I remember when Dale Earnhardt Sr. died and a big impact that had on the racing world. Kobe's death reaches out to much more masses than Earnhardt with all due respect to Dale. Kobe also is one of the few pepple who by hearing his 1st name only everyone knew who you were speaking of. Elvis and Tiger all others. Even when you say "Michael" or "MJ" you could be talking about Michael Jordan or Jackson. OFC

You are correct about him maybe not having the impact because of sport popularity. But Dale died at the biggest event of his sport while blocking for his son and Michael Waltrip. His death led to people no longer following the sport including me. This is a tragic event indeed but I will not let it go unanswered when another athletes death is down played when it had the same impact on many people as this one.

Anytime we loose those we think are 10 feet tall and bullet proof, it's shocking.

Kyrie sitting out tonight’s game because of Kobe. All games should be cancelled today in my opinion.

Tatum was also close with Kobe. He was questionable for tonight’s game.

I'm just heart broken, especially after hearing his daughter was on there too. Words cant say how sad this is. Praying for that poor wife/mother. Cant imagine her grief. Shows how short and precious life is and death is coming for us all now matter what our stature in life is.

I mean this in the most respectful way possible but that’s absurd. Kobe wouldn’t want any basketball to stop due to his passing. It’s really dumb that Kyrie is doing that too. Life goes on and I’m sure there are lots of people who bought tickets to that game to see him play. He should play in his honor.

Terrible tragedy. Much worse with his daughter.
Fantastic that he coached his daughter's team and was so proud of her. Gotta try to hang your hat on that, to some degree or another.
As for Kyrie, no right or wrong way. Each person has to do what is right for them. All we can ask for there is sincere motives/intentions.

I'm not a NBA fan, so I don't know a lot about Kobe, but this is tragic. You never know when your number will be called. Kobe's family is going to need all the love and support they can get in the days ahead. God's speed to his wife and girls. I don't really know what else to say.

They just showed part of a press conference on ESPN and based on a question by reporters and a sheriffs response it sounds like there were possibly 9 people on the helicopter.

If someone close to me died, I’d probably miss work. Kyrie is a human being. If he misses the next 5 games, then that’s his right.

I mean this in the most respectful way as possible but you don’t get to tell others how to grieve. We all grieve differently. If you would choose the opposite then that’s on you, but don’t judge others who would do the opposite of you.

Man this is rough right here. Can you imagine being there with your daughter (if any have one) and there’s nothing you can do to save her or yourself. They look up to you as a hero and super man. That’s tough. I hope they don’t release any video or audio of this. It’s really sad. But it’s how life goes. Everyone has their time. Some unfortunately come early though

Statement from Coach K:

“We have tragically lost one of the greatest sports figures of our time with the passing of Kobe Bryant. He was an incredibly gifted person who was universally respected. He was in constant pursuit of doing something special and there will never be a greater warrior in our sport. I had the amazing honor of coaching Kobe in the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games, and I will always remember how much he cherished representing his country in a first-class manner playing the game he so loved. The game of basketball is better today because of Kobe, and he deserves eternal appreciation for that. This is a devastating loss, made even more tragic by the passing of his daughter, Gianna, and all others on board. The entire Krzyzewski family is saddened as we genuinely loved and admired Kobe. We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife, Vanessa, their daughters Natalia, Bianka, and Capri, and the families of those involved.”

This one has hit me really hard. I’m still in a state of disbelief.

Late this afternoon my nine-year-old had basketball practice. Your mind can’t help but draw the parallels. Her and I really bonded today. She didn’t know Kobe other than by name....but she’s watched a lot with her dad today and asked a lot of questions. When she went up to shower a half-hour ago she gave me a big hug out of the blue. I needed it.

Kids. Leave it to them.

Absolutely tragic. I always thought he would be like Bill Russell or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, as far as one of those guys who would be around the game forever. He had the level of insight and intellect that those gentleman possess.

