Okay I'm probably just getting soft in my old age, but is it really necessary to clock some of these opening round teams?

JCA vs Bradley I would have been subbing a lot earlier, and got more play time for 2nd string and Sophs.

St Francis vs Grays Lake I didn't watch any of this but I assume it was similar. Come on!

Think coaches just want to get that clock running so that way if the 2's/sophs give up a Score or 2, you don't have to worry about putting the 1s back in and having an injury happen. For most teams the drop off from 1s to 2s is very dramatic and if the other team has their 1s in still they can score quickly and make things interesting

Sometimes the difference is too much. 44-3 isn't that bad. 61-6 is pretty gross, but again, I have no knowledge of the substitution patterns though. Maybe coach was being a Richard.

Reents at Wilmo always gets the 2nd and 3rd team reps in blowouts, but the starters usually get the entire first half.

I think most coaches who are blowing a team out at halftime let their starters punch one more in 3Q and then start getting the 2s n 3s reps.
Yeah, this is pretty much what coach Jaws does with JCA, but being the playoffs and not having a lot of depth at QB and RB, I would at least pull those 2-3 skill guys right after half, instead of letting them punch in one more. It would really hurt JCA's chances of progressing in the playoffs if they lost one of those guys.

St. Francis pulled the starters early in the 2nd quarter when it was 34-0….Grayslake North kept going for it on 4th down in their own territory which is where the score started to get out of hand a bit more (kudos to them - fought to win all game long).

Lets hope we don't have this participation playoffs again...
I think it’s great but I think everyone should get a shot. If it’s the records that bug you then let all CPS teams have a shot. I think it was 15 or so would have displaced all but 6 teams with 2 wins. Under the old system started in 1985 you had teams with 6,7,8 or even 9 win teams get their asses handed to them. Even before 85 when it really was hard to get in teams with great records got destroyed so

Football is not an inclusive participation sport... The reward for the playoffs is working your *** off, winning enough games and youre rewarded the playoffs. Baseball and basketball lets everyone play in the postseason... THAT is enough!~

We should have a 3rd place game…. More trophies
I know your kidding but I never turn down the chance to vent how much I hate the third place trophy. I've never spoke to an athlete that had to play for the 3rd or let's not forget the 4th place trophy that actually said they were happy to play in that game. They may give a quote to the media that they were happy to play one more game but they were just being polite.

As a former wrestler I don't even like how 6 people get to take the podium. I don't like the 3rd or 4th place match or how some get to wrestle back after losing their first match....I guess it's to accommodate the familes of the wrestler who drove all the way down there and had to watch him get pinned in 30 seconds? Guy who finished 6th doesn't even get to stand on the podium he has to stand off to the side for the picture 😂

I don’t think that it is fair to put the responsibility on the good team to manage the outcome of a bad team. There are a lot of things you can do to slow the game down and minimize the outcome. Things like take the 40 sec clock down to under 3 before EVERY snap. Run the ball the entire game and never attempt a pass. Heck even the refs can help out by starting the play clock late. If it’s 28-0 in the first quarter you know it can and will get ugly.

Right now, it seem like the responsibility is with the good team only and that’s not fair to them.
There are so many things that can go wrong for the team trying not to embarrass the opposing team.

Imagine in baseball you have a fantastic year. Get to the semifinals then lose in extras by a run. Then you gotta come back & play the other team who got beat then lose to them say in extras by a run. You made it to state a fantastic joy but it ends with 2 losses so that sours your year. I’ve seen it too in hoops where a good team has a bad game & loses in the final 4 badly then gets punked out in the 3rd place game. A crappy way to end the year

Amen brotha 👊 It's what made our sport special. I miss the days when teams chased 6 wins and the 5-4s had to sweat pairings day to see if they had enough points to get in. Go back to 6 classes 32 teams per class. Classes 4, 5, 6 seeded 1-32. One can dream, right

I know Coaches give the cookie cutter answer of "It gave us one more chance to play together" and that might be a fact but let's be honest, what's left of your broken heart was not in it.

Talk about brutal, last year MC lost in the baseball semifinals after upsetting #1 Laurence and favored BR on BRs field to make it to the final 4.....Friday they lost to Libertyville. Heartbreaking but Libertyville was the returning State Champion and pitched their ace so it was what it was. They went back to play in the 3rd place game Saturday and because of weather they wanted to assure they got the State game in first, so they had to sit around and watch that happen and the teams celebrate.....then it rained so they had to sit around more....they finally got the consolation game in at like 8:30pm. My friend who's son was on the team said it was just torture.

You rarely get a good game because of this. There is usually one team that really wants that 3rd place trophy and the other is just done.

So you lose in the semi's and you would just quit on a 3rd place game? Im not reading not wanting a trophy?!!! So you want a final 4 with just two trophies and the two that lost get nothing to play for? We are from different worlds son!~

Saying we are from different worlds is truly a compliment I will take when being compared to you! Thank you.

"I" didn't state my personal feelings. I stated what is observed during the 3rd place games in other sports.

I have to disagree... You play for hardware... Be it a conference championship with a nice patch for your letterman's jacket or a state championship. Its all about the hardware and bringing home a 3rd place trophy is better than saying we made it to state! What do you get if you make state and fail reach the finals? That 3rd/4th place trophy will be a proud part of any trophy case that you can show your children and grandchildren. It makes it worth killing yourself during practice, in the weightroom, or on the track... To have something tangible to show what "we" or "I" accomplished.

Naw... Walking away with hardware is always a good thing...

On the topic of hardware... Illinois has they worst state championship trophy I have ever seen. Those football and basketball trophies they used to have were awesome... Now it's sterile and plain!~

I'm not a fan of them. The older ones were more traditional with that sports figure mounted on them, these new ones are very dull and kinda blah. The trophies get put in the case, I like the banners hanging in tue gym and the rings the team gets

Trophies that cost half as much. The IHSA is all about the $$$ just like everything else. Look at how much extra they raked in this weekend from "opening participation round".

How much cheaper are the new trophies? How much more did they get from opening round games?

I also liked the old design but they were due for a big rebrand. I have seen so many schools displaying trophies from the 70s , 80s, and 90s with whole or partial characters missing from the top or the majority of letters missing from “state champions” or “runner up.” So at the very least I do like integrating the letters into the trophy instead of mounting them on just to have them fall off years later .

Perhaps the 3rd Place game made more sense when the non-football sports had only A & AA, not the expanded 1A-4A that it does now.
For those that want a "real champion" in football, consider that from the start of the State Playoffs in 1974 through 1979, the were just 5 Classes and just 16 teams per Class while more schools were playing football then versus now.
All conference champions and fewer than 1/2 a dozen 1 loss teams (awarded At-Large entry) made up the field.
Every regular season game meant something and the T-Shirts celebrating making the playoffs were celebrating a true accomplishment.
Winning your conference meant everything because without that crown you were likely watching in November.
Then came 6 Classes (1980), then an extra round added (1985), then expanded to 8 Classes (2001) and now all kids in the pool, whether or not they can swim.
