Haters gonna complain about Peterson getting pinnedby Vega, but Peterson was wrestling a good match and got caught being aggressive. Happens to the best of them.
No disrespect bc yes his effort was good but if anyone ESPECIALLY OUR COACHES has watched Vega all year, you know he's looking for the cradle off a single to his right side. Many saw that coming all match. KP was fortunate it didn't happen sooner but that outcome was inevitable when he kept shooting to that side and couldn't finish.
They could wrestle 20 times and Vega is winning 20 and pinning him at least 10. It just is what it is.

157 is really weird to me.

Voinovich gets to wrestle all the scrubs for some reason and Williams has to wrestle all the hammers. Long story short I have no idea how good Williams actually is.
He's 9-7 in the matches he's got to wrestle. That gives me a great idea how good he is.

Coming really late to the party and watched the dual on youtube. Some bright spots like MC and PK but mostly ugh. I know drake is having a down year but wow he was not even in the building tonight. Gabe is Gabe. Again wasted talent. He should be pulverizing people but just won't shoot. I don't remember the last time I've seen 3 Iowa wrestlers pinned in a single dual and the HWT kid was the best Tom could march out there? wow. I don't think much was learned tonight. MC getting his confidence back that he can hang with and is better than most of the guys ranked above him. At the end of the day, this was a pig...no amount of lipstick is going to make this match look any better. I was watching Terry jumping up and down like his pants were on fire in some of the matches, what is he trying to do moving around like that?

He wasn’t laughing at Plott, he was showing that to douche bag Taylor. A ton of bad blood between Ferrari family and okyst.

It's Oklahoma State not Okyst.

Angelo may be a good wrestler, but the bad blood simply falls on the way the entire Ferrari family acts. OSU bent over backwards for AJ while he was there. You can't always fix the knuckleheads.

I don't care how you cut it, dissect, document this meet or the two programs. There is a distinct, unambiguous difference in the two programs, how they actually wrestle, scramble, approach the sport. Iowa is not even in the same sphere as OSU on any modern form of wrestling. Like watching a Model T being overtaken by a Tesla. Unreal. And spare me the "out of service" wrestlers. Just night and day between competition and styles.

Yup forgot RT. The day just gets better and better
Riding time isn't added on if the tech is achieved before the end of regulation.
I’m not saying Caliendo didn’t deserve that stale call….but where the hell was it for the first two periods when Lockett wouldn’t engage or shoot?
I despise the way Lockett wrestles. I don't recall ever seeing a wrestler escape near the center of the mat like he did in the first and third periods and then immediately, and not under pressure, back straight up to the OOB line. In the first period he escaped near the center of the mat and took ten steps straight back to the OOB line without any pressure from Caliendo. He then stood there with both feet outside the OOB line. For the next forty seconds he stood or kneeled on all fours at the edge with no real attempt to move toward the center. In the third period, the same scenario occurred. Lockett escaped near the center of the mat and took eight steps directly back to the OOB line with no real pressure from Caliendo. He then stood there or knelt on all fours for the next 20 seconds. From 1:53 to 1:30 in the third period was just appalling "wrestling" by Lockett.

DT gets at least 2 championships in the next 4 years
I've been beating that drum since DT got there, but some on here thinks it's insane. DT is recruiting and improving his wrestlers. They will be competing against PSU 2 years from this March.

It's likely Ayala is in the consis after Friday morning at Nattys.

Then, does HEW kick in?

It'll be a sad ending to a pretty decent career.
BTW: I don't think we should rag on the three guys that got stuck on Sunday...they should be wrestling at Wartburg.

Lockett is a much more talented version of Jordan Williams.

Who thinks we will be better next year?

125 Deluca ?? Major injury-- missed the whole year on the mat-- "maybe better
133- who knows, this year's version of Drake is not good, but tough to replace--I say worse
141- Kale P or Nasir ? Probably better next year, but not good enough to be sure-fire AA
149- Block Likely better
157 - Williams, probably better if he can find some offense, EStrada?
165 - ?? No idea, no one on current roster--Portal? Likely way worse
174-- Arnold- I think he has a chance to do well at this weight-- let's say equal
184 - Ferrari- Lets give him the benefit of the doubt and say better
197- Ludington Better has to get stronger AA contender? "maybe"
HWT- I can't say better-- will he ever be healthy? Let's say equal

Will this team gain ground on PSU-- no way. Will this team contend for a trophy? very doubtful.

Our athletes get hurt-- a LOT! Some of it is probably bad luck, but Maybe its the way we train? We need dynamic athletes that SCORE, can ride, can get out from the bottom, and can PIN. We also dont have much depth.

Will the above team sell out Carver--I doubt it.

Does the future look bright? I dont see it. Yes, we have some decent recruits coming, will it be too late ?

