I know that sometime back this was a thread, but, was Jay Bilas ever mentioned as a replacement? I know that he talks to Duke teams a lot. Just wondered. Don't remember if he has ever coached at any level, I doubt it . I sometimes wonder if Duke might not eventually do a lot worse than him as coach. Again , I am a big time, and long time , Duke fan, and am not trying to start anything negative. I remember him as a player , and have often thought he might at some point make a great coach. It is also a slow time of the year for basketball.

I certainly hope and pray that Bilas is not considered as K's replacement.

Bilas? Whom has he ever coached? There are at least ten better candidates within the Duke family, if that's even important.

Bilas has coached before, be was a grad assistant during the 91 and 92 championships. But I can't imagine he would be considered as a candidate, or that he would inquire.

Just wondered , that's all. Really liked him as a player and respect him in his present job, just didn't know if he had ever been considered as a coach.. Like I said, just asking. I remember several names at the time that I hope are not picked also. Frankly, guess I just hope that K coaches forever. It is going to be damned hard to replace him.

I think it might be Capel or maybe Hurley. It could be Wojo or Collins. Then's there Bray,Johnny Dawkins or maybe they could go outside the family with Brad Stevens or Shaka Smart. Quinn Snyder is around you know and lets not forget Shane Battier or Jon Scheyer. I don't know about Jay Bilas because he's at he top of his profession. What about Quinn Cook. Grant Hill maybe. Maybe we should start another poll. Have I missed someone. I just don't know. OFC

He joked about being 2 for 2 on national titles as a coach on the Scheyer podcast. I think he knows that he would be a mediocre coach. Besides, why would he want to go down that road? His life is great as is.

I think you gotta put Roy in the conversation. He's proven what you can do by getting the most out of one and done talent. By most I mean number of years in college of course.

Well if hof coach roy williams can be put into the conversation then hof coach larry brown can be put into the conversation because he can take over right now but the problem is we would be on probation within a year so maybe hof roy williams may be a better option than hof coach larry brown because hof coach roy williams is made of teflon and no matter what he does nothing will stick. Bilas stepped away from the coaching track a long time ago. It was a mutual decision between he and his wife. They thought the coaching career path was a grinder on any family.

Jay has pretty good gigs right now. He covers the sport he loves and enjoys practicing law. I don't ever see him coaching again to be honest. He's already north of 50 years of age.

Gillespie is coming back with you guys and Brown is rumored to be Roy's replacement.

I remember when UK got Billy G. Some UK fans I know were so excited. They were saying Billy G. was the first choice and UK got who they wanted. It seems to me at that time a couple of other coaches had turned down the KU job including Billy Donovan. They would have been better off keeping Tubby. OFC

Calipari would give his left testicle to be K's replacement, but that won't ever happen. We have a reputation to keep.

OFC
Nope, I would have to become a fan of another team if that happened. Maybe a team in town where I live.

We've been discussing this for years and there is one guy that's been with Coach K for years and none of us have ever brought his name up. He probably knows the system a well as anyone. The problem is I don't know what is name is. How about " The Crazy Towel Guy . "

Jay will not be our next coach and he surely will not be unc's. But what he's is a Dukie in it's purist form despite of how some feel about him. He's a professional and the best in his field. We should be proud of that. Do we really want him as a "homer" as Len Elmore is or Hubert Davis was. He does his job as well as it can be done. But remember who he is and where he came from and who influenced him to be the best at what he does. That's Coach K and never, ever have I heard Coach K complain about the way Jay does and goes about his job. OFC

Sky great point about not "wanting a homer." Agreed my good friend! No way do I want this type viewpoint from a highly respected ex Blue Devil. We are in complete harmony, Jay will never be charged w/favoritism.

However there was once a wise old journalist and pretty smart ex Duke sportswriter and author named Bill Brill. The late and great Mr. Brill was quoted as saying he felt Jay went too FAR in distancing himself from Duke in his commentary as to OVERCOMPENSATE. Its always been this characterization I have concurred per Bilas.

Also in one of the great chances to present hard hitting journalism per the UNC scandal Jay failed. He didnt truly ask Roy Williams the TOUGH QUESTIONS in the wake of allegations of sham classes by Rashad McCants and Mary Willingham. He said later, "I believe Roy Williams." I think he was doing the company two step for ESPN president and UNC grad John Skipper.

Several over at THR proclaim pretty much every year that this is it for K and they could see him stepping down after one more season. Nothing but wishful thinking. I bet Huckleberry Roy gets out before K does.

Love how you hear them talk about how K is only staying for "selfish" reasons like wanting to get to 1,100 wins because all he cares about is his ego. It just kills those clowns that he won't get out and stop being that HUGE thorn in their collective asses. And I LOVE it.

Well to be fair it's time for someone else to have a chance to coach Duke. I assume it's the same logic they used for the USA team. Either that or they just dont like people who have goals that they want to achieve. Guess that is selfish! They right!

Here's my list of choices:

1 - Brad Stevens (also big bump in pay for Capel to remain as assistant)
2 - Capel
3 - No need for other names as I believe Duke will have Capel in one of the above capacities

Love Tommy!! Took Ol Roy to the wire last year as decided underdog in NCAAs....Still remember his shot left of the circle that bounced around and dropped in at Littlejohn in '87 in a close win...

As a KU fan, I think this nails it. Jay seems to be very highly regarded in the college basketball community and the fact that he is a Duke grad virtually always reflects very well on Duke. There are some in the field that are just awful, but the constant presence of Jay Bilas offering his insight without said homerism is both refreshing and valued. If I were a Duke fan, I would be very happy with Jay Bilas right where he is. I'm a KU fan and I'm happy with Jay right where he is.

Very happy with where Jay is right now, and think he is too. I would NOT be happy with him on our bench, and by same token he's not interested in such a position.
