The Rafters is a giant circle-jerk of misery right now. I came over to check in on what’s going on (knew nothing about the Pitt kid, just saw we got a commitment), and somehow the negativity has increased from yesterday.

I hope you folks are far happier in real life than you are on here. Sadly, I know some of you aren’t.

Jasper Lowe and Lewis can do things offensively most of the roster couldn’t last year yes. The 4 spot is bad right now I will agree, but they are adding somebody
Sure, they can do some things Butler/Brea/Robinson couldn’t but there’s also things they can’t.

It comes down to this… is Lowe an upgrade over Butler? No. Is Johnson an upgrade over Robinson? It’s probably a push at best. Is Lewis an upgrade over Brea? Most likely no.

There lies the biggest issue. We weren’t good enough this year to even make the Elite 8 and it doesn’t seem like we will be improved any next year.

For people bashing on Lowe

Miles Kelly in Auburn was "garbage player" based on stats, before transfering to Auburn, he was just 36.9%+32.1%+73.3% in Georgia tech, and then he goes to right system and becomes a very good weapon. Remember that he almost had no miss in the game against us.

Lowe should thrive in the right system
Kelly also has 2 All Americans on his team and one of them is a NPOY contender. We won’t have anything close to that. Kelly gets a lot of open looks because of his teammates. Defenses will be keyed in on Lowe.

In my opinion it was always going to be very hard to replace Butler, who I think was one of the best point guards in the country. For Brea and Robinson you have to consider the totality of their game. If you have a push on offense, but upgrade the defense, you have still improved.

We have Jasper, Acaden, Lowe, all can drive to basket when system can not work... This provides another dimension to our game compared with last year. Kobe/Jax (and maybe Butler) can not provide us in this dimension.

As for shooting, we will still be good at shooting

I don't know if he wiffed, but I do know he gave it everything he had.
I'll say this, Lowe can create off the bounce and he plays with an edge. I'll take that.
Here's the other thing, injurirs killed us this year. If not for injuries, we could still be playing right now and I firmly believe this team is already better than the 25 team.
We have to maintain our top 10 offense, but improve our defense, rebounding and physicality. I think Pope will do that.
Whiffing and giving it his all and not getting the guy is the same, no?

Agreed injuries derailed the season. Agreed our depth wasn’t nearly good enough. Disagree we are better now. Our 4/5 situation is horrid, currently, compared to last. Our 3 isn’t better, might not be worse. At best a push. I just can’t be convinced we are better. Now, go get a DUDE that can get his own anyway you want it and a 4 that can shoot it. Sure, I’m feeling better. But you’re gonna try to sell me we are better than last yr with no real 4 and Garrsion/Moreno as the 5? Come on now. But can we get there? For sure.

To be fair, there are a handful of Cal only fans that keep the board negative and ******. When you see one, put him on ignore, then do it for the ones you see after. You’ll end up with a handful, then it will be better for you.

Sure, pay attention to some rando Loserville fan (that might or might not know one GD thing about hoops) to make yourself feel better. Can’t argue with that logic.
As opposed to a rando Kentucky fan?

Not to mention nobody on this board watched a full Pitt game this year.

If you're not interested in hearing from people who have, no problem. Move right along.

I would assume this has been posted somewhere here. But the Duke and Louisville coach who have played against the Pitt transfer had high praise.
Kelcey saying that Lowe was as quick and fast as anyone they will play was good to hear. Said it was hard to keep him from going left and finishing. And can score in a variety of ways. Plays hard all the time. Does not let a miss or bad play affect him. Very effective passer. Does have a lot to work with.

Used to take a lot for me to put people on ignore. Not anymore. Used to think I was talking to rational people and we could have a reasonable conversation. Gradually came to understand that many of these people are just sick.
"Oh they're not as sick as they let on" They are just too high strung

I’m excited to have him next year and even more excited that we will likely have him for two years.

Same with Williams, he could be here for three years potentially.

And several other guys we are looking at have multiple years of eligibility like Yates and Folgueiras.

This is how you build a program. This is how you build continuity.

His highlight video that someone just posted does not show a very athletic player. I hope I’m wrong but I don’t know he will be able to stay in front of quick guards.

When this dude plays in a final 4 and is known as the best defensive guard in the nation let me know. It’s not the same thing,

Sure I agree but the hysteria on this board I was referring to was about Butlers shooting percentages. Heck even some posters didn’t think he was even gonna start because of it. There was a lot of Butler doubters on here for sure.

I probably have a better grasp on basketball than about 98% of the folks on this board. Take that however you want. Just because some Loserville fan (who everyone on here would **** on to prove their own point just because) watched them play a couple times means nothing to me. It probably shouldn’t to you either, but it fits your agenda so you run with it. Cool.

I can see that. I was never a Butler doubter, I was super happy we grabbed him. He was a winner and proved that so much here.

Do you man, I’m not gonna make statements like that about pope no more, I’m fully on board with. But I just wish our fans would stop moaning about not getting players then when we get one acting like they aren’t good enough
Difference in getting A player and getting THE RIGHT player. Thats the issue. Don’t lose sight of that.

Interesting take. I don’t have any concerns about his quickness, but I do worry a little about his frame and ability to handle physicality.

And you don’t know who the right player is. You’re a dman fan trying to act like he knows better than the staff. Did you ever think maybe pope can adjust his offense to fit Lowe’s game better

I’d prefer not to adjust the offense to a guy with those numbers, but that’s just me. If we are doing that, tells me all I need to know about where we are.

I’m not sure if I know who the right player is or isn’t. But I know we didn’t have a dude this year. And currently, we don’t have one for next year either.

I’ll say this, if Pope can go out and land that dude…I can get on board with this. But currently Otega Oweh is our best player. You good with that?

Best they could do I guess, it's sad the new expectation is a sweet 16 and not final 4. Hopefully it works out.

Yes I’m good with a guy who got 16 PPG being our best player or one of them

The only joke is our portal recruiting.

Even trying to compare this kid and Butler is laughable. Butler was a DPOY and title game experience. This kid isn’t even a good defender and hasn’t played on even a decent college team.

Look at who we have coming back? We have no shooters. As of now this is a worse roster than the one that just got beat in the S16 and lost 10+ games.

Two potentially good, not great, freshmen who’ve never played a game in college and a guy who can’t be depended to hit an outside shot. We desperately needed a big time shooter or major offensive threat and yet again it looks like we get neither. Looking at our outside shooting alone, we’re in trouble. His teams have to hit 3’s to win and what we have isn’t remotely good enough for that. We are going to be left praying that two fringe 5 star freshmen have huge years for us just to finish in the top half of the SEC and that’s not a position you want to be in.
Lowe is a major scoring threat. Your point?

Christ. I just can’t. I guess I just have higher expectations. Here’s something to ponder. SOMEONE has to score on a ****** team. Doesn’t mean they’re any good.
You calling Kentucky a ****** team this year is all I need to know about your basketball knowledge. Jesus Christ we have some of the worst fans in the sport.

He's not going to average 17 ppg here. we need him to be around 11-12 ppg lessening that load he had to bare at Pitt and with it much better efficiency like his freshman season should be the result. Oweh will demand defensive attention and so will Moreno and Johnson and especially Folgueiras if we can get him. all that should allow Lowe and Lewis to thrive taking easier shots .

That’s on me. Thought you were referring to Lowe. Totally misunderstood what you said.

But Oweh can’t be our best player next year and us do real actual damage. I love his game, but he’s not the best player on a title team.
