Classification (1A-4A in NC) isn’t always comparable to the way other states do theirs. Neither is wrong or right... but I have to smile when I hear that “Alabama has 7A!”

7A doesn’t mean that their school is way bigger than our schools here in NC.

Hoover High in Alabama is just under 3,000 kids. It is the largest in their state.
That’s just a big 4A school here, granted, it would be one of our biggest schools too.

Page High - 1942 students
Highland Springs - 1846 students

Sorry, this has nothing to do with anything concerning this game. I just like numbers.

Page is down this year, yes, but there is still a lot of talent on the team. We are very young in a lot of spots and have also lost 4 starters due to transfers out of the program. The Achilles Heel, IMHO, is the coaching. Ever since Coach Kevin Gillespie left 3 years ago for higher pay, things haven't quite been the same. Page won the 4AA state title game in 2011 and made it to back to back 4AA state title games in 2016 and 2017, but have regressed since then.

TURN UP MAAAAAN

That’s EXACTLY what HSHS was hoping to face. The Springers are flat out loaded and deep at every position. We’re hoping for a hard fought, tough game. They are built on speed & discipline!! They remind me of Florida teams(the coach is from Florida).

You are exactly right! IMG recruits players from all over the country. Highland Springs has only players that live in their school district ,or attend the advanced education specialty center. Only kids from their county with advanced level grades are allowed to attend the specialty center. In Virginia, public school kids are only allowed 4 years of athletics, and can’t be over 18.

If they are good enough, they are actually allowed to play HS when they are in the 8th grade in VA. That would give them technically 5 years of ball.

This is not the year to expect a lot out of Page if you are that good. You need to schedule MCreek, Vance, or maybe MP to really test NC football if you want to go head to head with the best. There is no way of knowing if schedules are made to far ahead though.

I do respect Page, but great program on a down year will not serve for a great game.

That’s only allowed in VA PRIVATE schools. 8th graders are allowed to play JV,but only if they will be too old to play Varsity their senior year. No 5 year players in Virginia! Only 4 years allowed in PUBLIC schools!

While I respect your opinion, I teach and coach in VA. And Bassett High have 2 middle school kids playing football on the JV. and they have a couple of girls running cross country. And I know of one girl playing Volleyball as I watch her play today on the JV team. I was surprised as you, because I just found this out this year being my first year in VA. Now I would hate to think you can do this in the Martinville area and not anywhere else in VA, but it is the CommonWealth State, so they make their own rules.

If their middle school does not offer the sport,in particular,it’s allowed, but ONLY TO PLAY JV. You’re only allowed 8 semesters of VARSITY SPORTS in Virginia. The area near Richmond,VA called Chesterfield does not allow middle school football,so the 8th graders are allowed to play JV,but NOT VARSITY. In Northern VA,they allow Juniors to play JV. I think that’s ridiculous!!

The middle school that feeds Highland Springs has 3 8th graders that are 6’2-265,13yrs old, ready to play JV or Varsity,RIGHT NOW,but it’s offered there,so they have to stay down there.

In some areas of the US, Texas most predominately, the top football schools have a freshman team (sometimes two), a JV for sophomore and juniors that do not play varsity, and the varsity comprised of any of the four grades that are good enough to be placed there.

I am 100% supportive of a junior being allowed to play JV. On a loaded team, especially one that is senior heavy, the playing time for the junior will allow him to become much more experienced. Saw a player play mostly JV as an 11th grader start a few years in college. Player that had never really played organized football was placed on JV as an 11th grader. He was All ACC and played in the NFL. Special circumstances and it should not be used in all cases.

Growing up and playing in the Chicago Catholic league every school had a freshman. JV and varsity team. Some had Freshman A and B squads and all had feeder schools with 7th-8th grade teams. Some of the 7th and 8th grade teams were as good as any in the country and fueled the Big 10 and Notre Dame rosters in the late 70's and 80's. Especially Oline and Dline. Notre Dame 1977 title team must have had 20 kids who either played in Chicago Catholic league or in the Ohio Catholic league.

How good is Page’s JV?! I’m asking for next year’s meeting. Highland Springs’ JV hasn’t lost in 5 years, and no one has even been close the last 2 years. The JV only gave up 12 points in 9 games last year, with 8 shutouts, including back to back wins of 174 points in 2 games(94-0 and 80-0).

