My point above, which I don't think all of you got is that Smith is an early enrollee and it's dead period until classes start at most universities. So, no coach can recruit him until school starts.
And Santa Claus lives at the North Pole... The only thing the dead period does is prohibit face to face contact. Coaches can (legally) still call, text, SnapChat, FaceTime and even write recruits. Plus, the "dead period" visit is one of the most disregarded, and least punished NCAA guidelines. I doubt Kobe even realizes it's a "dead period"...

I admit I don't really know what coaches can or cannot do during a dead period but I think they can't have personal contact but can contact by social media, phone, etc. Don't forget there's been contact someway or other between Gran/Hinshaw and '16 recruits.

As for Smith, looks as if the decommit was a long time coming.

He signed financial aid papers not a LOI. Financial aid papers are not binding on the recruit.

Weird.

I wonder why all our recruits don't just do that?

Why do we even have coaches, if all they do is hold them back? You need to get to mitch ASAP with your theory.

LOL
YES JAUK Seems there is some on this board leaning towards Louisville maybe the domino's will start to fall LOL

whoever this dude is, he's not bigger than the team. We just spent a year worrying about pissin off one or two guys. If he doesnt want to be here, quit trying to figure out why and move on to the next guy.

Kid claims he'll choose between UK and USC and enroll early. Not sure UK is still recruiting.

So there's still a chance but we don't know if UK is still recruiting a stud DT? Do we have a replacement or are we just turning our back because "he gone"?

Report on another site was behind a barrier but title suggested we don't want Kobe as an early enrollee. Why would that be?

Read somewhere he had shoulder surgery and wouldn't be competing in the Semper Fi game. If that's the case, it doesn't really make sense for the staff to want him to enroll early to rehab since he won't be able to compete in spring practice.

That's why UK is always recruiting more players at the same positions because players like him string you along then decommit, we want players who want to be here, if you don't then move on.

Yes, the UK staff doesn't want him to enroll early (Won't take him?) due to the injury - per another site.

Can you only enroll so many for the spring semester? Otherwise, who cares if he can't compete in the spring. Get him on campus and in the right frame of mind, concentrate on his studies, film room, nutrition program, etc.

I agree. Not sure where UK stands with Smith, but even if he is injured and unable to compete in spring practice, I don't see much downside in bringing him in early - especially if refusing to do so might drive him away to another conference program.

I don't understand the not enrolling early argument. Certainly not at the position smith plays..why would UK not take him ....unless we have some lined up who are better?

Sounds as if UK doesn't want to be responsible for his rehab, which is understandable depending on the severity of his injury. If his surgery was major have him rehab at home and come in Dec '16. If it's minor bring him in now. Don't forget his NCAA clock starts ticking the minute he enrolls.

Very odd situation. I'd think that you would want every highly recruited commit to enroll early just so you don't have to worry about them decomiting in January/Feb when recruiting gets hectic.

Unless they are damaged goods and you are unsure if they will without certainty recover completely and be the same player they were. not like we haven't been burned by that situation before in our past, hello Ryan Mossakowski. if he has a bad shoulder and I were the UK coaches I'd switch his offer to grayshirt Dec '16 enrollment. and if he thinks he can do better, best wishes.

Don't forget too that if the injury is severe enough he'd be unable to do upper body weight training for an unknown period of time which would be a huge setback for anybody, especially a DT. That's why I'd try to hold him off until Dec '16 and see where he is.

Can't imagine we wouldn't want him due to the injury.either we want him as a player or we dont. I don't think rehabbing the kid is a fly on the wall of our expenditures for a season and if he can help you bring him in and rehab him.

Guys quit convincing yourself of something that isn't real. We keep on all kinds of kids that get hurt. Darius West and his leg concerns, Alvonte Bell had injuries before UK, there are other instances. It's clear Kobie Smith is looking to upgrade from UK and it appears there are other teams (USC) that he feels are better for him is why this is happening.

The whole injury situation...UK has access to great othopedic staff and rehab for kids with injuries. We rehab kids all the time. UK needs a big kid like Kobie Smith not for this spring or even just this year...we need him for the next 3-4 years...so why wouldn't we wait on a kid like him? Unless we come up with a better DT recruit in next month (which isn't likely) there isn't a need to move on from him

That's essentially what I'm saying. If need be, wait. Of course, we don't know the whole story.

One reason I'd like to have him is he's from a strong HS program in Ga.

If it's a serious shoulder injury, there's no way to know if it will heal properly. There are variables that we, the posters, don't know about the situation. It's possible UK told him to hold off and it's possible that he decommitted.

If you thought Smith was the one DT that could come in early and give you depth and then an injury keeps that from happening, maybe you would prefer to use the scholly on Pringle who can get here and practice this spring and provide depth for the fall.
