our lead guard position would certainly look different with him in there
And the athletic department would look really different if the students discovered what he was accused of and he was on campus absent being completely exonerated. Students would demand Collins, AD and President all be fired regardless of how they tried to spin it. That’s just how NU works. So yeah there’s that.

And what ever happened to innocent until proven guilty. What a joke. This, like many of the Constitutional protections worth their salt, means nothing anymore. It seems like the only thing the Constitution does is keep slavery banished, women voting and guns in the hands of everybody - sane or otherwise.
I read about a theory of a coup plot in the news yesterday. One that would have been led by the FBI and said #fakenews. Not in this Democracy, not with our great Constitution and Government. Actually, not sure many folks would really care anymore.
It wasn't a criminal trial. The athletic department is perfectly within its rights to let him go if there was misconduct. I have no information about the incident that got Lathon dropped and speculation about it is foolish without knowing the particulars.
No its actually pretty simple. There is no way that given any allegations of wrongdoing (proven or not) against a recruit that NU can take a isk and bring him on campus. The downside at a place like NU is way to great. Let's say Collins believed 100% that Lathon was innocent but then law enforcement opened a case and it became public in late October. Collins would be crucified in the media and likely fired. I think that Phillips and even Morty would have been in trouble. NU community simply would not accept any excuse from Collins and this is regardless of the ultimate outcome. I truly believe this was the calculation made by Collins and NU. UTEP appears to be the only school that figured differently. I can come up with a number of theories as to why but not one of them help NU or SMU or any other school that looked at Lathon after NU dropped him.
So yeah, I wish Lathon well and hope the storm passes but I understand why NU did what it did.

Innocent until proven guilty is related to criminal trials. It does not relate to rescinding a scholarship offer, which is ultimately a privilege at the discretion of the university. If you have broader concerns about the constitution and it's role in America today, please take that to a political forum as we try to keep this to sports. Thanks

i think it would have played out much differently had Lathon already been a student at NU
Haywood, out of morbid curiousity, do you have a sense of how appealing NU was to Ayo? That is to say, if Lathon hadn’t committed when he did, and Ayo took the visit he had planned, what are the odds that Collins lands him instead of Underwood?
the way NU works? that's the way society works. Look at all the times in the past where schools have fired coaches over covering/trying to cover something up! NU is not any different in that aspectAnd the athletic department would look really different if the students discovered what he was accused of and he was on campus absent being completely exonerated. Agree except when applicable to a sports item - like now. When the topics cross, they are fair for discussion here.

What are the allegations? It’s amazing that anyone is still clamoring for Lathon to be on campus, given the allegations.

Then why is it amazing that people are clamoring when the majority don't know what you think you know? It’s looking more and more like it won’t end up going public. And I’m certainly not going to be the person that lets it out.
Haywood I think your one sentence statement says it all about recruiting in the city. Just stay away from that crowd.i have heard that NU has a long way to go to get kids from that AAU program, and they wont get into "business" for kids
We have a bunch of posters proudly proclaiming that they're in a club and they want you to know they're in the club and they want you to know you're not in the club. And more and more posters are now proclaiming that they're in the club, and Big Ten Network announcers are apparently in the club, and they probably have their own club too. Then why is it amazing that people are clamoring when the majority don't know what you think you know?

I have no doubt that NU made the right decision. I just wish I knew what the offense was. Some of us know through contracts or friends. Just know this...it was a no-win situation for Collins. If he’d kept him and the info came out, it would have been very, very bad for NU.
It’s an example because in the Corporate world the real story almost always leaks. It’s usually not a bad thing for the Corporate Manageteam when it does.I have no doubt that NU made the right decision. I just wish I knew what the offense was.
As an aside, there were times my Company terminated someone for a breach of ethics or for cause. We on the Management Team always said behind closed doors this would set an example of our standards. Yet we never released what the individual did to get themselves axed, so how would this serve as an "example"??? There is no right answer, but I think the benefit of transparency slightly outweighs that of privacy. Rumors inevitably fill the void of "no comment".....
Isn't that because you along with everyone not named Lathon, Collins, Phillips, Morty and the "victim" don't know what happened? It’s looking more and more like it won’t end up going public. And I’m certainly not going to be the person that lets it out.

Except UTEP and others who may have offered. My reference to the way NU works is a product of having a student at NU and hearing him discuss his dealings on campus. But yes, there is a reason every power 5 school with an opening on their roster acted the same way NU did. Lathon is a real talent and in a business where winning is the only thing, you can bet that schools vetted the situation extensively.
i go to NU now and im sure the reaction here wouldn't be much different than if this happened elsewhere. But yes, for everyone saying he was dropped for dumb reasons, don't you think Mizzou, Texas Tech, Louisville, Nebraska or many of the other schools that contacted him would've gone for him then? There's a reason he fell so far.My reference to the way NU works is a product of having a student at NU and hearing him discuss his dealings on campus. I predict UTEP will make the NCAA Tournament again before Northwestern does. It will be their 18th time.By the time it came down to UTEP, there were no “others.”
