The kid is going to take a year off, regardless. I get it, you do not want to compete for pt. Let Frank, Tatum, Grayson, and Bolden shine. Those 4 along with Amile and Matt....Gone, it's your team the following year with Luke and Chase! Family can be foolish at times.

He didn't like his role. His camp thought it best for him to find a new one. Moving on.

You're not going to find too many 5 star college basketball players that will redshirt to benefit their team. Most are looking at their best options. That being said, it's selfish to ask a kid(who has already reclassified for you) to redshirt again, it ain't happening

5-stars don't redshirt - it may not be unprecedented, but I can't think of anyone off the top of my head that has done so. They do transfer on a semi-regular basis, though, between the likes of Derryck Thornton, Marcus Lee, Malik Newman, Austin Nichols, Kyle Wiltjer, Rodney Purvis, Jabari Brown, Dorian Finney-Smith and others. I think asking a five-star recruit to redshirt is kind of a slap in the face. Kind of like saying, "Yeah, you'll be a nice player in a couple years, but you won't be a main cog in the immediate future." If they're not a main cog, they will go to a place that serves a bigger role for them.

He had every opportunity last year to make it his team. He decided he would rather do it his way instead. That won't work at Duke. I see no reason why he would have changed at all going forward. Red shirt or not.

I can never tell if jam really believes the stupid stuff he posts or if he's just trolling us.

I get the sitting out a year as a RS is no different than sitting out as a transfer. Could be an ego thing, could be finding a better fit thing, or could be just not liking where you are. I don't think Jam's point is stupid. That said, almost no 5 star guys would consider it even if it was a smart move. Consider Chase. He appears to really fit in at Duke and be happy with everything except potentially playing time. If it turns out that Bolden beats him out hands down and Giles and Amile come back strong and stay healthy all year he probably wouldn't get significant playing time even if he improves. As young as he is, redshirting this year wouldn't be a "bad" idea. Then, even if Duke lands Bamba and Carter, he still would be set for legitimate minutes for 17-18 and would have 2 more years after that to work towards making the NBA. It wouldn't be stupid for him to do that. It actually might be in his best interest. But, I agree that it would be extremely unlikely.

No trolling. And no stupid stuff. Some coaches, AAU and High School are suggesting these kids sit a year if they attend a high profile school, especially if there is competition at their position. This is really no different then a kid getting an offer, but attends a prep school for that 5th year.

That's a great look. Play a year. See who comes in and then when there is competition pull out the old RS card and use it to avoid competition. Genius. I'm sure the NBA will love that forward thinking.

The NBA cares less. NBA is about potential, however, GS is making a strong argument for skill, teamwork and those who spend some time in college .

I honestly believe that the best thing for him would have been to stay at Duke and compete for the starting job. At worst, he would have shared minutes with Frank Jackson for a year and then been running the team the following season. He had the potential to be in a similar position to Quin Cook, who won a NC by sticking it out and developing into a leadership role while sharing time with Tyus Jones. Attitude counts at Duke; not just ability.
Unfortunately, Tank had a different plan for DT which suited his own agenda.

I'll take Bolden over DT especially with FJ coming in. Duke will be fine getting their offense going with whomever is running point. What's missing is a good rim protector and low post scoring and Bolden certainly can help in both those areas. I wish DT the best, but I believe that Duke is better with the current lineup than one with him running point and no Bolden.

Had Derryck's family and Derryck bought in to what the greatest coach in the college era was preparing him for, he would have been a lottery pick this coming season. Harry, Jayson, Grayson, Luke, Frank and Marques would have made him look like a star.

I think that is a stretch, but i wouldn't have been shocked to see him get drafted in the first round. his whole development was set up for him to succeed THIS SEASON. Really a shame.

I don't see how DT woulda been a lotto pick

Well now he has the opportunity to become NPOY and the first draft choice in the year he comes out. That would not have happened and Duke and Uncle knew that. OFC

He might have been a lottery pick down the road.

But after this year? Seems like a reach. He would have had to share minutes with Grayson Allen, Matt Jones, Luke Kennard and Frank Jackson. I don't see how he would have seen more than 15 or so mpg in 2017, maybe less.

Just not enough minutes to go around. Now,2018. If we imagine Thornton hanging around and Allen and Jackson bailing after 2017, then he gets the keys to the car in 2018 and shines.

That would have been his year.

But no one benefits from having someone around who doesn't want to be around. No one.

So how many minutes will he be getting this season. I guarantee if he was the best player to get the minutes Coach K would have given him his due Wish him the best and hope he becomes an All-American so some of you can say " I knew It." In the same breath it seems as though DT got more than his fair share of critics on this board during he past season. To be honest I'm tired of discussing him and with this last post I'm through and have got it out of my system. OFC

How likely is it that he would have been the best player? Once Allen decided to return for his junior year and Jackson blew up at the McDonald's All-America game, the handwriting was on the wall for Thornton. He was on the fence, his handlers didn't like the way he was being used and Thornton wasn't sure anything would get better in 2018.

Heck, he might not have even been the primary ball handler in the 2017-18 season. Jackson isn't projected to be a one-and-done, so Thornton would still be competing with him.

I've seen 5 mock drafts for 2017 and Frank Jackson is listed as a first-rounder in 3 of the 5 projections. I suppose we can call him a borderline OAD at this point. I don't think it would be too far-fetched to see five of our guys go in the 1st-round next season. Should be fun.

Jackson is like Jones in that of he ends up leaving, it will be because Duke had a really great year. I know almost all of us would gladly take that.

Anyone even know what's going on with Thornton's transfer? We're now more than 2 full months since the announcement, and about a month out from when he started taking visits. This definitely is not moving as quickly as normal transfers.

no clue- doesnt matter though does it? I mean he can take as long as he wants and it doesn't really make any difference what so ever.

Read a quote from Eric Bossi last week that he expected a decision soon, and it was down to USC and Kansas.

They have a decent stable of guards and very few bigs. Interesting choice for him. If it's exposure he wanted, this one is a head scratcher. Not many 6'2 guards with average athleticism make the NBA. I'm not sold that this is the best path for DT.

Good luck to him and let's close this chapter. I feel bad for the kid that he left, but life moves on.
