Ayo's a stud, but if Lathon is here for 4 years, versus Ayo's 1 year...it's not even a debate.

I think that Lathon may be a better athlete and Ayo might be the better player today but by next fall, who knows.

The shoe story has some really nice highlights of Lathon that show his athleticism. I really wanted Ayo to be a Cat. I'm glad he's going to Illinois bc I think its important that Illinois players start to stay home. Tired of them going to Duke and Kentucky.

Will be interesting to see how much Lathon's game develops playing at IMG. Big plus, IMO.

L>ayo. I think it is basically a moot point. Let's see it play out for the games where they face off! I think our team/coaches/players will do very well!

Mike prefers the empty schollie.
We tried to get Ayo and were unsuccessful (we are not yet the destination for the one and dones) and the comparison was Lathon vs Ayo not vs empty schollie. Lathon would likely have done far more for us than Ayo because he would have been here longer. Underwood is going to have to have another PG on the line because Ayo will be gone. Think Lathon in his second, third and fourth year vs Ayo replacement as a true Frosh.

Ayo is likely a 2 and done. He will be back. Not a one and done.

Trent Frazier plays the point as much or more than Ayo. He has two more years. Lathon may be good but is he better than Frazier? Remains to be seen.

As far as Ayo doing less for Illinois than a four year guy, I would disagree. Ayo has made Illinois a cool place to go again. Helped with Kofi. Is helping with Miller and Steward, either who would be at Lathon level.

Ayo is a projected first rounder on every draft board I can find. Why would he stay instead of take first round money?

Hey Mike, sounds like Ayo and Frazier are two ballhandling guards on the same team. There’s my first submission.

Mike - And Palmer and Watson looked pretty good tonight too. That’s my second submission.

Ayo is not a point guard. We've got five guys that can "handle the ball". That is not the same as being a point guard. Ball handling is just one element.

Palmer had six assists. I would be happy to have a Palmer. Or an Ayo. Or some veteran guards able to distribute, make plays, run the offense. Seems like it is possible to have multiple ballhandling guards on a roster at the same time after all. Go figure.

Nothing moves. Let me breaki it down for you, simple like. The roster should breakdown, assuming a one guard main lineup with lots of two guard play, ability to go big or small:

PG Jr, PG frosh
Wing Sr, Wing Jr, Wing So, Wing Frosh
C Sr, C So

G Sr, G So
Wing
S4 Jr, S4 frosh

13 schollie players every year. Room for failure, transfer, flexibility. Most important positions to monitor are PG followed by C. Gs should have ballhandling capability, not just 3 & D types.

No project recruits in years where any frosh or sophomores appear to be practice players.

But Mike, I expect two legit ballhandlers in the starting lineup, an established playmaker and the legit backup on the bench.

As we roll into ncaa season, I will provide you some examples. I expect examples from lessor programs. Players a really good recruiter should be able to land.

CCC has failed to stock the roster with legit guards. He is too dependent on frosh - ok if you are duke, formula for failure at NU. And he is not looking great at C, but I’ll hold judgement on that until next year.

He has shown not to be a good in game coach. He does not seem to develop players, take talent to higher levels - Kopp, Nance will be the next test.

I would give him 3 or 4 years and then make a move. CCC, IMHO, needs to add Brian James type coaches for guards and wings. (Pardon is possibly the only case for developed player and James probably due the credit.) CCC needs to be willing to learn too.

Good luck providing examples of these perfect lineups! Was that you who provided all those examples to Haywood about how teams were underutilizing their starters relative to Collins? Or do I have you confused with another poster?

Reading comprehension Mike. I said that was the roster I would like to see. But the debate, unless you concede, is that it is possible to have two quality guards with legit ballhandling skills on the roster at the same time.

I appreciate you constantly trying to change the topic and move the bar, but not today. And I suspect I will find many such lineups in the dance because good teams have multiple quality guards often.
