So what are humans going to do when robots are capable enough to do nearly every job and also capable enough to make and repair other robots?
there was an article in Barrons about 6 months ago that discussed the broader topic of automation in general which includes robots. The expert predictions are that in 20 years over one half of all jobs will be replaced by some sort of machine or software. There have been almost 6 million jobs lost to automation just during the Obama administration. Here are some jobs that have already been replaced or partially replaced:
bank tellers by ATMS
telephone receptionist - voice mail
appointment setting - outbound robo dialing
warehouse workers - automated material handling equipment
accounting, clerical and managerial tasks - enterprise software
grocery, retail cashiers - self serve checkout windows
vehicle assembly - 90% of the labor has been replaced by robots
Here is what's coming in the near future:
Driverless cars in less than 5 years - several manufactures have been testing them for years. Uber is already negotiating to replace their entire fleet
Janitorial services - robotic sweepers, floor polishers etc.
Lawn maintenance - robotic mowers
metal and plastic part fabrication - advanced fully automated CNC machines
textiles - robotics (sorry China)
constructions - automated fabrication and assembly of components
aerial mapping and surveillance - drones
military - robotic army and artillery, pilotless fighter and bomber aircraft
It's hard to name a field that hasn't seen a significant reduction in human labor over the last 20 years. while politicians rail about losing jobs overseas - and there has been some of that, the bigger losses have come from automation, and it's only begun.
