Joint Possession

I know there are other coaches and maybe some refs on this board but that joint possession call on the muffed punt seemed wrong.

So the punting team is still on offense, NU punted, it gets muffed, scramble for the ball. No one has taken possession yet. NU is still "on offense", both players have control of the ball, so why would possession be awarded to Michigan?

Wouldn't it go to the team on offense OR wouldn't it be better if the refs just actually made a call as to who had it?

You have too much logic for big ten refs. It continues to be amateur hour in this conference.

I have coached for like 20 years and have seen my share of that play but I just don't understand that call.

If they both had the ball, why did Michigan get it?

I didn’t think about that at the time. But you are right. They never gained possession, so how do they get the ball on “joint possession”? Odd to say the least.

Receiving Team muffs a punt and is jointly possessed by Kicking Team and Receiving Team.

If any scrimmage kick or free kick is jointly possessed anywhere on the playing field, it belongs to Receiving Team.

It sucks but unfortunately for NU the right call was made on the Dual Possession. The Big ten officials were awful last night but they did get that one right.

Watch it again. The Michigan player was "possessing" the ball with the back of his knee. Show me any other example in the history of football where a player was considered possessing the ball when it was against the back of his knee. Insane.

We need the Iowa guy to tell us what happened to Iowa in 1998, to justify this as just a normal call…

No, because Michigan did not receive the ball, that is the point

Secondly, joint possession implies 50/50, which means that both players would have to have exactly the same size hands to have exactly the same amount of the ball. I think it is safe to assume that is not the case.

So now it is up to the ref to make a call. In fact, the only call they could not make was the one that they made.

Other than calling it joint possession in the first place. What a joke that is.

Actually the receiving team turns into the "offense " when ball is punted

I have never ever heard of anything like this in all the years of watching or following football..

It’s like in baseball the tie goes to the runner … No, you’re either safe or your out!

Today my wife asked me to carry some groceries in from the car. I tried carrying the bag with the back of my knee. It wasn't going well at all. Frustrated, my wife screamed: "please carry it," and I said "according to Big Ten officiating, I am."

The Big Ten is always on the cutting edge. They have invented a new way to hold things with the back of your knee.
