Matt opened with the fact that Pope seemed bewildered and he's always seen Pope as someone who likes the challenge of fixing things.
My take on this is that he can't fix Jalen Lowe
He can't fix JQ and there's probably a couple kids on the team that he would like to send packing because he can't coach them.
All in all he probably knows he's screwed this season.
FWIW, Scoop says Lowe done for year..

Lowe can’t take the physicality of the SEC, he realizes that and is going to play professionally overseas based on last year’s accomplishment, JQ, put a fork in him, IMO, BG and Oweh are mentally and physically already sitting out, so we’re down four players.

In a way I think regardless of who gets cut the team would benefit from a condensed rotation. It wouldn't be ideal to lose your preseason All-American and only returning big man, plus the two highest rated transfers. But, if that's what it takes, lol.

If there is truly an internal problem with this team, then Pope needs to do something drastic to prove that he is in charge. Maybe sending someone home would get through to the rest of them. I really don't care who it is at this point.

The players that SHOULD get the most minutes for the foreseeable future, in no order.

Aberdeen
Mo D
Moreno
Johnson
Williams
Chandler
Jelly

This is 7 guys that need to play the majority of the game. Create an offense and defense scheme that works to the strengths of these 7 players.

1 2 1 defense + Man to Man + Zone
Motion Offense & Back Door Cuts (w/ Pick & Roll)

JQ (When he's ready)
Lowe (if he ever comes back, but doubtful)

Oweh & Garrison get scrap minutes until Oweh changes his me first attitude and Garrison puts in consistent effort.

Noah should only get scrap minutes. He can't play big games. It sucks, but it is what it is.

May have to un-red shirt Hawthorne if things get worse.

Pope may have to go from 'positive' Pope to 'mean' Pope. Lay down the law to all of the guys and see who buys in. If they don't want to buy in, then let them ride the seats. I was impressed with how Mo D changed in the second half and was driving to the rim with authority. Pretty obvious Pope told them to stop jacking up 3s. He appears to have heard the halftime message.

It’s not easy to go mean and hard when they’re already used to nice and soft. Much easier to start out an a-hole and go backwards.

Mo D is horrible............why did Pope want him......don't understand
he doesn't fit the offense at all & sure hasn't done anything on defense or rebounding

Mo leads the team in points per 40 and is second in total rebounds per 40.

He is also third on the team in steals per 40 and second in blocks per 40.

Mo D, Aberdeen, Moreno, and Chandler have been our best players so far.

What you do is kick Garrison off the team the same way Cal did a few players like Quade etc in season transfer out. The players will know he got kicked off the team and then hopefully that wakes Oweh and Jasper Johnson up to if they get kicked off the team, NBA teams will shy away from them thinking they are problems.

If Pope doesnt have it in him to make someone leave the team, then good bye Pope, weaklings never prosper.

Roll with what you got left. Put all your focus on these players and let the message be clear. If you can’t play for Kentucky then get f out of here.

Always hated ksr and Matt Jones they can go too.

I didn’t read through this whole thread so maybe it’s already been mentioned. But Matt also predicted Mitch will step down this offseason. Apparently his contract says after July 1, 2026 he can become an advisor (assistant?) to the president for $800k/yr (good work if you can get it). I was half listening but I believe Matt said he would need to give 6 month notice, so we would likely hear something in January if that prediction proves to be the case.

Thanks for providing this context, the Mo D hate doesn’t make much sense to me. I think he’s been used weirdly, but looked better in the second half when he stopped shooting 3s and started attacking the basket from the perimeter, one or two dribbles and go up with it. I think he’s a better rim protector than Garrison. Curious who is first in blocks/40, Moreno?

Edit: I checked the block stats. Believe it or not, Chandler leads the team in blocks and blocks per 40 at 1.7, Dioubate right behind him at 1.6. Moreno and Garrison are tied for 6th with .8 blocks per 40. Not great from your two centers. AD and Nerlens had .8 blocks before the game started.

Lamont was a thick pg, 200 lbs according to his UK bio. Injuries happen, especially this finicky soft tissue stuff. Evolution didn’t design us to walk upright, let alone hoop!