And this states what it's all about, and how and why we're all so devastated. Life is so fragile, and in an instant everything can come crumbling down. Everyone enjoy every second, while you still have it, because we not guaranteed anything.

Amen Q, when a loved one dies it’s one of the last tributes a family member, fan or in this case another Pro player can celebrate. You are so right in your assessment and I for 1 appreciate your post.

I found out right before teeing off on our 18th hole. I forgot how to swing a golf club and lost all interest in remembering how. My world shook!

We are only human and it's so hard to be cordial and kind all the time but we must try to be better in the way we spreak to one another even on this board. The last thing you say , text, write on any type of communication may very well indeed the last thing you say to them. It could be a shame if the last thing you said to someone would be the last thing one said.OFC

Man, I'm a wreck right now. I feel like the enormity of everything is just now hitting. Kobe is gone. And his little girl too...I can't even imagine those last moments...And Vanessa's pain right now. As devestating as this is for us as sports fans, it's nothing compared to what a staggering loss this is for that family. Just thinking about it tears me apart. Sorry to word vomit. Just trying to process.

Pretty awesome that someone once asked him if he regretted not having a son and his answer was, I have a daughter to carry on my name.

That was such a great comment, and quintessential Kobe. I have three daughters, and I would be a rich man if I had a nickel for every time someone asked me "are you going to try for a boy?" Kobe did not worry about what he didn't have, he clearly took great joy and pride in what he did.

As a Father to a 16 yr old son and now to an amazing little 5 yr old girl we’ve had in foster care for almost 4 yrs trying to adopt there is no better feeling than being a Dad and Kobe you could tell by his words but most importantly his actions was truly a great Father.... many accomplishments and truly a legendary figure of our time...hug your kids and those close to you and tell them you love them as often as you can because we never know if we will have the chance to again... prayers to all the families involved with this terrible tragedy

From Twitter.....

Bought flowers to bring to staples center. When the florist saw that I wanted purple and yellow she asked, “for Kobe?” I nodded. When she finished I asked what I owed her. she shook her head, handed me the flowers and said “it’s LA”. I almost cried. LAs love for Kobe is powerful

I think learning of Kobe’s death will be one of those moments that you remember exactly where you were when you heard the news. I know it definitely will be for me. He’s one of the most iconic athletes ever. It doesn’t matter if you’re a fan of sports or not, the news of his death shook you. RIP to all those involved in that crash. I hope nothing but peace for all of the families affected by this tragedy.

I just saw this on Facebook and it really shows how much Kobe means to LA. Once people find out which Florist Shop that guy went to that woman will get paid back in some really good karma that I’m sure she doesn’t expect.

Man, this is why we should try to live every day like it's our last. Be thankful more rather than complaining about the small stuff. As a huge fan of Kobe, he was like my medicine that replaced Jordan when that time came for him to get ready to hang it up.

I'm not ashamed to say I have been screwed up all day and just can't stop or control my feelings and the hurt right now. I had no idea this happened until my brother called me. I keep thinking this is just a bad dream.

I'm sure all of you have heard bits and pieces of what happened. Looks like due to bad weather, a lot of fog, they ended up flying into the mountain area way to low. Just a devastating situation for all families involved. There is a recording from the pilot and ATC during the flight. I have linked it for those who care to listen. I did and it just made it worse because I can only imagine. You guys have a good night and I hope a better upcoming week. I'm going to take a break from posting for a little while.

That is heart wrenching to listen to. The last communication from the pilot was less than a minute before the crash. To know that one minute everything is fine and the next 9 lives ended. I pray that no one suffered. I can’t imagine the grief his wife is going through. Losing a husband and a child. I’ll be praying for the Bryant family.

I was never a big Lakers' fan, but I revered Kobe fiercely. He was everything I love in a player. His will & physical toughness was without peer. He played hurt (I mean genuinely hurt) more than anyone I can remember. Nothing stopped him.