Page has 12 talented sophomores and 2 freshman on the varsity squad this year, so the JV team isnt as good this year as it has been in years past.

Page had a string of 8 years from 2009-2017, where they only lost 5 total games on JVs.

Young player development has been top notch for a long time at Page, I can only hope that it continues into the future.

I hope Page can bounce back. They had some good and classic battles with some Meck County teams.

Well, you could be right on the fact its only JV. But it doesn't have anything to do with the middle school offering the sport. All the schools have football and volleyball. If the kid is good enough, the high school takes them. FCMS anad Laurel Park both have football. Only 2 middle schools in Henry County.

I do know DJ Johnson that played with Kansas City, played in the 7th grade as high school player. Look like he played as a 3rd grader? Check Kentucky RULES!!! http://kentuckysportsradio.com/football-2/where-are-they-now-dennis-johnson/

I’ve caught a lot of flack on the Virginia Preps message boards over the years for saying that NC high school football is a whole different animal from Virginia. I grew up in Danville, right on the state line, so I’m familiar with the Page’s, Mallard Creek’s, the Vance’s, the Scotland’s and the Richmond Raider’s of the world. Virginia just doesn’t have the programs that NC has. I currently live in Richmond, VA and I’ve seen Highland Springs play A LOT over the past 5 years in which they won the state championship in 4 of those years. There is a big talent disparity between them and the teams that they’ve played.. In NC I feel that the teams are more evenly talented distributed across the state. For example, there’s only 2 or 3 teams that can beat Highland Springs this year in Virginia. Varina (a school 5 miles down the road from Highland Springs) , Indian River (who lost to 2A Northeastern already this season, team that Vance’s new head coach came from), and Maury (Springs put up 70 on them last November). THESE ARE BIG IFs. However, in NC you have teams like Reidsville, Northeastern, Mallard Creek, Scotland, Richmond, Vance, Shelby, Dudley, Catholic, Havlock, AC Reynolds, etc who are year in and year out have very talented teams (programs) but they have a very tough road to the state championship game. That’s just not the case in Virginia. Grant you, NC has more schools in general than VA but there’s no gimme’s in NC like there is in Virginia. This year I expect Springs not to be challenged until late into November and possibly even then they won’t see a challenge in 5A. I’m not saying this to drag the Springs program down, but to show the disparity in competition in Virginia and NC high school football. I personally think that Highland Springs could play with this years Vance, Myers Park, Richmond and Creek teams.. But there’s nothing close to those kind of teams in Virginia. Not even close!!!!

Lastly, I don’t know about Highland Springs having 20+ kids with D1 offers on their team. I know of about 8 but not 20. I think you’ll be hard pressed to find a program with that high of a number unless you look at a program like IMG Academy or one of those Texas teams with 90+ players. Even the dominant Durham Hillside, Butler, Dudley, and Creek teams didn’t have that kind of number of D1 offers and if you follow NC football you know just how good some of those teams have been in the past 10 years. I’m not talking smack cause I could be wrong but you have to show me 20 kids on a public high school roster with only 45 players on the team, with D1 offers for it to hold validity with me. Just seems far fetched.

Very very impressive! I’m an educator myself so D1, D2, D3, military or JuCo... That’s a lot to be proud of! Wasn’t coming for the kids, I knew HS had 20 players with offers, but D1 offers, that’s a really high number for a public school team.

Not even a comparison brother. Heritage is down. Only a few teams in Virginia could compete with Vance. Highland Springs is 1 of very few who could. 95% of the state of Virginia would probably lose to Reidsville. Indian River is a top 10 5A team and they lost to Northeastern week 1.

It's been said on here before and I generally agree. On the east coast the further south you go the better the teams. South Carolina generally better than NC, Georgia better than SC and Florida better than GA. NC/VA is probably traditionally the closest to even or maybe VA better. But I dont follow VA as close as I once did. NC has likely overtaken VA now. NC has improved alot and Charlotte is absolutely loaded and overflowing with talent. Charlotte kind of reminds me of Atlanta and Miami now days in terms of talent and teams.
