Paraphrase: NU offense under Collins is great but the team has missed a crazy number of lay ups.

Call it luck, call it whatever. NU had a lot of ball luck against MSU. They had very little against Maryland. None against PSU where PSU made 4 or 5 shots that were very low percentage plus FT disparity in that game was killer.

Again, I have been critical of the administration and Collins. If more games are called like this and NU gets a little ball luck, NIT is possible. Have to beat Michigan. An upset over Purdue, Illinois or Wisconsin would be crazy.

It’s Jess Settles for one.

NIT is possible? Go out on the limb much? We have split with a top team in the BIG and a bottom team. We have lost close games to other apparently mid to upper tier teams. All games were close. We are right in the thick of this conference. We’ve got excellent depth, as witnessed yesterday. We got off to a slow start, but I still like our NCAA chances!

The perennial test is whether NU can beat top opponents who are paying full attention. Next exam is Tuesday against Wisconsin.

This might be more insightful than you even intended. I'm seeing so many posts about how what we did against Michigan State was so much smarter than what we've done in the three home losses. But, really, they were all the same games. We won at MSU because the opponent missed a clutch three near the end and then missed a free throw after the refs somehow gave them a do-over. Granted it was at MSU vs. home against lower lever B1G teams, but in each case we were tight at the end and dependent on a bit of ball luck for the W or the L.

The rest of this season may depend on whether we continue to be snakebit or whether after 40+ years of here-we-go-again, the luck changes a bit.

I've been saying this for a while. Teams making ridiculous shots, teams shooting way above the norm for the season (Penn State and Providence come to mind) -- and how many times over the years have we seen role players have career games against us when we shut the opposing star down? Some of it (probably a lot of it?) comes down to "jNW mentality" and other teams playing with confidence against us, but it's tough to deny we've had terrible luck. There's little difference between many of our performances. It's why I ignore chicken little posts -- 99% of us (myself include) on here have zero idea what we're talking about.

Not being much of a BB expert myself, it does seem like this team is more talented and deeper than most we have had in a long time and we have seemed competitive in most the games. So I kind of feel like they are better than their record. What I would like to see is for them to "go off" on somebody even a team like Nebby, who doesn't look that great, and just have a game of both hot shooting a luck. Sometimes you make your own luck.

By the way, How did we beat MSU without Nance? Is there a reason? Did not having Nance make it hard for MSU to prepare for the alternate game plan? Was it just that Ryan got hooter longer than usual? It seems unbelievable to me.

There are games decided by luck. No doubt about it. But o bet 50%+ of games that might appear as “luck” have other underlying explanation.

For example:
-Providence-we decided to go with a zone because their 3 point shooting was poor. Have you played pickup games where there are guys that are not good shooters and, because it’s a pickup game, have like 5 seconds to put up a 3? And magically you see multiple 3’s happening in a pickup game, of guys with bellies who can’t shoot? Well, play a closed zone worried about Nate Watson and chances are you give a fraction of a second more to those bad 3 pt shooters. Who are now good shooters. It’s a miracle.
-Guys having career games. Take the MD game for example. Ayala scored 26 and I think that was a career high. He averaged 15 last year and was averaging 15 at the time of the game. The thing about a player who averages 15, a very respectable average, is that said average is not higher because pretty much every opposing coach focuses on limiting that player. Otherwise, treating the player as a “normal” dude he’d average 20+. Against us he went off in the first half, benefiting from the substitution merry go round we do. Once Audige got on him, he was quiet. Second half he’s still quiet until Greer is on him. He scores two 3 pointers. Audige comes back to guard him and quickly gets to 4 fouls. So one can say sometimes there are flows in the game, decided by the coach, that might help career nights.

i want to believe this. And then there are half court shots and bail-out, one-legged threes at the end of the shot clock.

WI was 7-9 from 3. Missed 6 in a row and we did not close the gap. Go figure.
