Fitz has to play the long game. He can't appear like a hothead who fires a coach for a few bad games.

He'll do it at the end of the season, hopefully. In the mean time he'll tell the media "we're working on it" and tell O'Neil "fix this or else."

Turk, can you have your top people monitor JON’s mansion to see if moving trucks show up?

O'neil has a bye to get something going. Firing him now is pointless as the D will still be rudderless. I doubt the assistants are ready to take on the role of DC or Fitz might have promoted one of them.

JON has always been a pitiful coach but the 'Top people" dont want to get involved since JON is a hothead who even roughed up an opposing player while on the raider sideline.
If he could channel his boxing energies into some sorta cerebral ying yang then maybe he could learn from the error of his ways.

If the top people can’t do it, then can you get @Mr Wickerpark on it?

Thats a good idea. I heard a rumor that he will be posting again. Maybe he can track him and give reports. I really like Mr Wickerpark.
That would be a good idea!!! We need some amusement in here after all that has gone on!!!

I don't get this view, entirely. When is someone ready for this role? How many years has McPherson been coaching under Hank? When will he be ready? After two more years of... what? What more is needed? I guess a shining example of how NOT to do the job.

Anyone would be an improvement. Dead last in P5 rush D other than Mizzou.

Especially when you consider the circumstances under which Fitz himself ascended to his position. He was allowed to grow into the position.

I find it hard to believe that Hankwitz wasn't mentoring a protege on the staff. Why bring in somebody else with such a wildly divergent ("read and react"?) system? Why not stick with what has worked?

Or, at minimum, eschew the use of anything that didn't work (i.e. his NFL career)

Edit: that was a bit of a cheap shot, but I'll leave it out there.

Because that’s the system that Fitz wants. Do we really think JON is running a system against Fitz’s orders? This debacle is on Fitz

Wasn't he late to the D? I thought he had been RB coach and then moved to D to take over DBs when Jerry Brown retired. That is likely the issue. Best suited to be a HC but he had only had two or three years on D side of ball when Hank retired. Went over to DBs in 2018. Probably best suited to be a coordinator but not enough time on D to be DC. But after this...

Taking on under the circumstances would be tough. Given the offseason is one thing. My guess, they will keep JON in the position to take the heat while behind the scenes are made that take much of the responsibility away from him

The coach we should have hired -

Had been on our staff recently..

Under Fitz. Under Hank.

Was a solid recruiter I think (not sure, I think I read that about him).

Had been a DC earlier in his career.

Left NU to once again be a DC.

How could he NOT know how to be a DC and what Hank was doing?

We should have thrown the bank at him and things would be better now unless there is something we don't know about him publicly (could be but doubt it).

Interesting suggestion, Euro. I thought Randy Bates did great with our linebackers. He really should have been considered for DC back when the decision was being made, especially given his recent experience as DC at Pitt.

I wonder to what extent Hank provided recommendations or suggestions regarding his replacement. Did he recommend Randy Bates or someone else? Was he asked his opinion on JON?

Hank was here for so long and knew that his retirement was coming, I think he would have given some serious thought as to who should replace him. I guess these are things we shall never know.
