It’s beyond Laettner now. It’s multiple things like recruiting, 2 titles to 1 in the Cal era and a 34 point hammering in November.
I'll show you mine if you show me yours
Was born 8 months after the shot. In my lifetime, Duke and Kentucky really haven't been rivals, so the only thing that really bothers me that you listed is how bad y'all smacked us in November. I love how our team is playing now, though. I would say after Duke, Kentucky is right there in the mix for odds to win the whole thing. It’s beyond Laettner now. Without reading through this whole thread, have some of you interacted with UK fans outside of reading Rupp Rafters? Because I can assure you, that is the crazy of crazy for Kentucky fans. Most of us just enjoy good basketball paired with even better bourbon.
I'm a relatively younger guy, born in 92. I really have nothing against Duke. No issues with admitting they've been the best program of the last 25 or 30 years, either. I hate Louisville much more than Duke. Bunch of cheaters![]()

I think if you don't dive for balls you have no heart
I would like to think that if someone slashed your tires, they are in the very, very small minority of people who take sports just way too seriously. But I'm sorry that that happened to you.You might mean everything you say, but try an experiment. Put on a Duke shirt and go to BW3's, Walmart , Kroger , and a gas station. Come back and let me know how many comments you got.
Yes, I have interacted with a lot of UK fans outside of the board. I have some really good friends who are uk fans. But if I leave the house with a Duke shirt on, I know comments are coming . Same for my wife. And if you didn't see it, I posted about a lady friend of mine who had a Duke license plate and went to the mall in Lexington. When she got back to her car, all 4 tires are slashed and a note on the car saying she should know better
Hey boo, trying to replace you with a better looking Duke fan over hereOh **** me, who invited the UK fan?!
Oh. Me. My bad.
#realtalk, Jimbo is one of the good ones.
You're just kissing ***. This guy trashes Duke any chance he gets on the college basketball board.I would like to think that if someone slashed your tires, they are in the very, very small minority of people who take sports just way too seriously. But I'm sorry that that happened to you.
Living in Louisville as a UK fan, I deal with rival fans every day. Nothing ever more than some ribbing and fun in nature back in forth. I think anything past that and people are probably taking their fan hood a little too far.
I actually have a couple Duke friends here and town and a few that I talk with regularly on the main board. No issues with them whatsoever. I promise not all UK fans despise Duke. Some of us put all our hatred towards Louisville![]()
You mad cause I've moved on to better Duke fans?? Take your jealousy elsewhere, sirYou're just kissing ***. This guy trashes Duke any chance he gets on the college basketball board.
We want Bert, we want Bert! You mad cause I've moved on to better Duke fans?? Take your jealousy elsewhere, sir
I already told you, boy. You belong to me. If you are talking to someone else, it is because I let you. Now hold my pocket. You mad cause I've moved on to better Duke fans?? Take your jealousy elsewhere, sir
Dude would be banned after 3 postsWe want Bert, we want Bert!
I am shocked he hasn't chimed in on the Corey Maggette situation.Dude would be banned after 3 posts
I think everyone here knows that RR is not a perfect representation of KY fans as a whole. It’s definitely not a good look for KY fans.Without reading through this whole thread, have some of you interacted with UK fans outside of reading Rupp Rafters? Fair enough, friend. Hope its okay if I drop in from time to time and talk hoops with some of you. I spend most of my time on the national board. Some time of RR, but not a whole lot. I think its more interesting to talk with opposing fans. I get to talk to UK fans in real life on a regular basis.I think everyone here knows that RR is not a perfect representation of KY fans as a whole. It’s definitely not a good look for KY fans.
I rip on KY fans a lot, but I don’t actually think they’re all a bunch of toothless hillbillies that married their sister. I know most are just normal fans cheering on their team and I could probably sit down with them have a beer and a cordial conversation about basketball.
What I think gets a lot of us bashing KY more is when we read things on RR that call K satan, wishing death on Duke players and coaches, etc. Thats taking it too far. I’ve never read stuff like that about KY players and coaches on DI. I know it’s a slim minority of KY fans posting that stuff, but they don’t get called out by the normal fans that often. If a Duke fan posted something like that on DI about KY, UNC or whoever, they’d be called out and banned.
Just my two cents.
