1a. Dake
1b. Burroughs
2. ?

I know a lot of people have said Nolf and I think he will be great coach but not sure how realistic it is given his age.

Ben Askren isn’t realistic either but how about Max Askren?

Tony Robie?

Honestly, no idea.

Does Dake want to coach? Does he want to coach in Iowa? Do we want him?
JB? Not feeling it at all.
Nolf? Experience?
Lee? Experience, still competing
Kem? Him and Lee are only ex-Hawks I'd consider... but he's inexperienced.
Askren? Almost died

For the record, I think Dake would be a good choice because he’s so competitive. But I find it hilarious that people are blaming the coaches for the “style” that’s being wrestled and the first person they want to replace our staff with is the lowest scoring, most defensive wrestler in recent memory.

Which staff? Name one?
PSU? No
Ohio? No
Nebraska? No

VT? Can he re-recruit the Bassett family to IC?

Here are your top 12. You can eliminate 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6. It seems like an established coach and staff might not be a bad direction to go.

1Penn State (15)(11-0)3991
2Ohio State (1)(14-0)3852
3Iowa State(8-1)3683
4Iowa(9-3)3514
5Oklahoma State(10-1)3375
6Nebraska(9-5)3176
7Virginia Tech(7-2)3047
8NC State(12-3)2868
9Minnesota(8-4)2749

Maybe that's what we need, the exact opposite of what we have in the Brands.

Then instead of Tom pissing and moaning in press conferences about not scoring, Dake can piss and moan about his guys scoring tons of points and winning, but giving up too many on the defensive side for his liking. Win-win. 🙂

With where the program currently sits and the large jump it will take to get in the same stratosphere as Penn State, I would watch for a younger up and coming coach with a great nucleus of young talent on his team to try and sign and then benefit from the potential transfer of young talent who would follow their coach.

It is clear Iowa needs a major jolt to take that big of a step forward and no better way than to consolidate championship caliber talent for instant results that will hopefully then lead to sustained and improved recruiting. Kind of like Coach Cignetti at Indiana who turned the program around and made champions in such a short period, by bringing top recruits from previous school and then leveraging NIL to sign some key national transfers in critical spots of the lineup where there are holes.

At this point, I think we need to swing for the fence and getting talented championship contending wrestlers in the lineup who can make a multi-year run would help catapult Iowa back towards the front of the pack more so than a change of coach only and hope that he can somehow crack the code to outcompete Penn State the traditional way by building up from the ground up.

Taylor was about the only program changing candidate available and that ship obviously sailed to Stillwater where the results are already showing. Burroughs would be great, but he and his wife want to be out East and can’t see him buying into leading Iowa well into the future.

And outside of the box option. Helen as an assistant. She’s a very technically precise competitor and a very good teacher.

Assuming Tom remains for the next couple years, I'd start greasing the wheels for Metcalf to come back and bring along any young ISU studs with him. Add Nolf as assistant coach and that could be a great combo of varying levels of personality/intensity and styles that is more in line with current wrestling.

I dont believe Nolf would be an assistant. But if you hired either Metcalf or Nolf.....you should get Carr as an assistant. I think he will be a great coach. Here is a staff out of left field.

Metcalf

Carr
Big Tony

I love all the enthusiasm that everyone is bringing to these threads with their wishlists for what is their ideal coaching staffs. The fact of the matter is that whomever is named HC when Tom leaves or is relieved, they will pick their own staff to execute their vision for the program.

Iowa does not need to know whom we want if a change is made. It will be the top HC opening since Carl to Psu.

Since we did not have the foresight to get Taylor like we did with Gable, the next coach will need to be able to demonstrate superiority in recruiting, training, nutrition, and most importantly the ability to adapt in all areas. Someone that can woo big donors and patch up issues with alumni so we can celebrate the programs’ history would be nice.

Since Beth appears to actually be competent at her job (unlike Barta), we won’t need to worry about a stupid long contract and buyout if things don’t work out.

If you go with youth, how about:

Nolf
Lee (either one)
Carr
Brooks
Nolf and Lee I already mentioned. Carr will be competitive at least until 2028 just like Lee.

Brooks, I would burn my season tickets at the feet of the Gable statue if he (or Bo) was associated with Iowa Wrestling! (Symbolically of course since they're e-tickets)

I agree, this year has all the signs of a time a motivated AD would make a move, but the biggest challenge is there are no obvious slam dunk candidates available. I would think stability and knowing the present floor is to finish in top 3 most years would push to have the status quo remain until a much better option is available.

JB is the last one out there that can have a DT like effect. He has every bit the star power of DT and more and already has coaching experience like DT did. Not sure why the situations are any different besides a billionaire donor, but we weren’t going to have that anyway.

this. Tom is here to stay. Dont expect changes either. WE LIKE OUR GUYS
Much like Ferentz, Tom will leave when HE is ready. Only our basketball coaches seem to have some vulnerability, and we give them a long rope also, except Licklighter.

Recruiting number one, wooing big donors number 2.

DT's experience was running the M2 academy, not coaching at the college level. That's what Nolf is currently doing - running an academy. I almost think that's better experience for head coaching at a big name D1 school because you learn the recruiting, salesmanship, and business side of a high profile program as well as the actual coaching. I do think Nolf is ideally 2-3 years away from taking over a program like DT did, but if you want someone like him, you have to strike when the opportunity presents itself. With the high value recruiting classes that you have coming, you should want a new, younger coach to have a chance to have them all four years. Tom & Terry will just grind them into the ground.

Regardless, I do think JB would be a good choice, too. He certainly has the name recognition and gravitas in the wrestling world and some coaching experience (even if not running the program) in the Big 10.

Does he even like working with people? JB amazing wrestler, JB the teacher, not so sure... The same could be said for Spencer.
