I gotta admit that's some solid imagery. I could be wrong but my impression is on average we've finished higher than our preseason ranking and higher than our recruiting rankings
Baylor has 3 conference rings in that time but I would prefer our last 21 years to theirs
Look, when Gundy was hired AS A REQUIREMENT for Boone’s involvement and investment, OSU was being put on a path to winning Football.
It involved many moving parts that made sure we were maximizing opps. From the shoes being worn and beds being slept on, to the coaches that were hired. *look no further than the issue that Gundy didn’t go to coaches conferences and coaching talent seeking events…he didn’t have to. Surely you can admit he hired Yurcich from google searches.* There was a group of people that looked through every angle to give us our best chance at success.
It’s also no secret that Gundy was upset at the Holgy hire after his terrible performance as OC/HC in 2009. That is where the ego and personalities began to clash.
So, Holgy comes and kills it. Gundy was slighted the credit, his ego couldn’t take it. He threw a fit about the next hire (actually wanted to return himself to OC duties) but Monken was hired. That’s one of the best hires of his tenure, Knowles and Holgy are the others. The Monken hire came with the understanding that we would continue the Air Raid. Then we see our program crest in 2011.
When Monken left (who also got tons of credit instead of Gundy) the beginning of the end of our Program really took off. Do you remember the contract fights, the flirting with other jobs (and actually lying about a few of them) along with clamoring for control of HIS Program?
Enter Yurcich AND the beginning of Gundyball. That hire right there was a big middle finger to Boone, Holder and OSU. Our success was propped up by NFL talent on O for a few years…and we still couldn’t win a conference title when the two giants were in downtrends.
Gundy believed he was the smartest man in the room, he believed he should have the credit and he took everything that had been put in place to make OSU what it was and put it in the rear view.
Was it a good tenure of OSU Football? Yes! My burns come from knowing what should’ve been to seeing what is. The big rub to me, Gundy is now hurting the Wrestling Program (new world, money, etc.) as well as other sports. Football is the money maker, but it’s fallen behind because the pocket books know what has transpired over the last decade and they aren’t funding a negative investment. Do you not find it odd that Boone just faded away the last 5-6 years of his life?
