Received my Holy Grail of jazz albums: We'll Be Together Again Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt

Not a priceless find by any means, except that it's an absolute mint condition, original pressing.

And it happens to be, w/o a doubt, my favorite album of that era. Ammons and Stitt are perfect on the recordings (recorded at various times during their careers, it's not a "session" album)

Red Sails in the Sunset actually makes my eyes water.

Sure you know that Stitt took a lot of criticism for copying Parker’s style. It apparently bothered the hell out of him. Enough so that he switched to tenor for awhile.

All in all though, he’s my sentimental favorite. And personally, I think he’s routinely underrated.

That's interesting. I listen to Jazz a ton when I'm doing work around the house, but haven't taken a deep-dive into learning some of the history. Hopefully this thread picks up some steam, so I can grab some cliff-notes.

I'd say if you cataloged my record collection, Dexter Gordon is in there more than anyone.

Daddy Plays the Horn by Dexter Gordon was the first jazz album I ever purchased.

He was an interesting guy. He used to like to recite the lyrics to "standards" beat style before he played them. LOL For some reason that cracks me up.

My favorite jazz artist is Duke Silver. He’s a madman on the sax. Difficult to find his albums on wax though.

Del Paxton’s Time To Blow is probably my all-time favorite jazz tune...but Duke Silver is the GOAT.

The best of Playtone Records.
