Honestly, I’m kind of looking at it the other way. It technically might be, but everyone uses that step back just like he did and it’s never called a travel.

James Harden made that move a weapon in the NBA. But they get the gather step in the NBA.

Technically I believe it would be a travel in high school and college, but some refs will let it go.

My 12 year old will at times take 2 baby steps forward after catching a ball on the perimeter and then shoot. It's quick, so sometimes the refs call it, sometimes they don't. I think that'll be the same thing with your son and the move in your video...

In these videos, in the first two examples the dribbler is getting both hands on the ball while his first foot to land is still in the air (left foot)= no travel

The last example (with shirt off) the left foot looks to be on ground already when both hands hit ball. He then picks up both left foot and right foot and goes back left, then shoots = travel.

I believe Jeans that your son is doing the last example. Again though, some refs will let it go and some will call it...

I looked at it full screen this time. To my eyes, the faster he goes the less likely it looks like traveling. The first few it looked like 50/50. The very last one on the driveway clip looked clean to me.

It is traveling. Picks the ball up, establishes a pivot foot and then moves the pivot foot by quite a difference.

That said others will say it isn't traveling, it hasn't been called in the NBA much and now at all levels people are hopping around all over the place without it being called. So like anything else in basketball, if you get away with it then it's not a violation. This all comes from the "modern NBA" and it's huge trend toward favoring the offense and specifically perimeter play. That pendulum is starting to shift back though as NBA is getting tougher on officials.

It's annoying to me that a grab the ball and step back/hop back/take 3-4 steps back doesn't get called when in other situations a player slides his pivot foot by an inch and that traveling is called.

How is it different than a two foot jump stop or hop step after the last dribble?

He dribbles then uses a step to gather then takes a side step.

Same as if I take a dribble take a step at the sametime to gather then jump stop or hop step to take 2 more steps