When I wear Duke gear in KY, I very regularly get comments from people - often strangers; but generally it's all in good fun and I take it in stride as it's typically not hateful or over-the-top. However, I have definitely had some hateful things said to me. One particular time that comes to mind is when I was taking an undergrad class (to add to the guys comment, the class was about the Apostle Paul) and this elderly gentleman that I had never spoken to before looked at my shirt and, completely deadpan, said "You oughta be shot for wearing that."
I don't actually know if anyone would vandalize my car if I had any Duke memorabilia on it, but I definitely wouldn't risk it.
Aw shucks, you got me.You and I both know who you are coming home to tonight.
Shut your ***** mouth.
Haha I've never even thought about the restaurant thing. I could see that being necessary in Lexington, perhaps. I always lived in/around Bowling Green.I won't go to a restaurant with Duke gear on unless I cover it up until my food comes!
Don't get me wrong, there are some good people here. I have some really close friends here who are uk fans, but in general, the elitism is real
Haha I've never even thought about the restaurant thing. I could see that being necessary in Lexington, perhaps. I always lived in/around Bowling Green.
I would and go back and tell VA fans .....if it was you.No way I let them seem my shirt while they prepare my food!!! I don't think everyone would, but I have no doubt there are some haters who would do something so they can run tell their friends what they did to the Duke fan!!!
You started at the moment that will drive their anger forever. That 92 game is widely considered to be the best NCAAT game (and, by extension, the best OVERALL college hoops game) ever played.
.
And that was a dream team for a fanbase like UK. Some local kids. Gritty white kids up and down the roster. Kids that stuck out an NCAA sanctions that crippled their program. Beating the defending title team in Duke would have turned that team, the UK fanbase's favorite roster ever, into immortal legends. It would have been one of the bigger Elite 8 upsets ever. 15 over 2, or even a 16 over 1, are bigger upsets, but Duke had been 1 wire to wire that year. We were the first big media circus in college sports. Duke losing to that UK team would have been a huge shocker. And they thought they had it won.
.
Instead……..
.
They turned into a highlight of the season that turned Duke into what is now the nation's preeminent college hoops team. A repeat season. That was when K began to seriously challenge for GOAT of coaches. That game was when Duke began to surpass UK, and it was in the most notorious manner that it could possibly have happened.
.
And it is on TV every March. They are never allowed to forget it.
Tl;Dr: The success of KY basketball is tied to their identity as a people; to steal the limelight, to out-success them, is to threaten their identity.
Like a couple others on this board, I'm from KY (but don't currently live there, however). Without poking any fun, even though some of this may sound harsh, this is the actual reality behind their obsession as I see it. This will probably be long.
Kentucky isn't just obsessed with Duke; they don't just hate Duke. They hate Louisville (local rival so this is understandable to a degree - more on that later), they hate Kansas, they hate UNC, they hate... see a theme here? Hardcore UK fans hate any program that consistently wins and the media spends anytime doting over in place of themselves. There are lots of facets to this and there are trends amongst demographics and their fandom.
As probably everyone knows, the vast majority of Kentucky is rural. You have Louisville and Lexington which are larger cities (particularly Lville), a couple cities the size of Bowling Green (home of WKU) with ~60,000 people, and then the rest of the entire state is nowhere close to that. All that to say, KY is very rural, which means that there is not much to do for entertainment and not much in terms of higher education, which means less opportunity in terms of basically anything.
Most (not all) of your Rupp Rafters/Cats Illustrated, hardcore-hate-everyone-else Kentucky fans are low-income, rural residents. They love UK basketball, their dad did, their dad's dad did, so on and so on. Hating the success of other teams -particularly Lville and Duke - is a cultural construct that partly defines what it means to be a Kentuckian; it's an identity marker. You're not just a Kentucky fan, you're also a Duke/Lville hater. They're not really separable as being a true KY fan means you hate those other two teams. For many of these types of fans, the obsession for UK basketball stems from both generational indoctrination and simply the fact that there is little to nothing else to look to both in terms of entertainment as well as something to place your pride in. There are no pro-teams of any kind to cheer for, and outside Louisville (and arguably Lexington), there aren't really any other kind of major attractions to distract you from being preoccupied with KY basketball. They're not "busy" with anything else in terms of entertainment.
