For those of you who know a little about passing mechanics, are you seeing what I see with a VERY low release?

Don't get me wrong, I REALLY like getting an athlete at QB who has great feet and has the arm to at least sling it--and with good height maybe he can get away with it-- but I think I read somewhere his Juco coach thought he had "the best mechanics he's ever seen." Just can't see that kind of statement when seeing his elbow below his shoulder at release point every time.

Fair question. I thought Teddy Bridgewater had a similar release when TB was in high school. I think it can be tweaked if needed.

We have to go with something "untraditional" if we are going to win enough to recruit with the big boys in the SEC.

Would he really have to be all that great to beat out D Barker ? We aren't exactly talking about Brady or Manning here.

I know we need QB depth, but I hope this doesn't upset Barker too much.

We need him focused. Not worrying.

Spring practice will be fun here @ Wildcat Lair........
Should be lots of spin.... Practice info from "insiders" will bring out new posers.... errr aaaaaa posters!
I'm going out on a limb and say that the competition at QB will be COLOSSAL!!!! Damn I been wanting to use that word.!!!
Gran & Hinshaw will be working more magic than Penn & Teller...
All good for ticket sales ... me thinks....

All I can say is I am looking forward to the competition, and may the best man win. Unless someone blows our coaches away I can see both getting snaps for a change of pace.

Two years ago our two QBs alternated getting all the snaps because the other was injured.

Barker either rises to the occasion or falls. Sounds like Johnson could be the real deal.

hopefully whoever wins the starting job does well. otherwise the backup QB will be everyone's favorite player all over again

Would that cause another "divide" amongst the players? Or was that mainly on the shoulders of Dawson?

Probably more on the shoulders of Dawson. Dawson would live and die (he chose die) by a certain group of players. A lot of receivers in the rotation that probably deserved minutes, didn't get them. For the longest time, Barker didn't get minutes, and he deserved them more than Towles. That started losing us games, and no matter what team you're on, if you start losing a lot of games, you're going to question certain guys. He should have got a hold on it and squashed that, and he didn't do that.

The team wants to win, and they want the best option to win.

I don't care who plays as long as it's whoever gives us the best chance to win man. These guys know the stakes.

Barker isn't as good as Towles. Doesn't have his physical tools. He will have much better coaching now than Towles got while here.

Towles looks great when there is no pressure. He had two years to show something and did nothing great. Jury still out on Barker. He played what 2 games with a unit that had already quit.

It's going to hurt Barker that he isn't as tall as Towles, Barker is maybe 6'2(stretching), his arm isn't nearly as strong as Towles, and he is much slower that Towles. His release is slower than Towles because he holds the ball lower and his wind up takes longer. this will offset whatever decision making advantage he had on Towles. I'm glad that the coaches went out and found Johnson.

Not sure what you're seeing but barkers release is as quick or quicker than Towles simply because the movement is faster... Where your arm starts doesn't necessarily relate to faster or slower.

And when you take 7 seconds before you even begin your motion, as Pat often did, then your release speed doesn't really matter.
