Good hire for Michigan as he's highly regarded in basketball circles but was only around the pro game. Mich better hope Howard doesn't become Jim Harbaugh in hoops.

Really hope we get Mich in Big 10/ACC. Rose may have coronary when Duke beats his buddy.

Mich fans crack me up, they own 1.5 basketball/football national titles combined over past 70 years but think of themselves as Bama or Duke.

My buddy is a UM fan and he acts as if they are the royal cream of the crop in both sports. I like to regularly remind him that they merely only manage to stay relevant lol.

I suspect Michigan wanted to see if they could copy Memphis in getting a former pro who can recruit well and quickly. I couldn't care less about the NBA so I have no idea if he was a good assistant coach but he appears to have been pretty good.

Seems like a good hire. But the last guy did such a great job it's a tough act to follow. People complain about Harbaugh but if they hired someone else I suspect they would do worse. Meyer is gone so that may help bring Ohio State back to the pack.

And they are lucky to have that .5 title in football, because had they played Nebraska that year for the title they would have been demolished.

Jason Peter probably would have knocked Brian Griese out of the game... only to have Tom Brady come off the bench and pull off a comeback for the ages.

But yeah, Michigan fans are silly. Michigan State is the premier Big Ten school in basketball, and Ohio State in football. It's been that way for quite some time. Somebody's gotta be the little brother, though, am I right?

Herein lies the problem. Juwan Howard isn’t coming in to ‘save’ the program. He’s inheriting a pretty well-established and successful program over the last decade. The pressure, save maybe next season because of the defections, will be almost immediate. IMO, this is a really tough job for him to inherit considering recent success. The ‘win’ factor seems low to me. Juwan Howard has zero head coaching experience and his program has played in two national championship games the last seven years. That’s tough.

He's the people's choice and I've always thought of him as a nice guy. I just think w/no head coaching experience he's going to have a tough time achieving anything results wise close to his predecessor. OFC

My thoughts as well. Been pretty noticeable that two of the biggest openings this Spring and Summer have been filled by former All-American bball players in Howard and Stackhouse to Vandy. They’re following the Penny to Memphis model. One of the untold stories regarding Penny going to Memphis involves the college coaching experience that several of his assistants have. Yes, Penny brought in Matt Miller to help recruit but he also brought in veteran assistants to help with Xs and Os.

If Michigan wants to succeed moving forward in the post Beilein era, they’ll need to bringing a couple assistants that have that college coaching experience and who can keep in place Michigan’s ability to coach up non highly rated commitments. They’ll also need to bring in a guy that’s got those AAU recruiting connections, as Howard is being brought in for his coaching ability primarily vs Penny for his recruiting acumen.
