I was thinking about him going to the O-Line but the way he gets pushed around I don't know.

At this stage I think a redshirt would be best and he will need to decide what direction that he wants to go and work very hard to get there if He wants a career in football. I hope he succeeds either way

KY only school to let him play D Line. Every other school was going to make him an O-lineman.

He should have listened

Would have been nice if UK could have redshirted Elam.
I can remember several years ago the debate on this and other UK fan boards as to whether Elam should RS his freshman year or not. Some people actually made the argument "Well, he's not going to be here for more than three years anyway, so you might as well let him play" (meaning he would leave for the NFL after his junior season).

Sadly at this point, he won't even get an invitation to be training camp fodder after his senior year unless he really steps up his conditioning, technique, etc.

Exciting win for the Cats last night. Is there any horse hair left in this discussion? Some of you could wear the *** off a brass monkey.

The best thing that could happen for Elam is a position change to the interior of the Oline. Make the change now, start teaching him how to use his hands and feet. Use him for depth at DT when you have to. Then redshirt next year while learning to play the new position. This way he still has a chance to contribute his rs senior year. Maybe just maybe the kid still has a future playing football but it for sure won't happen on the defensive side of the ball.

Thank goodness he didnt redshirt because now he can take one and move to a new position. if he had redshirted before his freshman year it would have been a complete waste. There is not some magic fairy dust that would have made him a star after a few months of redshirting.

If Elam wants any chance to play for money, he'll convert to another position this offseason.

I played LB in high school, but due to our lack of depth on the line coach made me be the backup right guard. And the knucklehead I backed up would always get cramps in the 4th quarter causing me to have to play both ways.

Anyway, in one critical game we were down a score in the 4th quarter and sure enough, I have to go in and play guard. The guy opposite me was the 1996 version of Jason Elam - 6'7 300 - recruited by major colleges because of his size, but was absolutely slow and worthless.

I had zero problem blocking this guy and I was giving up 120 lbs. The only thing that sucked is occasionally he'd fall on top of me as I'd get low and take his legs out. We drove down and scored to win the game. It was actually the only time I enjoyed playing line.

This is how I feel about Elam. Coach fell in love with his size, but damn, there is so much more to the D-line than that.
