My wife and I are old, long time Kentuckians. I was born and raised in Hardin County, raised my kids in Jefferson County, and now am back in the country in Daviess County not too far from Owensboro. We are trying to travel to every county in the state in our elder years, and plan on hitting some this weekend. I would appreciate input on the best places to eat/visit in each county. I'm going to try to hit 5-7 counties each weekend this summer. Thanks for the input.

If you are going to western Ky

Marshall County - Drive in Cheeseburgers

It’s weird but this place takes lunch orders some days, and have people come for the burgers and not stay for the movies.

LBL - Knoth’s BBQ. Patti’s if opened back up, but I’m not sure they are yet.

Paducah - The Freight House

You can stay at Kentucky Lake and get a cabin. All of these places are close enough that you can catch plenty of time on the lake and enjoy the rest for an easy 3-4 day trip and wrap that area up quick and easy.

I plan on taking care of the purchase area on Labor Day weekend, including LBL and the lake. Thanks for the information.

Middlesboro, (Bell Co.) KY: Conley's on Cumberland Ave and 17th. A local icon. The foot-long dog with slaw is highly recommended. Visit historic Cumberland Gap National Park while there.

Pineville, (Bell Co.) KY: Engel's. Similar to Conley's. Good burgers.

Barbourville, (Knox Co.), KY: Hamburger Hut produces some awesome burgers. Oven Mitt offers outstanding homemade Kentucky grub.

Corbin-Whitley County: If looking for Great Meal try "Seasons" or want farm to table try "The Wrigley". If want try a local hotspot for a Chilli Dog go to "The Root Beer Stand".

If you get to central Kentucky, I recommend visiting the reconstructed Fort Boonesboro in Madison County to get a sense of what our pioneers endured during the 1770’s. https://parks.ky.gov/parks/recreationparks/fort-boonesborough/

Afterwards you might enjoy a meal at “Halls on The River” http://www.hallsontheriver.com/halls-on-the-river-restaurant/

If you are into crafts, many people enjoy Berea, KY in southern Madison County. I recommend visiting Tater Knob Pottery located in the hills of Madison County. http://taterknob.com/

If you're in Ballard Co, Betty's in Barlow and Bluegrass Family Restaurant in La Center are worth stopping for. Betty's had some really good fried chicken on Wednesday. Haven't been to either in a few years, but I used to stop at them on my way to and from Cape Girardeau for product trials at a customer facility. On a side note, if you're even in or near Cape, I highly recommend Broussard's for Cajun cuisine.

Freight House is overrated. Kirchoffs, Doe's, Max's. Red's Donuts. Just Hamburgers. National Quilt Museum.

Graves County? Hmm.... Do an event and visit the Fancy Farm Picnic.

KY has about 70 too many counties. Some way too short of people & assets to give kids a decent education. That said, government/education is the #1 employer in some.

Need about 50-60.

They made rules in late 1800's that proposed new counties had to be 400 square miles, and new county seat had to be ten miles away from current one.

If I were King of Kentucky for a week, it would be done

I agree
Give some examples of counties that you would combine.
McLean....north of Green...Daviess, south of Green.Muhlenberg or McLean call it either. Fulton Carlisle Hickman..... Combine Ballard with McCracken.... Combine Marshall with Calloway...... Hancock back to Ohio.....
I get really busy when I get East of Elizabethtown. Pike and Pulaski would be the only two counties not touched.

Mcreary County - Blue Heron Mining Community
Oldham County - Downtown LaGrange
Nelson County - Maker's Mark Distillery
Laurel County - First KFC
Clay County - Pat's Pool Hall for a great burger
Bullitt County - Heritage Hills for a round of golf

Those are off the top of my head. Some counties will be tough, like Henry County, there ain't nothing out there.

This isn't for the OP but for anyone else that happens to be reading. I was born and raised in Owensboro. Best time to go is during ROMP because it's a great music festival. Lots of fun. Whilst Old Hickory BBQ is great, everyone will recommend that. I say get breakfast at Delores's and go check out Famous Bistro for dinner. Best pizza is at Fetta and the best burgoo is whatever church is having a picnic while you're there.
