of its $20.5 million revenue-sharing budget to men's basketball for 2025-26. So, $9.225 million. Over three times what most SEC schools will do. If true, that's a bold move.
It's like calling Ohio State a football school. Of course they're not horrible in other sports but to most people know that school makes money for being good in football. Cal said some stupid things but i get the sentiment behind that oneBasketball school. Cal was right about that. Even though I see why people say he shouldn't have said it, it wasn't as big a deal as people made it out to be.
As it should be! Once we get a new coach, I’m sure that’ll be adjusted somewhat, but make no mistake, this is a basketball school!
Probably. We can’t fire him, it’s worse than Cal. He would be owed the rest of his contract within like 3 months or something like that.Yeah, wouldn't be surprised if this is a ploy to get Stoops to leave. The boosters supposedly withheld NIL from Cal and then opened it up for Pope.
Anything is possible.
Why can’t we fire him?Probably. We can’t fire him, it’s worse than Cal. He would be owed the rest of his contract within like 3 months or something like that.
UK clearly didn’t have/want to pay the 32 million to Cal and that was under the impression it could be negotiated down and over many years, then what would make you think they would be willing to pay 40 million to Stoops with 3 months of his firing. It’s not that they can’t do it, it’s that the financial side would be suicidal. Why can’t we fire him?
There’s nothing to keep UK from firing any coach if they want a coach gone, they are gone.
It was just an internet myth that UK would have problems firing Cal. The truth was no one that could have any effect on firing Cal wanted Cal fired.
No one in administration. No boosters. Not even one discussion ever about firing Cal.
Only on the internet was the story different.
Had UK wanted Cal gone the buyout was not an issue. Only on the internet was it an issue. If UK wants Stoops gone, he's gone. There's no hand wringing over the buyouts.UK clearly didn’t have/want to pay the 32 million to Cal and that was under the impression it could be negotiated down and over many years, then what would make you think they would be willing to pay 40 million to Stoops with 3 months of his firing. No one was under the impression that Cal's buyout could be negotiated down because it was never discussed. Barney wasn't going to fire Cal. Never discussed firing Cal with anyone. No boosters went to Barney with a request to fire Cal. It's also a myth that the boosters turned on Cal. The opposite is true for a couple of large boosters. They have lowered their give now. Not a single one major booster is giving more now.
The talk you hear about that stuff is just that, talk!
People who do this for a job and have information way before you will ever know anything say the exact opposite. Mitch and Cal didn’t sit down and say they were committed to working together because everything was fine and dandy with happy boosters and fans. And to say that 70 million is a non issue might be the dumbest statement you can make with money that isn’t yours and would have to come from boosters. No one, no matter how rich you are is writing checks like that often, especially to get rid of a coach and turn around and have to fund the next one.Had UK wanted Cal gone the buyout was not an issue. Well said brother.Every dollar tossed on the bonfire of Mark Stoops' football program is a puff of smoke and a pile of ash.
That’s greatly exaggerated fantasy.
In fact the ON3 article itself, linked inside the MTT tweet you posted, now has an update where Matt Jones is saying he’s being told that 45% number is greatly exaggerated and false.
When $9 million is a greatly exaggerated number, it’s obvious the $20 million number that people absolutely refuse to stop quoting is an insanely crack-smoking total fantasy.
It’s a highly insulting fantasy, too. Because your head coach and his assistants worked their asses off to sign a transfer and recruiting class that looks like it cost $20 million dollars. But they managed that incredible feat by spending an actual total amount probably a lot closer to $3 or $4 million dollars. That’s a herculean accomplishment and it sure would be nice to see them start getting some credit for it.
$9 million out of a $20 million cap doesn't mean that $20 million during an uncapped period is fantasy. The cap is designed to reduce the precap spending. That’s greatly exaggerated fantasy.

If 45% from $20 million is fantasy then $20 million ad hoc is also fantasy. You are welcome to believe the coaching staff accepted an 80% year-over-year pay cut without a whisper about it from either them or anyone with access to the information.$9 million out of a $20 million cap doesn't mean that $20 million during an uncapped period is fantasy.
