Yeah just read it and was about to post. Spot on. We don’t want to stop the other sports but at least know the facts folks.

My favorite line from the article is the opening line:

"It has been a while since the New York Times rediscovered Big Ten football is played in the exotic land of New Jersey. But the Gray Lady’s subcontractors are back on the case."

That's a great critique of the New York Times with some Jersey attitude coming along for the ride. Bullseye!

Said it in the other thread.. spending almost like a Big Ten team should but not getting Big Ten full revenues... that's why these financial stats look like they do. All the comparison points they used have been getting full shares for decades.

THIS moment is the time BEFORE the full benefits of Big Ten membership hits.. that's when you can write such a damning piece. Next year and subsequent years the picture will become less and less bad... so NOW is the time to yank out Killinsgworth and the old RU1000 (really RU10) folks.

New Jersey can afford one school that offers collegiate athletic opportunities at the highest level. It is crazy to think New Jersey should not provide this to its residents... especially since it is the athletic supporters and advertisers and sponsors that carry most of the burden.

So, in short, as elegantly as they are due.. F that *stuff* and F the horse they rode in on too.

Not to be a wet blanket, but we are the only school I am aware of that needed government money and bond financing to expand/refurbish our stadiums for both football and basketball. Every other school that I am aware did it with donor money.

Are we still getting the same amount of money from NJ as a State school or has the increase in our BIG share from TV money allowed NJ to fork Rutgers once again? You know, allocate more money to other state schools that don't have the cash cow of being in The BIG.

I think it's a fair article. My only beef is when he calls our fanbase sensitive. Gee, I wonder why we would be that way?
I think the fan base or maybe those online are overly sensitive. They seem to think that they are picked on. The football program has not been successful on the field, that is going to be criticized. It’s not the fault of the people writing, it’s the reality of what is happening. If the football results change, the criticism will subside.

That's really not true. Here is just one example - Florida State. They received $20 million dollars to "repair" their stadium. In addition, their stadium expansion included the addition of classrooms to the stadium structure, so I believe those funds did not count as athletics expenses. Very clever bookkeeping.

In 2015, taxpayers helped to fund the renovation of Washington's stadium, our newest Big Ten member.

Kansas also received $50 million in a taxpayer state grant to renovate their stadium:

I'm sure there are many more examples.

And let's not forget about professional sports either - $850 million dollars for the Bills new stadium - all taxpayer money.

Of course, taxpayers pay even when donors fund these projects because they are a tax write-off.

In 2015, colleges spent $17 BILLION dollars in the prior decade for stadium expansion/renovation projects. You can bet that there were taxpayer funded portions in that amount.

NJ.com piece linked in response to Krarch. It details many of the benefits the academic side has enjoyed since joining the Big Ten. Why anyone with any connection to the school would oppose membership is beyond me.

Kratch used to be an RU beat reporter for the Star Ledger…the Ledger/NJ.com being one of the OG perpetrators of misleading click bait hit articles on RU athletics.

Actually, no, he was pretty even handed except, of course, for the headline over which he had no control.

More critique of Howie Mandel.

I couldn't believe how that article waited about a dozen paragraphs and Killingsworth shrieks before you got to them barely complementing bball and not mentioning lacrosse, soccer (mens and womens) , field hockey, baseball, etc and not a ONE mention of the increase in applications, SAT scores and USNWR rankings,

Right now RU and Maryland are tied as the #1 public schools in the Northeast in USNWR. Just a coincidence?

Culturally the school is anti-athletic. Our accounting methods differ from most schools athletic departments. Anecdotally a good example from Bob Mulcahey's book is that the womans volleyball team is charged a fee to use the Livingston gym - same with the swim team to use Werblin center.

Things like insurance on the stadium is on the ADept. - other schools do not do this.
