K thinks he's going to have a big year and said he's 6-9 235 (compared to his listing last year of 6-10 220). It would great to hear any news on him and what he's doing to work in his game in the off season

Been excited about this kid Jake ever since we got him. Know he's very agile and athletic, but knew last year he would have to be patient and wait his turn.

I don't expect him to start, but I expect he will get meaningful minutes this year. I think Javin could give Duke some sorely needed added defensive presence down low we lacked last year.Excited about next year too!

He showed moments of a very skilled player last year. I was surprised we didn't see more of him then. I think he could turn into a weapon

Don't sleep on his offense. He could shoot in high school, scored 22 ppg, not terrible. I've heard he can hit threes, just not a shot creator.

3-point shooting for Javin:
9 for 21 (43%) as a HS Senior
17 for 37 (46%) as a HS Senior

Obviously a small sample size, but yes, he's capable of hitting the occasional outside shot.

I always felt the main problem with Lance Thomas and Amile is that they lacked confidence in their jump shot. Hopefully Javin has or can develop that confidence which will make people guard him and let him drive to the basket. If so, he could be in the same mold as Lance and Amile and maybe even better because he is more athletic than either of them. Hopefully he has their heart.

For me what stands out are those intangibles he brings, a very athletic big who is a bundle of energy. If K does settle into using 2 bigs, I'd be curious to see how Javin & Vrank play together. Having them as the bigs brings very good D, and size off the bench. Their ability to score would be in question.

Overall, it's great to see options
6-11 250 Bolden
6-10 255 Carter
6-9 235 Javin
7-0 260 Vrank

Really excited to see Javin this year, he definitely fits the mold as an energy guy off the bench. I wouldn't take much into the fact though that he shot descent from 3 in High School with an extremely limited sample size. His bread and butter on the offensive end will be cutting to the rim and crashing the boards.
Didn't get to observe this much last year, but he does seem to fit the mold of a top notch defender though; long, athletic, etc.

The thing I love about him is that he seems like a true program guy. Even with barely playing last season, he continuously was one of the most energetic guys on the bench. He was one of the first guys to console Grayson after his meltdown against Elon. It also helps that he's a freak athlete who I think will become a hell of a player! Really happy we have him and I expect big things out of him moving forward.

Good post. You just can't help but love this kid, he is a bundle of energy and really enjoys being at Duke. I really hope that he can just let the game come to him, and that he gets off to a good start. All he needs is confidence, and I believe he will be a "fan" favorite before he is done playing at Duke. Would really like to seem him have a great year!
Go Duke!'

I could see Javin playing a Brice Johnson kind of game. I think he has the tools to be a nice face up 4. I hope that starts now.

Javin has more physical and athletic talent than Lance or Amile did. He also seems longer than either of those two at the same stage of their careers. If he can develop the intangibles and leadership that Thomas and Jefferson had remains to be seen. To this day, Lance Thomas is the best big man I have seen against pick and rolls on a collegiate level. He wedged screens out perfectly, in sharp contrast to Ryan Kelly, Jabari Parker, and some others who were God-awful at it.

If he ends up being able to hit threes, he truly becomes a player Duke has never really had before. His athleticism alone puts him in elite company. He honestly seems like the player K wanted in Alex Poythress.

I am still not sold on Bolden over Vrank. Bolden needs to prove he can be healthy and beat Vrank out in practice.
No disrespect to Vrank, I really like the kid, but I fully expect Bolden to play with quite a bit of fire. I think he will want to prove that last year was a fluke and an embarrassment. If he's the player I think he is, he will have a solid year and make the leap to the NBA in April next year.

Vrank has a very high basketball IQ & post skills but Bolden is light years ahead of him with athleticism and mobility. Bolden also has good basketball skills so I do believe he will be of more immediate value to the starting 5.

If Bolden & Carter are the two bigs, their offsetting skills strengths would do well together. Now if Vrank and Javin are together as the second set of bigs, I truly believe they would do well.

I don't see Vrank playing much next year. K will play a shooter like Tucker or White that can play the 3-4 with Carter moving to Center if Bolden gets foul trouble. It makes more sense than playing two big men together with Vrank being out there.

This strategy tends to work well as long as the other team doesn't have post players that can make you pay.

We all know K likes the small ball strategy when he can put the shooters on the floor. I can easily see him occasionally going w/Duval,Trent, GA,Tucker/White at the 4 and Bolden/Carter at 5 for a few minutes....OFC

But K also has used 4 bigs (Zoubs, Lance, Miles & Mason) so it's not like he can't go that direction as well.

Oh Jake agree w/you my friend, and I like that option equally as well. The more different looks we show folks the better!

Take the South Carolina game. Gotta give coach Frank Martin credit for having our style so well scouted. He really took our "small ball" style out of the game by bottling up Luke.....OFC
