Nobody is really talking about JJ and I know the competition last night wasn't up to par, but I have noticed a difference in him the last couple games.
He has been getting into the paint and creating instead of just chucking up quick 3's.
Last night, he drove with purpose and did a great job feeding guys for easy baskets.
With Lowe's shoulder issues, I think JJ becomes extremely important and if he can develop at a fast enough pace, he could he really good at the 1.

all I remember about him from last night was on a fast break with 3 of his guys not yet to half court and 2 guys in his face he pulled up for a ill-advised three and missed it badly

I have seen him do that more than once. I can't stand a one on none three pointer. It's a 50, 50 proposition at best and no teammates to rebound.

I do think he can be a high level contributor, once he develops a better feel for the college game.

I think the biggest problem for him is adjusting to playing real basketball instead of AAU junk.

Differences
1. Teams play actual defense
2. B/c of #1, teams needs to play actual offense not just 1on1

Despite his small frame, he clearly has some good skills/athleticism, so as he adjusts, he should become quite an asset off the bench.

He needs to focus on driving the paint and distributing the ball more. He did better last night but still a long way to go. I think he has the skills to run the point as well as be an outside threat but his shot selection from outside has been abysmal. I'm ok with him shooting from anywhere as long as it comes from within the system rather than rushing down the floor and chucking it from 25ft.

That's all you remember???
The kid is going to do some head scratching things, but that's part of the process. Eventually, he's not going to do things like that. It’s why coaching freshmen is hard.
But still, JJ showed he has a very good handle and shiftiness, he has been getting into the paint and creating. It’s a very positive sign and it shows that the coaching staff recognizes what they need him to work on.

I’m not sure what you’re watching. He’s only a freshman but he’s been really bad.
Yeah, you and I obviously watched a different game last night. He had 9 points, 3 rebounds and most importantly, he had 5 assists, which is why I created this thread.
Is 5 assists not good enough for you? Again, this was game #6 of his college career. It’s not like he's a senior that is set in his ways. Kid is improving, not even you can deny that, but you're going to try.

Those of you that are dumping on JJ right now are going to disappear in January/ February when Jasper is catching his stride. Kid has great potential and eventually the game will come into focus for him.
You guys are judging him by his play right now, but aren't noticing the trajectory he is on. Give him a chance.

He looks better lately and can do some things no one else on the team can. And he’s thin but athletic enough that he should improve on defense, especially if his recent improvement is indicative of his “coachability.” I’m a fan. Good chemistry with Moreno too.
Johnson does love him some Moreno, doesn't he? It feels like 90% of his assists are to Moreno. I think he needs to learn and use purposeful dribbling and direct drives into the lane to make a big improvement at the PG spot. He's used to "playing" with the ball strictly for the purpose of getting his perimeter shot off.

yeah, actually it is all I remember...I had it pulled up on the ESPN app on alta fiber on the tv...but was doing other stuff such as wrapping Christmas presents and not watching it intently since it was a game that should have never been on the schedule

Did you see the windmill jam Noah had? Pretty sweet.

Pope has said recently that he is strongly emphasizing that with the players. Good on JJ for making it happen.

If people are determined to see the negative they will find a way.

His ceiling is the 2nd highest on the team but he needs to rein things in and play defense. JJ is a gifted passer and if he can focus on getting into the lane he can give us what we lose from not having Lowe. He's not there yet but he doesn't have to be there yet as long as he continues to make progress.

He's not really wrong though. I kept wondering during the game how the Cats were playing; the athleticism difference was such that I really couldn't tell if we were playing good or not. IMO, if we're going to schedule a team that weak it should be throwing an in state school a bone.

Its just a repeat of last year when folks were saying Chandler should leave because he couldn't compete at a SEC or UK level. He was just going through growing pains like JJ is.

No, and I seriously doubt it happened....because it would have been the ONLY highlight shown from the game by every UK media outlet on their social media pages...

The only thing he's not wrong about, is the fact that he didn't even watch the game, with the exception of one play, ehere JJ did something he didn't like.
He was pretty damn wrong about the rest.
So now we're critisizing the team we played, because it wasn't an in state team? Man, you guys are something else. How do you know they didn't try?
