Kickers are lacking power

Archies punt don't appear to have any carry to them. N. Dakotas punter did a better job yesterday. Punting is a weapon and Archie had his best game last year vs Cincinnati and has not had a good game since.

Cunanon has shown he can't hit a far kick. Kicking is your only job and high school kids are making 50 yarders these days.

Our kicking and penalties on special teams are going to cost us a game or 2 this season if we don't make some changes.

Well when you let go an experienced ST coach and fail to replace him this is the result you get.
If Ek wasn’t our ST coach last year Archie wouldn’t even be here. We had a transfer punter already on campus but Ek wanted a rugby style and got Archie . Maher coached the place kickers last year Cunanons range is 50 unless a wind behind him . Hohl gas got a bigger leg but bit as accurate. If they need to try one from 50 plus let Hohl try it .

Yes it's aggravating to see other teams with much better specialists than we have when we used to have some of the best and they were reliable. Tristan Alvano was nailing 50+ yarders in high school but failed here

Cunanan is a senior and he was brought in because we couldn’t make an extra point or short kick. Hohl is a senior too. I expect us to either go hard after a stud recruit or portal kicker this off season.

Maybe. Clemson hired Rich Bisacci after Ek left. You know, the guy with Nebraska ties who took the Raiders to the playoffs after Gruden was fired. 😕. We promoted an NU alum. Maher may end up being fine. His first assistant has a lot of experience.
One issue I see immediately is that Maher is running Ekeler’s scheme. I believe we are going to find out the missing ingredient to running it is Ekeler himself.

That said I don’t know why Maher couldn’t be kept on as a specialized coach for place kicking and kickoffs. There’s no reason to be out coached when there’s no limit to assistants nowadays.

Except that prior to coming to NU Maher had little to no experience as a coach. Maher is a bright guy. He’ll probably figure it out. It isn’t rocket science.

Did you happen to catch usc special teams yesterday? The fake punt Rutgers pulled off. Ekler is good but he not as good as his big ego
Ek is a good ST guy and I wish he would have swallowed his pride and stayed and not wanted a LB coach position. I think since there was such a dramatic change between Foley and him it look like he was a God . It was more Foley being terrible.

I respectfully disagree. There are thousands of coaches with a wide variety of abilities. If they were all the same and it was easy, guys wouldn’t be making millions doing it. Just because someone may have been an excellent player- it doesn’t mean they are going to be a great coach. Many have no clue how to effectively and efficiently teach, manage and motivate. Harder than it looks

I think Nick Humphrey who EK brought from Tenn is actually the one scheming things . I think Maher is in charge of FG kickers like last year. Maher is the one that decides if we are running a fake here or not or going for a block or not .

You don't have to be competent to be a power 4 coach. Football isn't physics or advanced mathematics. There is no relationship between competency and pay...if there was a surgeon who saves lives every day would make 10 million and Rhule would would make 200k...NU football coaches get paid so much because the sport was built over decades into a financial monster, the pay has nothing to do with Matt Rhule and his skills...you could plug in a high school coach...Rhule attempted to, and he was a drunk or else I'm sure he'd still be here.

I agree that being a good player doesn’t mean you can coach it. Our special teams haven’t been as bad as some would make them out to be this year though. Frankly I don’t see much if any change from last year.

I think Wilson is executing the plan chosen by his coaches. Punting today is more complicated than just kicking the ball as far as you can.
Of course he is following the plan of the coaches. But the coaches chose him as a rugby style punter to fulfill that plan. And it isn’t working. I listened to the game on Husker radio and even our announcers were complaining about our punting. So it isn’t just a few grumbles on here. We also can’t seem to kick +50 field goals. One of our kickoffs went out of bounds. We had another holding penalty that negated a great punt return, and all of our punts are in the 38-39 yard range.
Our special teams need work.

I’ll be honest - I like Archie because Ek liked him and I trust whatever Ek says related to ST.

Which is a problem. At some point trust what you see on the field. End of the day players have to make the plays. I actually wanted to keep Ek as well because imo he's clearly a better coach than Maher. But i can only credit or blame the kid based on what he does. Especially when it's a punter/kicker. The ball is the same size and the goal post haven't changed.

I don't care what Alvano does somewhere else. He was trash here. Archie thus far has only had one or two "good" games at Nebraska. Hard for me to "trust Ek" when I SEE Archie lol.

All good points. I guess I’ll take the guy who is consistently accurate from inside 50 over the guy with the big leg who can’t consistently make the gimmes. I’m not sure if Cunanan has a year left or not but clearly we need to recruit a guy who can be consistent AND make 55 yarders. We had a great special teams coach in 90s and the last I knew he was a small college administrator in Missouri. Downing was great with kickers.

Absolutely should be . Who cares what previous coach thought he's either doing a good job or he's not.

I’m guessing Archie is the best we have. Again, I would wager they’re preaching consistent hits and direction versus distance. He’s still very young.

Part of this is scheme. Kicking on the run to where they aren’t. Also helps lessen the chance of a blocked kick and required the opponent to honor a running fake. At the end of the day- net punting is the metric, no long returns and some fair number of downings inside the 20. Room for improvement on special teams needed - yep.

Better said than my feeble analysis. Direction and limiting big returns. 👍

That's very possible. In which case not much you can do. Other than getting a guy last off-season in the portal not much can be done now.

I'm talking 50+ for Hohl. If Kunanan is more accurate inside that and I'm sure he is roll with him. But when 50+ shows up in going with the guy who are least has a 50+ leg. Wasn't Kunanan short on both 54 yarders? There is no need to trot him out there again for those. To miss it is one thing. Coming up short is an entirely different thing.

Kamdyn Koch was the fifth rated punter in the 2024 class, first team punter in state of Maryland, learned from a pro bowl punter. He was recruited by Foley and Rhule, I think he got passed over by Ekeler and Humphrey, I would hope a third year punter could give Archie better competition. Archie is 83rd in net punting after being 130th last year, yeah you might not allow returns but he's never going to flip the field either.

Cunanan I think is 14/14 from inside 35 since he got here. Seems like he missed an extra point on a bungled hold. 3/8 I thought I heard today beyond 35 or 40? Don’t forget how we struggled to make extra points and chip shots when Rhule got here.

He wasn’t highly recruited and doesn’t have his dad’s leg. I have zero doubt that IF he was better than Archie, he would be punting.

Penn State, Wake Forest and Kansas State were interested in him but he committed to us before taking any other visit.
