Look, I am much more of a Jimmys and Joes person. I have always believed that the players are the biggest factor in who wins or loses.

I still believe that to be true when you have a coach that is at least competent.

But I watched all of the JMU Oregon game last night and it became evident to me that if SC had JMU"s OC and coaches this past year, SC wins at least 2 more games and probably more. Yes, even with the terrible offensive line.. Because the play calling is just so much different. That QB wasn't asked to stay in the pocket for 3 or 4 seconds.

Their talent is significantly below SC's on both sides of the ball. Did anyone look at their defensive line? They look like a high school team. But on offense, SC has better players at every position than JMU, yet there is no way SC would have sniffed the production of JMU this season or last night. That is coaching.

I'll bring it up again - Gary Patterson. Never had highly ranked recruiting classes but consistently turned them into Top 10 teams.

At the same time, talent overcomes a lot of coaching shortcomings. Two words: Whammy Ward.

Combine excellence in both and you have dynasties.

In college, I'd say it breaks down to 60/40 coaching. The best coach in the world can't overcome a real talent disadvantage. That is why some of the G5/P4 or FCS/P4 games are tight for a half before the P4 team wears down the smaller team with bigger, stronger, faster players with more natural ability.

When two teams with equal talent face each other, coaching, especially the coaching in preparation for the season and coaching in practice makes the difference.
