I went back and fixed it let’s not get started Dattier. I simply don’t understand the move especially should Zion return even if the plan is to sit White. Does anyone here truly believe he sees more then five minutes a game? Especially with White, Alex and Bolden on the bench or even if Zion doesn’t return

But if White is injured he can help us. I don't believe he will stay 4 years. And it will help him for next year. And Zion may be out another week. Seeding matters.

Ok so we all Know Tre, Barrett and Reddish will play at the very least 35 minutes a game and that leaves time between two spots. So Bolden and Javin lets say split forty and that leaves 55 minutes between Alex, White, Baker and Goldwire. This is also on the point that Zion doesn’t return. Should he he’ll play at least thirty minutes a game so that leaves 15 minutes to go around for White, O’Connell, Goldwire and Baker .

Depends on matchups and who’s hot. He looks like he could be an asset, when he becomes more comfortable. Things change, clones miss 25 in a row from three and give you an opportunity to step up, and play with your brothers, fight, win, destroy people’s hopes and dreams. Redshirting would suck ***. I bet their has been talk of this for awhile, and it work out that they needed jack white to think about his issues and gave Baker an opportunity to do what he really wanted to do all along. Play as one of the greatest recruiting classes ever.

Goldwire won’t get regular burn. IMO, Joey is there to split bench minutes and maybe provide some relief for Cam and RJ. Yes I agree with you that it’s meaningless if he sits the rest of the season. But come on dude, do you really think K would do this if he didn’t have a plan? Seriously?

I get that, all of it but why not sooner? I even like the fact that he, himself wanted it lifted to play and contribute as a member of this unique class. I just hope it’s not for nothing because he has four games in conference, atleast three games in the ACC tourney to adapt to college play before the tourney. I get he’s a shooter but he just shot his first three in a college game .

Yes I do especially if Baker himself asked for the redshirt to be lifted. I get it go with the hot hand but did he make an appearance in the second half? So can we also agree that he only has what four games in the strongest conference to adapt to college play and three games in the ACC tourney . That’s seven games and do you really see him playing much especially should Zion return?

White has missed something like 25 threes in a row. He's a great kid, but slump is not a strong enough word right now. K is looking down the bench to see what else he has over there.

I don’t think he plays 20 minutes a game if that’s what you’re saying, but if he can provide some shooters chances in games where we need it, I’m all in.

K has been coaching for over 40 years. I’m actually pretty shocked you think he made this move without having a reason other than Zion was hurt for a game or two and Joey offered himself up. I really am.

He may not of been ready earlier, they may have had more confidence that White would break out of his slump. We aren’t at practice, so we don’t know exactly what is going on, but if they burned it, there is a plan to use him. Jack white was a huge piece early on, when we were rolling. Maybe it takes two guys to get that type of production now. They are pretty similar, if white keeps playing like he was, this probably doesn’t happen, but they need bench help. They seem to think this will provide that, so I’m good with it.

I never said he plays twenty minutes, maybe he is good enough to get five minutes I don’t know. But I do know unless he gets five minutes why burn a red shirt with only four games left in the regular season. I think it’s like you said, he’s asked after Louisville to play and hopefully he’s confident enough he can contribute with the four games left headed into the post season. I don’t see it but that’s just my opinion but players can learn off the fly.
He is the prototype stretch four used in Dukes system so maybe he believes he will carve out minutes for himself. He’s got three days before the next game and three more games after that to adjust to college play.

So yea we don’t have time for Jack to play his way out of this slump. Especially with Zion out. Moving forward Baker may be the option instead of Jack. I liked his athleticism on that block. I don’t know why most of you are so worried about this redshirt. Four years is enough. Y’all are worried about 2023. If he plays to the potential he is supposed to have we won’t be seeing him in 2023 anyway

My feeling on this is that he will be plugged into several spots to give breathers. I’m thinking about 7-10 min a game, maybe a tad less. K apparently said he is doing this bc we need the shooting, so I’m guessing we will see Joey taking the 3s that Jack has been taking, and bricking. Sorry, Jack. 1/29 is unacceptable.

Yeah I love Jack but we need help. AOC played super but he won't score 20 every game. If we had first semester Jack we wouldn't need Baker.

Personally I like ha having the option. If we get in a dog fight in the finals and a few of our guys are struggling to score, I say let's try every player we have down to the last man and see if we can find a hot hand.

Exactly. We just became a more talented team today. Should it have been done earlier? Maybe, but Coach doesn't have a crystal ball.

Somebody said something about Joey going to K after Louisville and asking to play. I started thinking, if I were in his spot I’d likely want to play too. Think about it. We have a once in a generation team this year. It’s something special! I’m sure he has been dying to be a special part of that while watching from the bench this year. I’m not so sure this was solely a K decision. I think Joey wants his name associated with this special team. Just my thought.

