Couldn't agree more with these sentiments.

The LSU game was even worse in some respects because they didn't even play that well. We were just worse somehow.

J.J. was from another planet his senior year. Some folks forget he was so good he was the first men's basketball player to win the Sullivan Award since Bill Walton in '73 IIRC.

I’ve gave this account a number of times, but here it goes again....

We’re playing lousy. Up five, somehow. It’s midway through the second half and J.J. gets a wide-open look on the right wing. Misses and leads to a run out for their athletes. His jumper was right on, just long. From potentially up eight to only three in less than a handful of seconds. Had a bad feeling at the time....those feelings soon became reality. Hat even thinking about it.

Dukiejay, it's been so long since I've seen that game but your description of that sequence is ringing a bell.

I hate to even say this--especially if I'm wrong, and because he's one of my favorite players ever in any sport--but is the following statement accurate, based on my recollections?

If J.J. had been as spectacular during his NCAA Tournament career as often as he was during regular season and ACC Tournament games, we'd likely have at least one more title.

To be serious unc is a powerul institution with powerful alumni. They be the most powerful athetic program in the NCAA and they are treated differetly. hof coach williams stated way before the came down that everything was going to be fine. How did he know that. The notication of alligations was just a formality by the NCAA to pacify the critics. OFC
I would put them in the top 5,but , I have always put Suckeye U, in first. I cannot believe some of the stuff that they have gotten away with. Claret or whatever his name was comes to mind. They are as teflon coated in football as the Tarholes are in BB. After the 18 year cheat fest that Tarhole tech got by with , the NCAA should never bother another school over damned near anything.

That’s fair to say. J.J. had tournament games where he didn’t even approach average.

My favorite quote from the article:
I think we saw that in the North Carolina case [involving alleged academic misconduct]. I have my doubts that the membership really truly, truly wants to punish these schools and punish coaches like Bill Self.

KU getting Level 1 infraction for not turning Zion Williamson into the NCAA. Also claiming Adidas is a KU booster. This could open up a can of worms for every university sponsored by a shoe company.

In no way do I want to discredit JJ's Duke career, but yes, it was unfortunate he seemed to not play his best ball in the NCAA's. But my goodness he was a monster his senior year. As a marked man on a marked team he averaged 27 points and shot 41% from 3 (I did have to look up those stats). He worked so hard to be faster coming off those screens for threes, and it was like every shot was money. It was absolutely amazing to watch!

JJ always will be one of my favorite Dukies ever. However, it's hard not to consider his tournament failures.

The one that still bothers me the most is 2004. I listen to every episode of his podcast, and a common theme he brings up is how little he cared about basketball early on in his Duke career. He partied a ton and discusses how he wanted to quit during his sophomore year.
The 2004 final four loss will forever sting, sophomore JJ wasn't great that game. 4-12 from the field and 3-9 from three, he missed 2 wide open threes in the closing minutes as well.
If just 1 of those goes down.........

99 remains the worst for me. That team really had no weaknesses.

94 Arkansas was bad because that was my senior year at Duke but that was ameliorated somewhat by the fact that we won back-to-back my freshman and sophomore years.

We weren’t expected to make the Final 4 in ‘99 and Arkansas was a more complete team than that Duke team. Grant literally carried us to the championship game and ran into an Arkansas team that had Corliss Williamson and Scotty Thurman got hot from outside.

We had the best player but they had a better duo in Corliss and Thurman. Not sure how that’s anywhere close to an upset as the ‘99 team or the Lehigh and Mercer losses.

I agree, but as I mentioned, that was my senior year at Duke. After a few days I was comforted by the fact that we won 2 my first two years, but the Monday night and Tuesday after the Arkankas loss stung like a *****. That's why I mentioned it... just a different animal when these wins and losses happen when you're a student.

No offense intended at all to anyone who wasn't. I mean I was ecstatic like all Duke fans when we won in '01, for example, but it was just different being on campus.

It makes me feel better knowing KU had to cheat to beat us two seasons ago. And frankly, I am sure they cheated to beat us going back to when Self first arrived in Lawrence. He always had a dirty way about him and his players. A lot of questionable things have involved his teams for 15 years.

I hope KU gets crushed for their filthy, nasty, gross, terrible and disgusting cheating. But I will not hold my breath :)
To quote Jerry Tarkanian. "The NCAA was so mad at Kentucky, they gave Cleveland State two more years of probation."

And cheating unc cheater u gets off scott free. There's something wrong with this and l'm not talking about KU,GT,NCSU, Arizona or whoever gets caught up in this. You do the crime you pay the time as the old saying goes. What's wrong is unc cheater u is still eligible for all tournament play, national championships, full recruiting privileges and everything else . Nothing at all but you know what really pisses me off. That arrogant, entiltled, priviledged butt hole of a coach hof coach roy williams had the nerve to whine and cry that the allegations against unc cheater u hurt his recruiting. How arrogant and smug can a human being be. You can call Cal, Pitino, Sean Miller and all the rest caught up in this slime balls if you want to but hof coach williams, ACC commissioner john swofford and everyone else down at that corruptable university are phlem balls. They all knew and got away with it. No respect at all. Not today, tommorow or forever. OFC
