Maybe. Pickering is 5-6 from 39 and in, but 0-3 from 40 and beyond.
- Freshman Drew Brown in 2014 was 12-14 from 39 and in, but 2-7 from 40 yards and out.
- Freshman Alex Henery in 2007 was 8-8 from 39 and in, but 0-0 from 40 and out.
- Freshman Jordan Congdon in 2005 was 16-20 from 39 and in, and 3-3 from 40 and out.
- Freshman Josh Brown in 1999 was 13-16 from 39 and in, but 1-4 from 40 and out.
- Alex Henery was a freak, but Callahan didn't use him as a freshman in any situation outside 39 yards.
- Sandro DeAngelis didn't ever become our top FG kicker, and he's a CFL legend.
- Congdon was our best freshman kicker in the past 20 years, but he transferred.
- Brett Maher didn't become the top placekicker until AFTER his freshman year.
the hate piled on this kid is dumb. do you guys actually watch college football games other than ours? This is completely standard. He'll get there. Back off.
In short, we have a lot of 18-year olds we're expecting to make clutch plays. That's not a recipe for success. (For accuracy's sake, Pickering turned 19 a month ago. Adrian Martinez will be 19 on Jan. 7.)
I’m sure he will pull it together and his distance will improve as he gets stronger, but I wish we could get back to the point where we develop great kickers, long snappers and punters from walk-on’s.

In a perfect world I would bring in a freshman when your veteran is a junior unless you get a whizbanger when a sophomore and redshirt especially with the new rules. Not sure how many to have on the roster because they do get hurt. Probably minimum of 5 P/K. Not all of them on scholarship.
Good lord. Our fan base makes me shake my head at times.
