Breakout game at Marquette tonight with 26 points. Losing that guy really hurts. And then there is Horton-Tucker who is starring as a Frosh at Iowa State. We needed a difference maker in our Freshman class to help right away...Oh well...I still have confidence in Collins recruiting. Things just didn't break our way this time. I think it's going to take awhile to get things going again with three seniors doing the bulk of the scoring this year.

But it has been a disappointment that Nance is not really doing anything at this point
Kopp is doing reasonably well but neither one of them are as good as advertised at this point. Course there's a long season to go and they could get much better.

And they will. Just have to learn to defend better, as most freshman do...

Kopp is showing more confidence every game. He had a few good drives tonight and his defense is improving. But we are going to need him and Nance to provide something. The total absence of a bench has hurt us in two close games now.

The scoreboard kate in the game showed Michigan’s bench only had 3 points. The same as ours.

Honestly, his defense was horrific tonight. He had to get yanked and never came back. Nance the same but Nance is so stiff it's like he lacks thorough confidence. Kopp truly has a shot and CAN contribute ONCE he learns defense. #13 pimped him with several moves and it was impossible for Collins to play him anymore.

If Nance is "not really doing anything" I'll take one of those each recruiting year please.

In Kopp’s defense (no pun intended), that No. 13 you referenced could be a one-and-done kinda player. Ignas Brazdeikis is as impressive a freshman as I’ve seen in the Big Ten — and he’s only played nine games. He’s got length, he can put it on the floor, he can shoot from distance, he can create his own shot. The guy is a beast. He went for 23 points. No one could really stop him.

Gaines did a great job on him in 2H I thought, but your point remains, that kid's a stud

He's probably one of the best players we will face all year.

Bigs are often developmental. In HS just their being big is enough but at this level they need a lot more. They will get there.

Where the hell does Michigan find a kid like this?

So you remember Gaines at the beginning of last year? Compare that with what you see this year. Neither is a one and done but both have a lot to offer

One on one, Gaines shut him down pretty effectively.

If Nance gains 25 pounds,he may be our best player ever. Kopp is sensational for a frosh! Good recruiting

Why do you have confidence in Collins' recruiting when we've had 1 player that can really contribute since that first class (Pardon)?

It's a good question.

Of course, he did recruit Taylor and Turner......

As a whole, I feel like Collins has made NU legitimately competitive in the BIG. We look kinda' like the other teams now in terms of size and athleticism. The skill level isn't quite there yet, but the toughness is. Carmody gave us teams that could finally compete in the BIG for which I am forever grateful. But his teams always seemed kind of fluky. They were gimmicky. They didn't play great defense and they would get killed on the boards. But they ran a funky offense and slowed the game down. While that allowed them to keep games close, it was clear the other teams were superior in terms of size and athleticism. Collins seems to have closed that gap. We still aren't winning enough yet and as I said above, I think we need more skill to go with the improved athleticism, but he has us on track.

If you’re not a top 50 guy yet seeing meaningful minutes in meaningful games a month in to your career, then you’re doing just fine

I'm not savvy enough to search through the threads, but I seem to remember the Rivals area recruiting guy saying Nance was ranked at least as much on potential as anything else. I read that as, stay patient, it’s all in there, but needs to be developed. It’s easy to look at the ranking and think the guy should come in and be an immediate stud (which we all certainly hoped for), but I’m pretty darn sure we were warned just about the time he committed that the ranking was more forecast than current ability.

i think if law/skelly/lindsey were recruited today and had to contribute on a team with a high level of play like kopp/nance/greer do - they would be exposed for the same type of mistakes. they got the benefit for years of playing with no remorse as there was no depth

yes i believe Nance was highest rated NU recruit ever coming in. i believe Beran is ranked higher. still a huge transition and kids are ranked for lots of different reasons. higher ranked guards generally transition faster than bigs.

Haywood, what type of an injury does Falzon have. Also does Ash’s knee tighten up after comes out from a seven or eight minute stretch of playing. I noticed last night, if I’m not mistaken, he played in the first half and then I didn’t see at all in the second half.
I was quite encouraged by our play last night and I think once we start getting more quality minutes out of the young guys you will see a good deal of improvement. When we have to go with five guys going the last ten minutes the guys get dog tired which you can tell by their shooting accuracy.

Taylor needs to be more consistent and Turner needs to pop from time to time.

Still need someone to be that scorer off the bench.

Shurna, Coble, Crawford and Juice all scored well into the double-digits (on a 40 mins per basis) during their frosh years and they were less heralded recruits.

Still expect big things from the frosh, but need just one of them to start being that 4th scorer or option off the bench.

We'll never know, but I generally feel like frosh on good teams benefit because all they have to do is come in and play a role really well. They don't have to be the leaders. You see a lot of frosh look really good their first year and then never really develop into a star because what they did as freshmen is as far as they can go.

None the less, its early December. Let's see where Nance and Kopp are in February.

I'm going with Kopp. His defense needs to improve but he seems to be getting more comfortable on offense.

Don't think it's a injury that causes Ash to sit a lot.
