Kick off return question?

If the ball is kicked into the end zone, does it make sense to return it? It seems to me that taking it at the 25 is a better alternative unless you have a super returner. Most of the returns I have watched either don't make it to the 25, there is a penalty that moves the ball back to before the 25, or it is fumbled. There is also the chance of injuries. Does anyone have any statistics on this matter?