For many of these rural hardcore UK fans, they have little to own and they have little to place their pride in. The mindset many have is, "We may not have much/may not be known for much, but dangit, we OWN basketball." Kentucky basketball is a part of their identity. Ask these types of UK fans what else they do for fun besides watch UK basketball and you'd be hard pressed to have anyone say anything besides, perhaps, hunting and fishing; because, for most, there just really isn't anything else. And again, for these rural hardcore fans, they spend all day everyday working, farming, etc. and so the big game on Saturday is *the* thing they look forward to that gets them to the end of the week.
When you're talking about middle-income people, in my experience, they're far less rabid of fans. Sure they're crazy about UK basketball and they still hate Duke and Lville, but they're far more tolerant and far more likely to joke around and take things more lightly. Of all my friends that are college basketball fans, all are UK fans and we're always ribbing one another and having a good time with it. They still want Duke to lose every game, but they don't want Duke basketball to simply not exist anymore.
That is all about fans outside of Louisville.
No surprise here, but most Louisville fans live in or are from Louisville with the rest of the state predominantly being UK fans. This is, of course, not true for all UK fans throughout the state, but there is certainly a racial/cultural element at work here in regards to the hatred for Louisville. Most of your low-income, very rural UK fans were brought up with the stereotypes typically characteristic with low-income, poorly educated, rural white people. Most Louisville fans are African-American. Most Louisville fans that are white are typically looked at as "thuggish" or "kinda rough". You won't really find a rural, "good-ol-boy" Louisville fan. You don't find too many African-Americans in KY that are KY fans. Obviously I'm speaking in generalities.
I think the racial element pairs with jealousy in their hatred for Duke. Many of those lower-income, rural, diehard UK fans dislike Louisville and Louisville fans "because they're all thugs" (and we all can read between the lines when that's said), and they partly hate Duke because Duke has a rep (as unfair as it may be) for being predominantly white and wildly successful. "If Duke is winning like that with 'all those white boys' then why can't we at the same rate? Why didn't those players come here, anyway? F*** Duke."
Again, middle-income fans generally have a different mindset here as well (though the Louisville/Louisville fan stereotype definitely transcends class throughout the state, imo). Their hatred for Duke is largely all in good rivalry fun in my experience. They hate Duke because Duke is a wildly successful program, K has been around a million years it seems, etc.

Who else hates UNC and KY just because of their fans? Lol
Yea hate is a strong word but whatever the word is that’s closest to hate pencil me in! I can stand them. All of them I’ve ever met! Luckily I have no family that’s a fan of either or I wouldn’t be able to stand them either. I got a couple friends that are turdhole fans...I can’t stand them either! Lmao. UNC fans are just a different breed. You can pick them out of a lineup by listening to them ignorant basterds for 5 secounds. (Non basketball related)I don't hate anyone but I have a lot of desdain for them both. Is that the right word? Problem is I by living in tar heel county N.C. I do have family and friends whom I love and care for so I have to be careful. But as for the trolls that seem to wander over here from time to time I have no use for. OFC
Who else hates UNC and KY just because of their fans? Lol
I wouldn’t say I hate them except for the ones that wish death, injury, or misfortune on our players or any opposing player for that matter. Those people take sports way too seriously and should probably see a Dr. and be on medication or some kind of government list.
The ones that are jackasses but don’t rise to the level mentioned above, I just ignore or troll.
The ones that are ok with back and forth playful banter that has no actual ill intent are the ones that should be allowed to post on message boards. These are the kind of rival fans I like posting here and interacting with.
I really hope uk is in our bracket. Not worried about them AT ALL.I’m obviously banned over there. But, when I log out and peruse the aisles, I’ve found you to be one of the level-headed ones. I was also happy to see most of your posters eviscerating the guy who wished for a Duke player to get injured. You guys are playing great now. Honestly... aside from a FF or NC game, I want no part of Kentucky. The chip on your shoulder would weigh more than a cord from Henderson, KY.
I really hope uk is in our bracket. Not worried about them AT ALL.
I really hope uk is in our bracket. Not worried about them AT ALL.
I wasn’t being cocky. I just don’t think they match up with us. I realize we wouldn’t beat them by 34 again, but I’m confident in a double digit win.Sometimes, it’s best to be careful what you wish for. Take the incredible win. It was awesome. But, know that in-season rematches often favor the team who lost the first match. I’m not scared of them. But, outside of the two games I mentioned, I want no part of them. That said... I’m quite confident. Just not cocky to the point of being unreasonable.
