Someone feeling bad for these people laid off......they are high-paid, contractually protected, probably received 6-figure packages, and will get other opportunities quickly (while double-dipping on their new pay AND severance).

My advice to them? Suck it up, Buttercup. There are millions of people suffering far worse than they are. They'll survive.

As for ESPN? Their business model is arguably class- and racially-divided, and they are far Left leaning, something that doesn't have the best track record of business success (and I am Independent).

THIS!!!!

I feel bad for these people that were laid off but not any more than I would for someone who was hypothetically laid off from a fast food restaurant. For the people who are crying about all of these ESPN workers losing their jobs, would you feel the same way about someone losing their job at Burger King?
No one is crying. As far as criticism goes, it's the principle of rejoicing in another's disappointment. It doesn't matter who, or how much $ they make. As far as defense of it, I don't see much a validity other than as a detached celebration of something symbolic, not something really connected to their humanity.

I dont think anyone should be judgemental on how people react to ESPN folks losing their jobs... The network has sensationalized the Allen story to death, and has been outspoken on topics that bend people the wrong way.

They are very well paid and talented folks in general, and should land on their feet w/o serious problems in broadcast medium...

I feel bad for college basketball fans. From the outside looking in it appears that ESPN is saying that college basketball is not a top priority to the network going forward. I wonder what the top 5 conferences think of all these college b-ball people being fired and what things will look like in the future. The networks like the acc sec b10 and others, should they be concerned ?

Did I hear that Elmore is coming to the Duke network as the color man or just taking over for Bob Harris. :D OFC

The human angle is where people should temper themselves. I think it's fair to extend the benefit of the doubt that a lot of people weren't thinking of it that way.

I think it's petty and vindictive to think this has anything to do w/ coverage of Grayson.

People who are already bent the wrong way need to be straightened out. Sports have always been involved with civil rights movements, religious beliefs, and political statements: Jackie Robinson, Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown, Kareem, Bill Russell, Tommie Smith and John Carlos, Pat Tillman, Hank Greenberg, Albert Pujols, Tim Tebow, Muhmoud Abdul-Rauf, Venus and Serena Williams, Martina Navratilova, Heather Mercer, Lebron, Melo, CP3, Wade, the St Louis Rams, the Phoenix Suns, NYPD hats after 9/11, Kaepernick, Charley Scott, Doug Williams, Michael Sam, Caitlyn Jenner, Arthur Ashe, Roberto Clemente, and on and on and on and on and on...

Thats a really nice sermon and I agree w/much of what you denoted and their individual causes. Howver we're talking about a network that's really hacked a lot of folks off over the past year (notably Duke fans), and it doesnt play on my heart strings to see them knocked down a notch....

Btw I have much MUCH more respect for Bill Russell than LeBron James. Russell would never take a nite off for "rest."

Meh. You do you. You're free to hold it against people who've personally offended your fandom, and I'm free to agree w/ someone else that it can go too far.

Hopefully there's nobody here that's actually rooting for Bilas to get let go. He's one of ours and regardless of what some may think on here, he's one of the best in the business. Just because he doesn't comment with Duke colored glasses on doesn't mean he's not great at what he does.

While I don't wish for Bilas to lose his job, I'll just have to agree to disagree about him being great at what he does. You may think he is great. I think he stinks.

He's one of ours, but I couldn't have cared less if he had been let go....He goes over the top in his anti-Duke commentary. He is the ultimate "company man" to network pres (and UNC alum) John Skipper, with his obsession of anti- NCAA stance vs UNC over the scandal issue....His job is quite secure...

I doubt anyone (or at least very few) posters here want a "homer," so give me Grant Hill or G-man anyday on the mike over Bilas. Both conduct themselves w/o a trace of partiality toward Duke...

I really appreciate Jay's play on the court AND true student-athlete role model ways during his career at Duke.

Count me in the group who thinks Bilas is the best at what he does. He praises Duke far more than he goes against them. Him being against the NCAA is nothing new....he's always done that. I do disagree with him sometimes, but that doesn't mean I think he's bad at what he does. Coach K holds him in very, very high regard.

That's because Coach K understands what Jay is doing. After Coach K retires it's a possibility he becomes a commentator for college basketball. I don't want to start a debate here on what his plans are but just say he does and is on the broadcasting team doing a Duke game or two and he is just brutally honest about what he thinks is going on and makes comments like Jay does. Are we gonna blow up this board about how Coach K is going out of his way to be critical of the way Duke is playing and make a comment about how unc is getting the ball down the court with their transition offense and how they are getting so many offensive rebounds and lay ups or do we want him to say how bad the officiating is going against Duke and that's because everyone hates Duke and has it in for them. What would you as a Duke fan want to hear from him. OFC

I have to disagree with you Sky and Dukejay. Yes Bilas is smart and yes he knows his stuff, but the problem is he knows it. I don't mind him complimenting another team, but it sure seems like he works harder to not show he went to Duke and that he's 'fair'. No one is denying his intelligence at all

Sky since you asked the question I would much more want our coach to be his humble self and act w/the same decorum of one of his most prized pupils, Grant Hill.

I am sorry Bilas is just far too condescending for my tastes, and I cant ever see K acting that way. I have seen K do color work during March Madness of the past and he was very humble and just himself....

I just think we get a little carried away about Jay Bilas on here. We should have more interesting things to discuss about Duke other than how we think Jay is going out of his way as to not show any favoritism at all toward Duke. It's the off season and we are still ragging on him. Hart you are a good friend of mine but just what is Jay supposed to do. OFC

Be more like Grant Hill and G-Man IMO Sky....We are good buddies, but I just have to agree w/Mac and QC on this Sky. Sky I know you remember Bill Brill. (Former sportswriter and Duke grad). Always agreed w/him Jay WENT TOO FAR the other way to show people he was not biased toward Duke.We are friends no matter what my good man!

Agree. What some might interpret as arrogance I see as conviction. I don't always agree w/ him, either, but he has incredible integrity that earns him a pass in my book as far as any demeanor that could rub me the wrong way otherwise. What would have happened to his (ultimately correct) voice during the lax injustice if he'd been soft-spoken instead of adamant?

I don't think these layoffs will make a dent in ESPN's problems. Their political leanings haven't helped, but cord cutting, and overpaying for the rights to broadcast games are what is killing them. Cable subscribers peaked a few years ago, and revenue has no where to go but down. The contracts they signed with the NFL, NBA, etc., were based on ever increasing subscriber revenue, but that business model is now obsolete.

It's not surprising that ESPN has negatively covered Grayson Allen to death, while simultaneously avoiding talking about the biggest academic scandal in history – UNCheat. Lo and behold, the president of ESPN is John Skipper, a UNCheat grad.

I agree with this. I will say that I tune into sports (Duke basketball in particular) to get away from politics though. It would just be nice if I could watch ESPN or listen to them on the radio without being preached to about whatever flavor of the month social issue they are pushing. They inevitably alienate half the country who disagree with their leftward leanings. Linda Cohn is right on:

I am in no way defending Jerry Sandusky. He is a worthless human. My point is espn went after Paterno and football and made it their life mission. Not a peep when Bernie Fine the Syracuse assistant was accused of similar crimes. 3/4 of ESPN went to Syracuse. I enjoy every second of the cuts.

ESPN manufactures crap to provide content for their blowhards to talk about all day
