I spent a very pleasant night and the Staybridge Hotel in West Des Moines, Iowa as the midway stop on my drive from Billings to home. I was less than five minutes from the hotel when I was pulled over by the West Des Moines PD because my Penn State license plate frame partially covered the state name on my Penn State vanity plate. I was assured that the Penn State license plate frame and vanity license plate had nothing to do with why I was pulled over. I was graciously issued only a warning.

I have driven close to two million miles and in all fifty states. Only in Hawaii and Alaska did I not have a license plate fame on my car, although the rentals may have. This was an absurd waste of police time and my time.

It's a shame that this interaction's result will mean that I will not be returning to a hotel that was going to be my Iowa stop on future jaunts. It had a great room and breakfast. But I will not be removing a license plate frame that has given no other police officer a problem because one over zealous cop might issue me a ******** ticket.

On one hand the frame gives police an opportunity to pull you over and check you out. Additionally, some frames actually cover up part of the plate (state name, or registration tag). Since a lot of states bill you for tolls via camera, they don't like any part of the plate covered.

On a side note, I got pulled over recently for no light on my plate. It had burned out.

I implore you to keep the PSU frame and unalter your future travel plans. The hotel didn't hire Barney "Hawkeye" Fife.

If it only caused one problem in all these years and after all those miles, I wouldn't allow the actions of a frustrated inbred corn child (who has no business being in law enforcement) to alter my travel plans. Go back to the hotel if it is nice and proceed to travel as you please.

75 PA Cons Stat § 1332 (b)(2) and (b.1) (2025) are relevant in Pennsylvania. not in iowa. I know someone was pulled over and fined in New York for a similar "violation".

Some laws are meant to be broken. I am willing to pay whatever fine is necessary if I ever get ticketed for not having a front license plate. I will never drill holes in the front bumper of any of my vehicles in order to mount a front license plate holder.

That's not happening.

The relevant numbers were plainly visible. The bottom half of Pennsylvania was obstructed.

Having a plate frame is actually a Misdemeanor in the state of Florida I believe. A person I know was pulled over given a warning. At any rate, I wouldn't be driving around with a plate frame after cocktails in Florida, if you don't want to talk to a Cop.
