Was never in favor of it. I just support the idea of having to take advantage of it now to try to compete. Nobody was more against NIL than me, nobody haha
I was at Hofstra when Jay was still there and saw how he generated excitement on Long Island, which is almost impossible to do in the absence of TV and any real media focus. When he was interviewing at RU, I wrote to him encouraging him to accept the offer, talking up Rutgers basketball. Unfortunately Nova dumped their coach in a heartbeat and went after Wright. I have often wondered how much better the past 20 years would have been had Jay come to RU. I have little doubt that he would have been at least as successful at RU as he was at RU.
And to add to the several "classy guy" posts above, about 3 months after he left for Villanova, I received a letter from him, thanking me for my letter and stating what a great university he thought RU is. He also had kind words for Mulcahy, our AD at the time.

The reality of coaches retiring because it’s harder to exploit high school/college kids now that they can earn money for their value, only to be readily and eagerly replaced by another coach more than willing to work with that same reality?

Legend has always been he was in the car on the Turnpike headed to RU to sign on the dotted line when 'Nova fired Lappas and called him.
He really has nothing left to prove.
Won multiple titles, been to a bunch of Final Fours, Naismith HOFer. The game is changing so much he probably would just rather go work in TV and let someone else deal with buying kids.

This. TV will pay more and be far more easier and less stressful. Imagine having to deal with teenagers who have asking prices lol and having the re-recruit them every year now with the portal
I dunno, I think the BE recently got tougher. Thad Mata, Sean Miller. BE should become a stronger conference top to bottom.
Granted you still have Ewing at GU & DePaul is still bad TFN.
Yet at the end of the day they both need each other and in most relationships that means both have value

the players need the schools significantly more than the schools need the players. Frankly, it's really not that close
Nova would never bring in Pitino, and honestly, Pitino has no interest in going anywhere because the AD at Iona is his buddy, they leave him alone and he can do whatever he wants in recruiting because Iona has no reputation to protect.
Nobody should want that job. They just need to make LeBron player-coach.
None of us have any idea why he’s retiring. We can only speculate.
I would say NIL is low on his list of reasons. Wright turned Nova from a BIG 5 school into a legit blue blood and they have the infrastructure, donors, alumni and fanbase to be very successful in an NIL world. Wouldn’t make sense for that to be the reason to retire.

But that doesn’t matter. It’s also exactly why the schools are getting way more than the players. What’s the point?
Jay and his wife have a summer house down the street from me, both of them are classy people. The wife told me they had even bribed their kids with the promise of getting them a dog to move to NJ, they were all in, until Nova called.

The transfer rules and NIL stuff does make the job undeniably harder for college coaches so it's pretty reasonable to think burnout might happen sooner. Wright retired at 60. Mark Turgeon and Chris Mack left in the middle of the season and neither seemed very interested in coming back this cycle. John Beilein left Michigan a couple years before this really exploded but most reports were that he was tired of the grind and having to remake half or more of his roster every offseason etc.
Villanova would be well positioned in the NIL/transfer world but it's a lot more on a coach's plate that wasn't there 10-15 years ago.

I think that because of this, you are going to see coaches retire much younger than they used to
Winner at the highest level and did it without cheating and did it with class. Had to appreciate the way his teams competed if you were a fan of him or not.
My respect for him grew more over time as I saw how his teams played and watched how other slimy coaches handled their business.
Who knows. He might not have made it here. Remember after 3 years of waters and wright , many rutgers fans thought we had the better coach . No joke. Especially after the Magical NIT and celebrating for years
I like Wright a lot, but he hasn’t done it at the highest level (NBA), and we don’t know if Villanova has been cheating. Still one of the all time great college coaches.
I think all you need to know about Wright is after losing to Kansas he took the high road. Could have very easily brought up the fact Kansas has five level one violations pending but instead had nothing but praise for them. Had the shoe been on the other foot I seriously doubt Self would have done the same thing.
What violations are left when you can legally pay a kid a gazillion $ for coming to your school?

Waters didn't really build on that minor success. And I do think there would have been obstacles at RU for Wright that he didn't have at Villanova. That said, he would probably have done better than the parade of post Waters coaches.
Yes and I love that he had the humility to announce it without having everyone kiss his butt for his final year. Class act.