College competition be damned, at the very least, he knows the plays. He’s not going to be asked to break any presses. He’s going to be asked to shoot. That’s enough for me.

Zion was enough to offset the bad shooting. IMO, K sees an opportunity to try to improve the shooting with Alex and Joey, and still get Zion back. Zion back with better shooters unequivocally means no one beats this team.

I was one of the earliest, and loudest, proponents of giving JB the RS this year. I thought a year of practice and lifting weights would do more for him this year, and Duke in the future, than any tangential benefits we'd see this year in what I expected to be fairly limited minutes. I expected AOC to be more consistent as a shooter, aka more nights like tonight, and a very few nights like his game vs UNC. I expected Jack to be a solid defender and rebounder. In my mind, JB's minutes would mostly come from the 3 frosh wings, and Jack Whites, and expected all of them to be ahead of him for various reasons.
.
I didn't expect Jack to be a perimeter scorer, or really any kind of consistent offensive producer. I truly didn't think it would matter. I thought Cam and Tre would be quality shooters, with AOC helping off the bench, while RJ and Zion attacked the rim.
.
Well, Joey has now had 7 months in a serious conditioning program, as well as all that time practicing vs our stud wings in practice. Another few months focusing on conditioning without worrying about game play would have been nice, but he's gotten a lot out of it already.
.
And the offense hasn't worked out how I thought it would. AOC clearly wasn't the consistent perimeter threat off the bench I expected. Initially this wasn't a problem because Jack more than covered what I expected AOC to provide. Even so, everyone else was on the lower end of expectations WRT 3pt shooting. Cam was barely on the low side, RJ and Zion were fairly close to (lowered) expectations, but Tre was significantly worse from the perimeter than I expected. Even with everybody being worse from 3 than expected, the D covered up what few holes that were left after Zion and RJ went HAM on opposing defenses. And, again, Jack's unexpected 3pt prowess made up for a lot.
.
Then Jack went cold. Only, maybe he didn't go cold. Maybe he was just hot for the first few months. Frankly, he'd begun to cool off (albeit slightly) even before he went ice cold. And he's now been bad for longer than he'd been good. His minutes have been dwindling in recent games, which leads me to believe that K was seeing something in practice that gave him more trepidation than we had, due to us only seeing his poor game performance. UNC might have been the straw that broke the camel's back.
.
With Zion healthy, there really wasn't much need to burn the RS. ZW, RJ, and Cam would approach 40mpg as the games got competitive, with Jordan, Jav (or Bolden), AOC, and Jack spelling our guys for a few minutes.
.
With Zion hurt....Well, that meant it was time for drastic action. AKA burning the RS. He didn't play on Wed because he'd probably had a tough training session during the day, and you can't train and play on the same day (not with an off season style/level of training anyways).
.
K had to try something, both in the short and long run. Jack might not return to what he was. Or even close to what he was. Or even to halfway to what he was. This might be who he is as a player. Solid on D and the boards, but weak offensively. A bigger Goldwire. Which is fine. But now that the reality of our perimeter shooting has manifested, or rather metastasized, K had to try something else. Maybe Baker ultimately helps on the perimeter by making shots. But the status quo wasn't going to get the job done.

I'm calling it now, ya'll... Joey Baker becomes this years freshman Grayson Allen and saves us in the championship game.

Serious note: is Baker playing indicative that the staff has basically lost hope in Jack? Has he officially ran out of time? I don't see the staff burning a redshirt towards the end of the season, playing a kid for three minutes, to send a message. You do that because you've ran out of options and it's next man up. I suspect we'll be seeing more Joey Baker even when Zion returns.

Anything we say is obviously purely speculation, but what I hope is going on here is K knows this team has a GREAT chance to win a title and is willing to exhaust any and all options to help them hang that banner. It's been said many times that Alex and Baker are two of our best shooters. Maybe he wants that option that if we are having a hard time scoring, maybe Joey can come in and hit a few shots. It's crunch time and we still have some regular season games, and the ACC tourney that can effect our seeding. Bottom line is, I don't think this was a knee jerk reaction. I think K has a very specific purpose

I don't think it was a knee jerk reaction either. I just hope that Joey didn't burn his redshirt for a few minutes or a couple games. But I'm everything had been discussed beforehand and I expect we'll be seeing a lot more of Joey and a lot less of Jack.

I'm sure he was threatening to transfer so K had to play him.

Ha! No doubt!!!

You know, like I said earlier. Can you imagine being on a team with Zion, RJ, and Cam and not playing with them? That would drive me NUTS!!

I’ve been to the future.... he just sits a waves a towel for the rest of the year. Coach K just needed a guy to pick up 3 fouls, against his will, When he really wanted to redshirt.

Just kidding. He plays some, and this doesn’t ruin his life.
He can get a job with NASCAR as the flagman. I like the decision and hope he goes nuts against the tarheels
