Every athlete guarantees a win, either they say it out loud or not. It's not a big deal but here in America, we tend to make big deals out of small stuff while giving free passes to the bigger stuff.
Almost every athlete is competitive and believes they can win. If they don't think they can or would win, then why would they compete? It doesn't make sense. The media is making a big deal out of nothing.
But this also explains why Marshawn Lynch says nothing to the media. You gain nothing from speaking to the media and you have a lot to lose. The media is known for twisting your words, leaving out phrases, shortening sentences, etc to sell a juicier and sexier story for ratings.
