According to news the man had significant mental issues that was over looked , would smaller schools help this problem ? I was last class of R-W & it was great they built RCB & now there is more trouble in school , just a thought, don't know so many different things

Part of the issue is that everyone seemed to think he would be a kid that would do something like this yet there is nothing in place to flag him and get him help. Mental health issues plays a huge part of this type of incident.

They need to treat schools like other govt. Buildings. You can have multiple exits but you should only have 1 entrance and then guard that entrance. Until you can stop the supply of people who are willing and able to hit soft targets you better make the kids a harder target.

What could be done had he been flagged? That wouldn't stop him from purchasing the guns. Would the state/feds pay for him to get help?

He put out a you tube video declaring he would be a professional school shooter. The FBI had been warned of him as far back as September. They could have taken his guns legally

This was supposedly one of the best schools in the area. If he can slip through the cracks there, I don't know what to think.

Well, The GOP repealed the Obama era rule that let the FBI access ss disablitly payments for severe mental illness in order to make it easier to flag possible mental issues when obtaining a permit. In fairness, that repeal was supported by the NRA and the ACLU.

And how do you determine when to "flag". The media has been talking about his posts where he describes that he likes "hunting, shooting and guns". The same type of stuff me and my friends openly talked about when we were that age. Do we need to cross reference it with posts that go into detail about violence? Cruelty to animals seems to be a trend among killers like this.

There's got to be some legal grounds to prevent him from purchasing and owning.

And that Obama era rule was more targeted at vets and it was broader than "severe mental illness". As I said above, there's got a be some legal grounds and process before we start denying people their rights.

This kid was a powder keg, and had just lost his adoptive mother. There would have had to been some major personal intervention by friends or family to prevent this from happening.

Are we going to create a new federal bureau of Social Media watchers for gun purchases? I'm up for anything but feel the 2 sides will refuse to budge when it gets down to it. Even the bump stocks are still legal. Things will quiet down after a few days, nothing will change and the cycle will repeat itself.

Perhaps if FBI personnel weren't texting each other 50,000 times about taking down Trump they could've done something about the warning they received on him last September.

This kid did more than talk about hunting and shooting. He declared himself a professional school shooter last September.

So many underlying parts to this , start by enforcing laws on the books, then look at school size , more personal relationship between student & faculty, definitely need better mental health,
I don't have a clue nobody does so freaking sad . Losing a child is crippling at the very least ...

Not that I have any answers, but I think you are chasing a lost cause with school size. People aren't going to spend more money for more public schools.

Don't know.... First step should be, at the very least, secure facilities and provide better on site security.

Can't believe I'm doing this.........but Dave is 100% CORRECT! There should be a security guard at every front entrance of the parking lot at schools, who then radios ahead to the office with the person's name and reason for being there, then only one entrance in, with security measures there as well.......and any student or school personnel caught propping doors open or letting others in are severely punished on their FIRST offense.

This is a start.......

Would school vouchers help with school size, get kids in smaller groups better chance of fitting in , better chance of getting to play on a sports team better chance at not feeling so lost in a large group at such a vulnerable age better chance at a better education ,better chance of having more adult supervision....we have a problem & taking the means does not fix the problem

Is it feasible to track every single person that goes in or out of a school during a day? Seems kinda ambitious.

You can't prevent crazies, but you sure as hell can slow 'em down....and hit 'em back if they get past your barriers. Armed ex-military and what @dave suggests here for ALL schools!

Nobody disagrees with that. The only issue is who determines what a nut job is and can that nut job appeal.

Agree...but I think someone commented that this nut should not have been able to own any gun since the FBI knew about him.

Heroin is a schedule I drug and is illegal to possess in the U.S. but thanks for weighing in.
True...but you can easily get it anytime you want it. Do you realize you made Mntneer's point.

He didn't make Mntneer's point. No one is calling for us to legalize heroin to curb ODs. The opioid deaths in this country are high, how much higher would they be if heroin was legalized?

I don't care about his weak "argument" or crack pot theory or whatever you want to call it. AR-15s are made for killing people in a very efficient manner. I see no reason for them to be available to anyone other than the military. If they are the weapon of choice for mass murderers, why not make them more difficult to attain?
