Got to hand it to Loyola., They easily could have beaten SF 90-0 and they managed the clock really well and for the most part kept the ball on the ground.

The highlight of the day for SF was stopping LA on a 4th down attempt.

The game really showed good sportsmanship.

Ghost, was this your first time at LA for a game? Other than the constant din of the vehicles on the Edens, and other than the end result, how was it?

ramblinman,

No it wasn't my first. I actually have ties to both schools.

I live nearby and I get to one home LA game a year and have since 1990 and usually go to one away LA game a year too. I drove to the MC game last week. As I walked into the stadium I was met by a bunch of people at LA I've known for a long time. The ticket booth was filled with familiar faces.

Knew people playing for SF in both games so I was cheering for them.

Traffic was slow on the Edens so the noise didn't bother me. I've seen LA change a lot over the past 25 years but it's still a great place to watch a game.

The frequent mention of the Edens and Loyola prompted me to do a Google Earth view of the school. The school and football field really couldn't be any closer! Wow.

I also did not know that New Trier HS was virtually next door to Loyola. Interesting.
Do the schools ever play each other in football? Seems like a natural for this to be game 1 each year and get the traveling trophy happening.

About a half mile directly north of Loyola is the former New Trier HS West campus that was open as a four year high school for around 15 years back in the late 60s to early 80s. It is currently used as a freshmen only campus, and the Trevians play their home football, lacrosse, and soccer games in the stadium there. The main NT campus is in Winnetka.

Loyola vs. New Trier is a pretty intense rivalry in most sports -- hockey and lacrosse in particular. Around 35 years ago, LA and NT had a season opening non-con football series that lasted for a few years. Legend has it that the games were so heated and hard hitting that the series was discontinued (not sure by which school or if both) because of injuries, etc.

When LA has played at NT in playoff football in past years, the Rambler student fans gather at Loyola and march to the game en masse.

In the past NT did not want to play LA in football, as they did not want to get a result similar to what they experienced against HF last year and hurt their playoff cahances. I hear the new coach at NT is much more receptive to the game, which is great, as they should play every year. Having family that played in the rivalry in one of the previously mentioned sports, I will tell you it is very intense, as the kids all grew up together and know each other, but yet the cultures of the schools are very different. It is one of those games where it is beyond a rivalry because it is very even and both schools perform at a very high level. It is really one of the best rivalries in Illinois, although not for the thin skinned.
