I've developed a soft spot for BYU over the past several days.

Diving into Coach Pope I've not only been digging into the play but checking out their podcasts and interviews with Mark and I appreciate their passion for basketball despite their obvious ceiling.

So, I would encourage Coach to set up a home and away for them as thanks for the opportunity and support they gave him and since they are in the Big 12 it isn't a bad game to put on the schedule.

Poor dears seem legitimately hurt he hasn't had time to say goodbye yet so I think reaching out in this fashion would be cool and respectful.

The BYU-Utah rivalry in football is always fierce. Fun game with cool uniforms usually.

My tourney bracket was a hot mess, like many but fwiw, I had been watching some BYU games and had them to win two games. I had also been impressed with Iowa St and I think that's who I had beating BYU. But yes, Pope had a solid team playing well going into the tourney. I didn't watch them get beat though. I need to go back and watch some of it and see what happened there. I think BYU was the better team but that team doesn't always win. Either way, I'm with ya, that I had developed a soft spot for BYU too, way before thinking Pope might become our next coach!

They've always had a solid football program and the basketball program has good tradition. They gave Gonzaga fits in the WCC. Big 12 was a smart move for them. Their fans are loyal. A home and home down the road would be good for all parties. Maybe it can be done in a few years.

They were in the WCC for 11 years. During that time, only two teams won conference titles, and BYU was not one of them. They never hung a single banner of any kind during that time. I guess losing a few games could be called fits, but they never did anything meaningful while in the WCC.

They gave Gonzaga competition. St Mary's is the only other legit competition Gonzaga had in the WCC. BYU did what was best for them by leaving and going to the Big 12.
I think the Zags would be better off bolting for the Big 12 as well but since they don't do football, I'm not sure the Big 12 would do basketball only with them.

Yes, I will root for them from now on. They are not Christians but I would rather have a Mormon neighbor than the crazy secular leftists dominating so much of culture these days!

Yeah, I don't care about the magic underwear or the religion at all beyond a Spock like "curious" but they love basketball and that is what I'm interested in.

Yes Mormons are often very kind. However, being nice is not what makes you right with God. Repentance and faith in the perfect life, sacrificial death, and resurrection of the God-man Christ Jesus is what saves.

Mormons believe God the Father was once not divine but a human who achieved divinity by living a righteous life. They believe that if they work hard enough they can become gods of their own planets too. So they work toward godhood and believe in salvation by works. They preach a different gospel and a different Christ.

To go with that, you think Pope had any unconscious thought he would not be coming back to BYU and improve upon the quick exit?
This stuff is fast moving and Pope must feel like he's still in a dream.

I have no idea but suspect he was as surprised as we were when he got the call. But yeah, it's probably a whirlwind right now.
