Dak Prescott is tearing up the pre-season for the Cowboys and leads the NFL Preseason in passing yards, completion percentage, TD's and passer rating at 137.8 after 50 attempts. With Romo down for the count can he step in and prove to be the QB leader that the Cowboys have needed for quite sometime?

I think Prescott can and will play well. I don't think Romo will ever play again for the Cowboys but who knows what he do to stay in the starting lineup. Last I heard, he might try to wear a brace and play week one.

I do think if Dak gets a start he will stay in that role.

I saw where Dak said he got his starting roles at every level this way unfortunately. High school, college and now pro the guy in front of him was injured and he got the nod...and never looked back in every situation. I think Dak will be the Cowboys QB for the rest of the season if he indeed starts week 1. Guy seems to be that good.

Preseasons a different animal than regular season, but Daks certainly made the most of it.

Couldn't ask for a better situation as an NFL QB either. Ridiculous O line, massive targets.

I've watch two of their games and Dak looks like a 5 year veteran. Very poised, picks out the right receiver delivers the ball accurately and on time. It's unbelievable that he lasted until the 4th round. Apparently there was some crap about his throwing motion being defected or something.

I'm not a Cowboy fan, and of course I'm not an MSU fan either but I'm really rooting for this guy. His got a great story, and from everything I have heard he is a great kid.

He has special potential.

Everything Tebow, Kapernick, and Manziel have/had, DP has in spades.

He's a bull and warrior like Tebow, but a better thrower. He's an athlete like Kap, but has more poise and better leadership ability. He has the special intangible wow factor like Manziel minus all the immaturity and baggage.

Dan Mullen knows how to find them, develop them to have great success in college, and get them a shot in the pros. Alex Smith, Tim Tebow, Dak Prescott...even the kid he coached at Bowling Green had a pretty outstanding season with Mullen as the QB coach and got drafted late.

Yep. Dak will be good and like many have said, romo will never play for the Cowboys ever again.

If the kid is as good as many think, the Cowboys could actually be for real for once in our life time. We all know what Romo is made of. If Romo comes back and takes the starting QB job back, the Cowboys will go back to being the same ol Cowboys of the past. During the preseason this dude looked really good and has a chance at becoming the man for the Cowboys his rookie season in the NFL. I am actually hoping he plays well enough to keep Romo on the bench. It seems Cowboy fans and coaches will never learn the fact as long as Romo is your starting QB, don't expect much winning come playoff time.

I said last year that Dak made Miss, 14 points better at least in every game. They're going to miss him. Romo well Romo needs to start looking for a landing spot IMO.

The preseason really means nothing when it comes to evaluation of players and teams. Most teams sit their star players and run pretty vanilla on both sides of the ball. For Prescott, the things you want to look at are 1) accuracy; 2) is he going through his progressions; 3) is he making quick decisions, and are they correct; and 4) how nervous does he get with the ball under pressure. Don't duck and run every time if the pressure is on.Step up in the pocket and make the play.

These things will mean a lot more in terms of evaluation, than hitting that streaking future grocery clerk for a touchdown. The preseason is chocked full of bad football players who have little idea how to play the game at that level.

I hate over rated, over televised Dallas but I always pull for the SEC guys. Hope he dominates.

He probably is....but will still struggle in real actual NFL games where starters are playing most of the snaps & the defensive coaches actually try to scheme instead of sticking with vanilla no rush sets. because every rookie QB in the NFL struggles, Peyton threw a busload of INT's his first year, Aikmen looked like a junior high kid out there at first.

Not sure why folks then Dak can't handle the job when the real bullets are flying. 20 years ago it was highly unusual to see a rookie QB start for a team, but times have changed. Many rookie QBs come in and handle the job well from the get-go. Rothlesberger, Luck, Cam Newton, Russell Wilson, & RGIII all started as rookies and had good seasons.

The difference is essentially that Rothlesberger, Luck, Newton and RGIII were all high first round picks. Most were the #1 overall pick taken in the draft. The expectations for them to do well were very high. Also, let's point out that those guys are the exceptions. There were also a ton of other high draft picks who failed miserably. It isn't fair in any way to think that Prescott is going to step in and play like Luck or Rothlesberger did their rookie seasons.

Prescott was taken at the bottom of the 4th round. QB's taken in the 4th round and later are more likely to never play a down in the NFL than they are to actually start a game. The only 4th round QB that I know of who had a lot of success was Rich Gannon, but that didn't come until late in his career. There really isn't anyone else to point to as an example. We shall see what happens, but statistically I'm going to guess that he has a much better chance at being elected Governor of Texas than he does of being a successful 4th round QB. Especially one who is expected to start their first NFL game.

I wish him well. He seems like a good guy and he was exciting to watch at Miss. St. But if I was a Cowboy fan I would keep my expectations pretty low.

Statistically Dak is blowing away the "first rounders" in this draft and has the highest QB rating of any QB in the preseason. Despite the vanilla defense argument that's still pretty damn impressive IMO.

BTW as far as late round draft pick QBs not having success, let's not forget that fellow named Brady - he was a 6th rounder. I realize he was an exception, but the analysts get talent projections wrong all the time and it looks to me like they did with Prescott.

Here's a rhetorical question. If the draft were done all over today what round do you think Prescott would go in?

Blowing away first round picks in their first pre-season is nothing spectacular. Again, he may have a lot of success but it is highly unlikely. I can't name one QB drafted in the 4th round or later who started their first NFL game and then went on to a successful career. That's not to say it won't happen, but it is highly unlikely. It is possible for a QB to be drafted (or even undrafted) late and have success. But no one who is in that situation has done it without some time to grow and understand the game. Throwing him in this early might actually damage his growth, but we shall see. Fortunately for Prescott the Cowboys have a good line, the potential for a good running game and a couple of quality receivers. Hopefully this will help.

I don't expect any rookie to step in the NFL and be great right away, it can happen I guess. What helps Prescott is the Cowboys have a top-notch O-Line and are deep at RB with Elliott, Morris and McFadden. If Dez returns to normal and Zak can get a groove going with Witten, he'll be fine.

Dallas' defense...........that's the other side of the story.

His DUI impacted his draft status as did being misjudged as a Tebow type player. Really underestimated his growth as a passer and how he carried good, but not great, teams at MSU.
Probably deserved a 2nd round selection, given some of the stiffs that went ahead of him (yes, I'm talking about you Hackenberg).
Those two factors hurt him but he's been really impressive in vanilla action, shown great poise and decision making. He's going to hit some rough spots but like his future.

The Seattle game was not vanilla. They were bringing pressure w twists/stunts. Pretty intense game for pre season. (V unusual)

Dak doesn't have to win games on his own. The OL, Elliot/Morris/Dunbar, and Dez/Witten/etc provide a ton more help than most rookies could dream of.

Dallas concern (like UK) is DL. Esp until Lawrence gets off 4 game suspension.
