential.
Not trying to call out any specific person.

I propose eliminating the phrase, “room guy,” until the wrestler graduates and it turns out he was indeed a room guy.

It’s belittling, especially for a guy who puts everything he has into the sport, joins his favorite team (Iowa), and I hope expects to compete for a spot and make the team.

Let’s remember Mikey Caliendo was ranked #52 in Flo’s class of 2021. Not a room guy.

Not sure why you responded to my thread. Again, I never said anything about the kid being a room guy, I've been nothing but optimistic about Dawson, I think he's a really good get.

As far as Caliendo, I can't believe he was ranked that low in HS. He beat Levi Haines, Dean Hamiti, and bullied Aedon Sinclair (to be fair he had a couple of years on Sinclair).

Hawk- I was trying to avoid negativity. You replied about the issue most recently, so I replied to your post. Your posts were all great, so I figured it was a safe place to reply, without any implication that your posts were an issue. I apologize, my mistake.

First, no. We aren’t eliminating the phrase.

Start from the understanding it isn’t a negative term and go from there. It’s a phrase of endearment and respect, not a knock.

Room guys are those who don’t have the resume of a high level D1 wrestler but they take on the challenge anyway, show up every day, and grind. They are great practice partners and dedicated to making themselves and the team better despite rarely being recognized or earning much glory. Sometimes they end up wrestling with the varsity due to injuries or other issues. They give it their all when they do. And every once in a while, they earn a starting role over more decorated guys, and on rare moments they end up on the podium. That’s peak room guy, and always a hell of a good story.

Room guys are among THE most respected guys in the program. It is not a negative phrase in any way. No need to make it one.

I actually agree with this; I think the problem has been the term is overused ie sometimes a solid backup is described as a room guy.

I’d say that depends. Both can be true. Was he an Iowa state placewinner who built himself into a solid backup? He would still be a room guy. Maybe?

I know I should probably let this issue die but by my definition Jayce Rhodes = solid backup; Koye Grebel = room guy.

I agree, but some of the older, unrealistic Hawks, see it like this: Jesse Whitmer, Mike Zadick = solid backup; Jesse Ybarra, Joe Cruz = room guys. We are in different times and the old, crazies will do anything to not accept that. Accept it.

Rhodes is 100% a room guy. Didn’t win a state title in high school. Heck, didn’t even win conference his senior year. Comes to Iowa anyway and brings it on practice every day.
