The first year they finished 9th. The 6th place finish was 2015, the punt year. Other than those 2 years 12 firsts and a 2nd. Yeah, we are officially spoiled.

I don't think Spencer's personality would be a good fit for a head coach. Spencer has spent his entire college and international career under TnT. His mindset toward wrestling and coaching has been firmly molded by them. If Iowa wants to break free from the TnT coaching philosophy I don't think Spencer is the answer. Also, Spencer's approach to wrestling has been hyper-focused, intense and individualistic. I just don't think Spencer's wrestling approach and personality traits match well with what Iowa needs in a new HC.
There is a strong possibility you are spot on with your assessment. However, I wasn't saying what I believe they should do. I was expressing what I believe is the plan.
What i think they should do is take a look around. Metcalf, Dake, Nolf, Popolizio, Cenzo would all bring some offensive and training diversity to the Iowa room. Maybe Spencer is the guy, if so then diversify his staff. Over pay someone like Nolf, give Kerk a call or bring back Cassioppi. Spencer with a strong staff. Put Larry Lee on staff as the general manager to do the interviews and buffer Spencer if needed.

Nelson strikes me more of a parlay kind of guy, usually tied to an end of match dance routine.
A better consideration is that since Cael arrived at Penn State, Iowa and Penn State have won all but 1 of the last 15 NCAA titles.