They figurin to kick our asses just like Jax did. We're f*cked three ways to Wednesday until someone makes a quality change. I'm telling you...let's bring the VA Tech coach and his recruits to Iowa and let's rock and roll!
i dont know **** about the Vtech coaches but they are putting together a nice team

I still cannot believe a very talented lightweight who has been in the room with TnT for 5 years got worked like that. I honestly don't think there's much of a true talent gap between 23 year old Drake and current Jax. I saw one guy wrestling like he was in a life or death battle (like TnT wrestled) and one wrestling like he was just going through the motions.
That kid showed the gap IN EFFORT between him and one of our best guys and it makes me sick.
You dont think there is a talent gap between drake and jax? Lol

I said not much and I'm talking physical ability. I don't believe there is a significant gap there. It's he stronger? Faster? More athletic? I've watched a lot of Jax and his flexibility is elite as are his instincts. But the biggest gaps I saw last night were mainly between the ears and behind the rib cage.

Good examples. Why are these teams getting solid kids that may ride the pine, while Iowa can't even get solid backups? Sitting on the bench for few years in a quality room gives you a better chance at a title than being a 4 year starter in a program that gives you nothing more than a chance to start. That's telling when guys would think that gives them a better opportunity.
They aren’t buying into our program. Full stop.

There is so much about Oky st with their cowgirl looking warm ups, cowboy hats and pistols in air thing, to their mascot and Locketts glitter shoes that just seems so gay and creepy. Even Taylor looks like a creep.
That’s kinda a weird take, imo. But it’s what I’ve come to expect from some fans around here who would rather not think about why we’re getting our asses kicked all over the mat. Cael is a krailure and OKy St looks creepy. Why can’t we recruit or develop athletes the way the creeps and failures can?

It looked like Drake was totally unprepared for Jax's scrambling ability. Twice, Drake had Jax dead to rights on takedowns. Once, in the first period, Drake hit a beautiful slide by, but Jax wriggled out and the opportunity was missed. Another time, I think it was in the second period, Drake almost had both of Jax's ankles but he scrambled out and then cradled Drake for a seven-point move. Between the two missed takedowns and their immediate aftermath, that's a total swing of 13 points, right there.

If they wrestled again, I'd expect the match to be closer but still think Jax has too much for Drake. He's just a much better scrambler and chain wrestler.

I think Jax is the best wrestler in that whole bunch of studs. I think he is better than Spencer was at that age. He has a motor like ADS with a much higher skill level and mat presence. It sucks what he did to Drake who I have really liked thru the years.
Before you crown him, he got taken down 3 times by Va Tech's freshman and won 9 to 8 in a match that could have gone either way.

Your comment about dynamic athletes sums up the entire issue. We almost never have guys who is can do those things and for sure against quality competition. Plus we don't scramble well, you can try and coach guys all you want to avoid scrambles but they will still end up there. Our technique catalog is the equivalent of an introduction to wrestling kindergarten book. Our finish rate is awful. Our ability to defend once someone is in on a shot is bad compared to the competition.

Forrest looked huge and Drake has a big frame for 133. I could see him growing into 149/157. Their top 10 pfp lightweight in 27, who already in mid 120’s, will be odd man out with Ramirez, unless they can cut to be career 125, then battle for who gets the spot. Forrest, Vega, big Raney, current 157 may have trouble separating in a few years
Smith would have made him cut to 118. Even with today’s first weight class being 125.

One will man 149.

Hard to imagine the other beats out Forrest or Vega. Unless Forrest cuts to 125.
Forrest is not going down to 125. I’m sure his plan is to compete at 65kg in 2028. You have to remember these elite wrestlers aren’t at Iowa. The main goal isn’t winning NCAA titles. That’s just to pass the time. These kids have much loftier goals

There’s a new hierarchy in college wrestling. Penn State is of course at the top. Ohio State and Oklahoma State are in that second tier below them. At this point is Iowa even a top 10 roster next year?? We are barely a top 10 roster now and we lose three of our four top wrestlers, with no replacements.

TNT coach like they're still trying to prove scrambling is a "flash in the pan" and good ol' fundamentals win matches. What they fail to realize is scrambling is just as fundamental as a good sprawl or down block.

Scramblers aren't just making it up as they go. They are executing elaborate systems of techniques. The very little scrambling Iowa does do is mostly to hang on for stalemates (clinging to ankles, basic leg passes, etc...). Very rarely do you see Iowa wrestlers scramble to score.

I've used this analogy before, but it's like Jared Goff vs. Patrick Mahomes. When Goff can stay on his spot in the pocket, in structure, he can execute with great efficiency. As soon as you force him to move a bit out of structure, he's no longer a threat. Mahomes can execute in structure, but is just as dangerous if you move him off his spot too. That's the difference between Iowa wrestling vs. PSU/OSU.
