All Virginia had to do was foul before State shot a miracle 3 pointer, and NC State's season would have ended early in the ACC tournament.

For like 3 weeks out of 8 total seasons, Kevin Keatts actually was "a winner" as the NC State media blitz told us when he was hired. He just gave the ball to DJ Burns and let him cook.
It's weird, coming off of Ricks staffs at Loserville and what he did at Wilmington...I thought he would do well at NC State. He didn't. At all. And looked pretty lazy at the end. I'm not exactly in the camp that believes failed head coaches make great assistants. I'd rather take fliers on young/hungry dudes at smaller places. Meaning, I'd rather catch them on the way up than on the way down. None of it matters if Pope doesn't delegate and turn loose of the ropes a bit. He could hire the ghosts of RMK to teach offense, John Chaney to teach defense, and Wooden (Sam Gilbert NIL fund) to recruit and it wouldn't matter because he's getting in the way of everything.

Some coaches are great assistants but not as head coaches

He made a final four 2 years ago...as a HEAD coach.
I'm as critical of Pope as anybody but Keatts would be a slam dunk hire as an assistant coach for any program, imo.
Apparently Alvin Brooks was also a slum dunk hire as we took him away from Baylor. He stole recruits from Cal to Baylor which is impressive. So one thing to consider is that Brookes should have been a good assistant/recruiter, he was at Baylor and became non existent at Kentucky. Again this is on Pope/JMI. So until I see any actual changes, I am not as excited about anyone yet. Why? Because consistency of two years tells the story, not the what if.

Yeah I think they were both good hires. Just like I think we've had some very good players these past 2 years. Pope is the ringmaster, it is up to him to make these pieces fit, and so far he has failed to do so.

Great hire - He is very impressIve as analyst on ESPN - ACC network.
Great recruiter & working class roots.
Former star HS Quarterback as well as Basketball in Va,
With as many D1 wins as Pope.
Hire him before Tennessee does.

Completely agree. I have zero clue about Keatts as an assistant. He was a complete unknown before joining Pitinos staff. Was only there for three or four years and then took the Wilmington job. It honestly seems like another reach, but who really knows. Again, I just prefer to get guys on the way up and not on the way down. But, and this is super important, every single staff needs that knowledgeable old dude on staff. Think Robic or Ernie Nestor, guys like that. They're extremely valuable. I have no clue if that is Keatts or not. It sure as hell wasn't Mark Fox, but we knew that ahead of time.

60-62 record first 4 years and was nearly canned.
Sooooo, again, not a retread? If Rhode Island were close to firing him that's the first I've ever heard of it. I'd love for you to share anything you've got that would back that up. Admittedly, I'm not the biggest Rhode Island basketball follower. But again, not a retread. Just as long as we're concerned about accuracy.

22-39 record his first 2 years at Rhode Island had some in the fanbase questioning his coaching abilities.

Underwhelmed he ll be in Lex 1 year the rate pope is going in the reg season. I mean popes coaching like this is year one and he’s building a program. I don’t think he got the memo that he has one more year. I honestly believe he thinks he’s at Kentucky for five years until his contract contracts up. scratch that he’s got four more years on this contract. So Pope’s operating under the notion he has four years and every time he hits a sweet 16 I’ll have another year he’s he thinks he’s building a program. He should’ve built a program taking his lumps his first year you don’t do it in year three year three is a major evaluation year. I mean, I would argue that Pope didn’t make it two year three he should be out on his butt. UNC is going to show UK how it’s done.

I’m telling you guys the guys the people that have been able to resuscitate our program they’re gone we’ve lost them. We’ve lost a lot of people during Barney’s 25 years quarter century. But we need to find new people who know the Kentucky standard people that are competent and we need a superstar involved. I mean, if Kentucky is this behemoth historically we should have superstars man we should have people it’s hard to say no to.. people who know how to sell
We don't know that he won't be here 5 years
What do you want him to do differently than he's doing. Changed all of his ac and going hard for #1 player in country. Not a lot more he could do

Going for 9 you'd be underwhelmed with anything you complain just to complain. We haven't started next season, portal hasn't opened. We aren't firing the coach, if he turns it around who knows.
Some of these folks wouldn't be impressed if Rick Majerus crawled out of his grave and appeared in the Cats locker room with his own towel.

I’ll be honest that I don’t know much about him except that he made that miracle Final Four in 2024 then still got fired one year later because his next team was so bad, so I don’t immediately have a strong opinion on bringing him on as an assistant.

Does anyone know if he’s known for something in particular that he hangs his hat on as a coach? Recruiting? Defense? Player development?
Defense and recruiting are what he's known for. Very aggressive defense, and when he was at NCST, the program was anywhere from 50s to 200s, rankings-wise... So... Yeah. Not necessarily an ace recruiter, but a good one.

UK could do worse. UK could do better.

Maybe he can replace Mark Fox as the DC?
I'd take the Angry Coach on YouTube over Mark Fox. No joke, Angry Coach knows ball and he's got pazazz.

Yes. Tennessee lost their defensive coaching ace Justin Gainey.
