Just got the update that Johnny Dawkins was let go at Stanford. Sucks, I really like Johnny Dawkins and really hope he finds a new gig soon!
Maybe Rutgers, if he's a masochist.Just got the update that Johnny Dawkins was let go at Stanford. Sucks, I really like Johnny Dawkins and really hope he finds a new gig soon!
Totally disagree.Really thought JD would be able to make Stanford an annual tournament team, much like they were in the 90's.
I have read that Stanford is really cracking down on academic standards for their athletes, and that it crippled the basketball program. Much like Notre Dame the past 10 years in football.
Well, recruiting at a 'Blue Blood' school is much easier, let alone when you have Coach K on your right hip. I'm sure opportunities will arise for JD in the not so distant future.
I've watched a lot of Stanford basketball since JD took over the job (though not much this year). IMO, JD struggled as a coach and motivator, not as a recruiter. While he certainly didn't recruit at the level he did at Duke, before this year, Stanford's squads regularly had enough talent to consistently compete for NCAA tourneys and make some noise in the Pac 12 championship race (particularly before Arizona really picked it up the past 3-4 years). But JD's teams consistently blew games they shouldn't, struggled with TOs and shot selection, didn't execute well in late game situations, and just didn't consistently play with the type of energy and focus you need to be very good.
If you look at Rivals ratings, between 10-15, JD recruited one 5* kid, and 8 4* kids -- most, if not all, who stayed 4 years in an era where most coaches would dream for that kind of stability. From a pure talent perspective (at least as judged by recruiting rankings), JD's generally had a lot of pretty talented and very experienced squads that should have been able to win in a generally down cycle in the Pac 12.
JD's a nice guy and probably a very solid assistant. But, as the head man, I wouldn't hire him at a high-major program -- including A-10 or Big East jobs. I just don't think he's anything other than a mediocre head coach.
There ya go, Mate. Bring Penn back to respectability and live out your life at an Ivy school, in your hometown! Winner winner.Didn't live up to the hype. Prob do well at a smaller school aka Amaker at Harvard
